- Thanks for joining me while I learn to weave a tube on my rigid heddle loom. I've never tried this type of weaving before, but it's not difficult! It would be a great way to weave a bag or a pillow, and you can even do it with handspun yarn! I used the handspun silk and flax/linen yarn from the Paradise Fibers September bag

That weaving sequence made my head spin. I once wove a purse all in one piece. First I wove a thick piece,then a tube. I saved out one inch of warps on each side of the tube (these were woven into the strap) and finally wove two flat pieces. When I cut it off the loom I turned it inside out. The first thick piece ended up inside the bag dividing it into two sections. One flat piece became the closing flap,and the other folded to the inside where I made it into two small pockets.i think that was the peak of my bag designing. I don’t know if I explained that well, but watching this video reminded me of that project. Thanks!

I've always been interested in the fabric that is woven, but I don't have the patience to sit and weave myself! The most weaving I do is bead weaving on a loom! I can do that, and have taught my granddaughter how to weave on a bead loom. I guess that is why each person is into different crafts! 🤭.
I love to watch you spin, and love that most of the time you spin on lives! I am glad that they turned out like you wanted them to! They are going to make amazing little bags for whatever you choose to use them for!!!! I love the colors that show up in the weavings, not at all what I thought they would look like when you first started!

Have you ever seen Clothing from the Hands that Weave? It’s an old book on how to weave tubes and other configurations of double-width weaving in seamless garment construction. I don’t know if that’s your cup of tea, but I enjoyed it even from the standpoint of understanding traditional garment weaving techniques from around the world. Super cool topic, and it’s fun to see someone touch on it on Fiber RUclips!

You also spin linen wet because wetting activates the remaining pectin in the fiber, allowing you to spin thinner threads. Pectin basically does what the little barbs on animal protein fibers do. It's actually a practice that's fading out industrially, because linen can be "cottonized" to blend with other fibers and be spun on non-linen specific equipment. Cottonizing also makes preparing the fiber before spinning easier.

Lol. I feel your talking a foreign language. I don’t weave ( not yet) I know I well go down this rabbit hole. Someday. Equipment is so expensive. I fell in love with the wolf floor loom. Your weaving is beautiful. That was awesome weaving in the round.
Watch for a used one! I have seen them at 75% lower than retail barely used.
Double weaving squares me so weaving a tube definitely does! But you gave me the courage to try them now
The first time I tried double width weaving, I used yarn I didn't mind ruining because I was scared

You did a great job explaining this technique. To ensure that my pick-up sticks don't come out when I move the warp forward, once I get them in the warp correctly, I tie a shoe-lace or yarn across the top and loop each end of the stick.
Interesting! Have you had trouble with them sliding out?
@@FiberLoveDiary yes when I release the warp in the back before I have a chance to wind the front cloth beam forward there is that moment sometimes when murphy's law takes over

love watching weaving, I don’t think I would have the patience for the set up, I even hate casting in over 200 stitches for a large knitting project 😂😂. I’ll just enjoy it from a distance watching you ;).
I used to feel that way about weaving but warping has gotten a lot easier for me with practice

I would love to see how you finished these! Even if it's only pictures or you do a "show and tell" after you're done! I just did some tube weaving on my floor loom to make baby blankets! It was my first attempt and a rather educational experience!

I love double weave and I've done a few projects, but never a tube! Making pillows or bags that way is a great idea, I am going to try it for sure! And yes, I would love to see the finished results when you have them done 👍

Yarnworker has a weave along where the project was a twill pillow cover and I think it was woven in a tube.
I'm sure more experienced weavers have been doing it forever. I just kept thinking how easy that would be to finish up!

This bends my brain! How...!? But IT WORKS! Crazy. I’m going to be thinking about this for awhile! Quick question - do the two heddles have to be identical? It seems to me they do, and I only have one heddle so I can’t do it anyway, but there might be someone out there with two slightly different heddles who is wondering...

Oh, Trish! THANK YOU!! I'll have to watch this over again, maybe a few times, but this is easier than I thought. Any time you want to pass on new weaving techniques on a rigid heddle (I also have an Ashford) I'm all in. Especially as it relates to garment-making. This has inspired me and given me lots of ideas for bags, pillows, sleeves, garment necklines, cowls...all for weaving this winter. Perhaps I don't have to construct garments only from flat panels after all. I'm looking forward to seeing how you finish the ones you made. Also, what does the weave look like at the edges of the tubes? How to keep an even weave around the corner is my concern. Any tips? Thank you so much for this lesson! It is much appreciated.
I thought the edges looked pretty good. I'll try to show them when I show the finishing. For first try, I would probably make something that's going to stay with a sharp edge like a bag or pillow so you can get a feel for the edges. I also think they would really even out if you opened them up to make something like a sleeve during washing, etc.
This looks so cool and over my head. 🥰🤔I’m not understanding where all the thread s go when your warping. If I can figure it out it could save tons of seaming time. I’d actually like to see how you finish these. I’m currently working on a messenger bag out of my woven material. I’ll post pics on FB soon.

That is absolutely cool! I have not tried a second heddle on my Ashford yet (need to buy another heddle, lol). I have used different warp on some of my projects that is different than the weft. It gives the projects a different feel sometimes, especially with the stiffness factor of some materials. Definitely going to mark this down as later ideas to try. Love to see your options to finish them, I'm thinking a fabric lining in one of the colors?
I'm planning to line them all, but still trying to think the process through because I'm so picky about finishing.
I wish I knew where I saw it, unfortunately I do not. i saw someone weave a tube and fill it on the loom, that way they could weave it shut too. They were using a floor loom, but it is something to think about. Blessings.
