  • The Tennis Viking played 1 spot at a D3 college and as you can see is absolutely relentless. I have a tough time swinging through the shots and placing the ball because he hits a very heavy topspin shot off both wings. I am working on attacking the return of serve which is why I was missing so many returns. Had a chance to go up 5-2 in the second set when serving at 4-2 40-15, but double faulted three times in a row. I only double faulted one other time in the match, also at an ad-out point. I now realize I need to steady my breathing and my motion when I get nervous.
    Some of the advice i got on previous videos was make sure to come off the ground on the serve and that extra height has definitely been helping so thanks for that tip. Im still tossing the ball a little too far right. Also got a tip to attack more on the returns and it will take a few matches possibly but I will get it down. And then the advice I will give myself for next match is to swing much more freely, try not to hold back whatsoever. My best shots are when I fully extend but the trick to doing that is aiming 3/4 depth into the court in my opinion. And then backhand I need to attack every single one that falls into my strike zone, could take an extra step or two on that side to get set up better I think.

    I like the Viking's game. He doesn't give up ground on his groundstrokes and sets up nicely on both wings for his shots. Good match.

    Impressive court coverage from Viking. Not only was he getting to shots that would have been winners against less mobile opponents, but he was often putting pace and placement on them too. Couple of those types in the 4.0 league I play in, and it's so frustrating to have to keep playing when you thought you had the point won... or worse, suddenly find yourself on the defensive!
    Overall, great playing from both of you, thanks for sharing!

    Nice playing -- I'm wondering where you got the advice to attack returns. Attacking second serves is definitely the right move, but trying to attack first serves doesn't make sense especially where you aren't consistently making returns. Your technique looks good except you have to loosen up your hands/wrists on both sides as your current tendency is to tighten up and arm the ball under pressure. And the toss is way, way too far right. You have a good motion and get a ton of first serves in, but with that toss it's basically impossible to hit a kicker which would be a huge weapon for you. Anyway, take that as constructive criticism -- really enjoyed watching your match!

    • @usopenjohn3725
      @usopenjohn3725  3 года назад +2

      Thanks for the tips, I carefully study every tip and try to make changes where I can, so I am grateful for your advice. Toss has been a consistent issue - i think knee bend and elbow bend on the serve need to be coordinated so they happen at the same time and that will give me the racquet head speed to hit something other than sliders on the second serves with that wide toss. Tennis is a never ending learning experience I guess. Ill go over your comment before my next few practices and see what I can do.

    maybe I'm wrong, but it looks like you're swinging a really heavy racquet.. you look fit, your racquet head speed shouldn't be that slow (on your forehand at least; your backhand actually looks like it has more pace). almost seems like you're bunting the forehand. if you haven't, you should try experimenting with a lighter racquet, around 11.5oz

    • @usopenjohn3725
      @usopenjohn3725  3 года назад

      Thanks ChiJin9...youre absolutely right and it’s something ive been trying to fix... this opponent hits extremely heavy and the racquet gets pushed back in my hand as i try to swing it...i have tried both heavier and lighter on the racquet and just havent found a solution yet, no doubt a light racket would allow me to swing faster but returning fast or heavy balls is more difficult without the weight of the racket to push them back, i havent found a solution yet but am still looking

    • @Avenjin
      @Avenjin 3 года назад

      @@usopenjohn3725 one thing is that not all lighter racquets are made the same. for instance the wilson blade plays completely different than the pure strike even though they have almost identical specs - the difference is mostly due to the weight distribution and composition. judging by your videos a tweener like that would absolutely suit you best, however I don't think you'd like the blade due to how it swings, nor any babolat due to the stiffness. I would highly recommend demoing the ezone 98, head speed mp, and head extreme mp, as I think those are best suited to your game. you look like you're in good shape so any one of those racquets should help you learn how to generate your own pace without getting too pushed around

    • @theroadrunnerjarhead4109
      @theroadrunnerjarhead4109 3 года назад +1

      @@usopenjohn3725 try hitting the ball earlier on your forehand so you can drive your weight through the contact zone. You can also get more of a unit turn. You should be looking over your left shoulder before you swing your racket. It doesn’t look like you’re transferring your weight. On some of your forehands it looks like you’re slapping the ball because you’re late. On your two handed backhand you’re getting good weight transfer. I’m just a 3.0 so I hope you don’t mind me putting my two cents in.

      the higher number the better, 2.5 is beginner 7.0 is considered pro. The NTRP ratings are used by the USTA and a bit flawed which is why UTR has come out recently and uses a scale all the way to 16. It is considered to be more accurate.

      @@-Above-Average- That's not even close to being realistic. It's pretty clear this is NTRP. This play is extremely fair for 4.5 in most if not all of the US. There are a few levels above 4.5 like 5.0 and 5.5 (along with 6.0 - 7.0 that are rarely used). If 4.5 is 120 mph serves and killer groundstrokes, what else is there?
