i love getting bettas from petco! my petco surprisingly takes good care of their fish! i got my butterfly betta from there and he’s thriving in a community tank now, happy to say i’ve had him for about 4 1/2 months😊
The workers may try their best to care for the fish but they are usually shipped from terrible breeders and in bulk, most of which dying, sick or close to death. Its not reliable buying from a pet store because of that reason, but I do know that the workers always try to ensure when the fish is purchased, they are being purchased with and into a good environment. its not that they don't care, its just where the fish come from that makes it a bad choice.
I bought a dragon scale betta from petsmart and the store reallllly over fed him so he caught swim blader disease I used epson salt and he’s healing nicely I will update when he fully recoveres.
I went to several stores, including two LFS and eventually it was Petco that surprised me with their quality and selection. All the cups were clean and all the bettas looked healthy and active. After buying a betta and having it die four days later, I was really cautious about moving forward. But we're going on 2 months now and he's doing fine.
I just got my 5th and ...final..betta tonight. He is a dumbo halfmoon from Petsmart. He is magnificent. I knew they just got him in today because I was there earlier lol. Probably why he still looks so snazzy.
I buy bettas from two places. A local breeder who was recommended to me by a friend of mine who had a great experience with fish from that breeder or I go to my local pet store/ pet center since its more affordable and I have a larger selection and you can see the colors and varieties that may fit into my standards and aesthetics. The seller I buy from sends videos to me when I inquire about that I am in love with and is very very nice when he shows me the current stock and what are the colors or tail types available and the overall experience is very great and the fish I own now are groomed in such a way that they revealed their recessive color genes and patterns in a way that makes them look more beautiful than they already are and I enhanced their colors by keeping them in fresh water and enough food to keep them happy.
funnily and sadly enough, I lost not one but two betta this weekend; one being my older personal betta. I've been going back and watching all your videos from a few years ago with soundwave to see how I can improve my little 3.5 gallon tank for the next betta (my fifth betta) to come in the next week or so. Your content is the most reliable and I find no faults in any of it. Keep up the excellent work, fellow aquarist
I'm preparing to set up a 29 gallon community tank with a Betta, so I've really enjoyed your latest videos! I've never kept a Betta before and I'm excited! I am planning on keeping my betta with harlequin rasboras, black neon tetras, and maybe dwarf chain loaches thanks to your videos! I will get all of the community established before introducing the betta, so it will take me awhile but that's the fun part. Can't wait to see updates on Sonic!
I remember going to my pet smart in my area a few times and each time had different health of the bettas. First time they were sluggish and slow, next time they were decent, a few more times and it’s still like that. Went there for some supplies for my first betta that I’m getting later, all of the bettas were super healthy, swimming good, lively, bright in color, and what I noticed was, it was because each person who took care of the fish had a specific knowledge level, most recent time the girl was awesome, she knew about all the fish
Im in a few different petsmarts a week for work and i can tell which petsmart is which just looking at their bettas, some staff and individual stores do really well at caring for and maintaining those betta cups other stores and staff dont really care and treat it as the part time job it is
I buy my betta from a Petco . I really like them b/c they take really great care of them . They won’t sell a fish if it sick . And the person work in back always make sure they taken care of before getting them . I am very impressed by them and always answers my questions !! Worth the drive just for this store !!
Yay Sonic!🤗 so happy you got your next betta. I too miss Soundwave & I know he was blessed to have his forever home with the Gamers Wife. You, Kasia & Simply Betta are the ones that guided me back into the hobby & I am forever grateful; so thank you, if I never said it before.
I just got my newest Betta KEVIN at PetCo- Shockingly good condition I agree, all the fish looked great, and the water was spotless. Appreciated it. Typically I only shop @ Aquarium Coop (local to me), but I'm so happy with Kevin!
I love rescuing them from Meijer ! I feel so bad for them 😢 I’ve rescued 3 and brought them back to life! They went from not being able to swim and bloated to thriving and doing zoomies all day in their 5 gallon tanks ! I have 4 tanks in total, 1 community 39 gallon with my daughters veil tail then 3 other tanks with ones I’ve rescued from meijers negligence! They are thriving and it makes me so happy ! Love your videos ❤
about to buy my first one, glad to hear the big box store ones are ok, it's about all I can find in my area, mom and pop places don't even have them, just dog/cat stuff
I just got a betta and it looks very similar to your new guy Sonic! My Mr. Darcy is also blue and mustard but if the light hits the blue on the edges of his fins just right, they have a greeny teal shimmer. Super pretty! Good luck with Sonic ... he's got a great home!
I got a Mustard betta from Aqua Imports a couple months ago who is just as gorgeous!! I like that they house theirs in community tanks. I named my guy Baron after my school mascot because of his blue and gold colors. His fins have become so long and flowing! He's in a 36" bookshelf tank, and I love watching him cruise the length and weave himself through the plants.
I have a mustard gas Betta as well. His name is Calico Jack. I also have a solid red veiltail, and his name is Captain Red Beard. I love them soooo much! Also have to female Betta sororities in a 10 gal and 20 gal. I have a huge soft spot for Betta fish! They are my all time favs!
I just got a half moon paradise betta a few weeks ago....I named him Becks after a character from one of my favorite RPGs. Gorgeous fish. Great personality and very active.
I’m so lucky Tucky Hama is 30 minutes from me, just picked up a betta from Thailand today and all I had to pay was a 3 dollar import fee. They had such an amazing selection I ended up leaving with another betta!
Thankfully the koi varieties I got were from breeders and the genes have been stable. They kept their colors and simply got more vibrant as the colors marbled over time. I have a candy koi and a higabana. The candy is blue, red, and white. My higabana is yellow, blue, and white. You picked a very beautiful mustard gas though! He's gorgeous 😍
Sonic is very pretty! I just recently lost my 1 yr old betta, Dwight. He'd been suffering from some fin rot and despite all the treatments I gave him (following your advice along with others) he still didn't make it. Was never able to figure out exactly why it happened because my tank wasn't overstocked, I always keep up on maintenance, and the water parameters are good. My assumption is that my pH was just too high and caused him stress after a while. Now I'm looking for a replacement but I just can't go with a betta. Too much heartache for me right now :(
I’m surprised you didn’t talk about local breeders, maybe cuz you don’t have one? But local breeders are also a great choice. There’s a breeder only an hour from me and he has beautiful, healthy bettas. I bought two galaxy koi plakats from him three months ago and they’re super healthy and happy. They’re also usually reasonably priced and will let you pick the betta up from their breeding site if you don’t want to risk shipping. I’ve just had so much bad luck with pet store bettas that I feel breeders are usually a better choice.
I like your choice of Betta this time. He looks gorgeous. I am not in the market for one right now, but I will do what you did, instead of settling for what is available at the moment.
How cool you're in Colorado!! I don't know where I got the impression you were out west. I got my betta (Pepperoni) from Petco in Brighton CO. You're right they have a great variety and seem to care for them better than most chain stores. All the best and another great video
Most of the time if you get a betta at a chain pet store it will not stay the same color. They are usually stressed af, in the tiny cups, and they lose color. Or they are still very young and haven't fully developed their final color yet. Color changes once they get to mature in a healthy environment are totally normal.
The big box chain store near me is Pet Supplies Plus and while I used to swear off chain stores because of bad fish (an experience I think most of us have had) I moved and there are no local fish keepers in the area. But I've always had good quality fish from them, and I'm surprised that I've had no issues, wondering if they had better quality control. Plus, the betta I bought is a female and she's grown to be HUGE so I think she's a good fish 😊😊😊
I love sonic! What a beautiful betta, very unique coloration, I too sadly just had a betta who recently passed away but now I have a plakat dragonscale betta, who is now living happily as the centerpiece fish in a 15 gallon.
Congrats on 50k. My betta fish just passed away and I really couldn't get another halfmoon it would just remind me too much of my old betta. So I ordered Betta Imbellis from Thailand through a trans shiper in Europe. It was costly but I know fish will arrive without delay and very fast.
If you're in the west coast area it's 1 day shipping for sd wild betta. For imbellis, mahachaiensis, macrostoma and probably more. I haven't bought one yet still saving up but that's the place I'm going to get one
It's always a good idea to quarantine fish! Love that betta. In my area, the Petsmarts have better fish than Petcos, but that has been changing every couple of years. Also, congratulations on 50k!

Petco does have some nice bettas. but I I really want an all black one. I think they're the best looking betta's. Bye the way that all blue betta is absolutely stunning
I just went into petco and I can't say I wasn't impressed with the "health" of the fish they really did look much better then they used to in the past! Seems like that may be where I get my first betta! Have my aquarium started but am going to be getting some plants in there for a week or 2 before I even introduce my fish
They also have online betta stores or betta sellers now on Facebook that are in the US especially here in the Midwest. They're your general betta enthusiasts who's also trying to create a side Hustle. They'll ship the betta right to you.
I’ve always noticed that PetSmart has the crappiest looking Bettas as far as health goes.😕 Petco has always had healthy and beautiful looking Bettas, as well as a good variety.
The rice fields a few hours away from my house they sell the bettas they breed but they are completely domestic but they all live in like nets in the rice fields like how fish farms are and the bettas i get from there are beautiful they are always a darker color when i bring them home but that's just cause of the tone in the rice fields if anyone lives in Thailand, Indonesia or Malaysia go to the rice fields they sometimes have people selling bettas for quite cheap to maybe 15rm for a veiltail
Ive been watching you since i got my betta, which is 4 months ago!!!! I was so surprised that you got a paradise betta because that’s the kind of betta I also have !! 🥰
I just got Sonic's twin yesterday, lol - if people don't want to go out to their local Petco, and don't mind paying for shipping cost, they can buy bettas online at Petco. I have done this before and the quality is generally very good, and often they ship younger ones.
PetCo has the best betta varieties of all the petchain stores. I personally like the doubletails because I love that long dorsal that blends right into the tail. I also enjoy the more colorful galaxy type....particularly the Avatar Galaxy type. Anyway....yeah, bettas are cool fish and fun to keep for sure !
I agree with what you said about preferring a solid color Betta. I just bought one after looking for a while to find the one I wanted. Only problem I have is Identifying his species. The guy in the store told me but I forgot what he said it was. To bad By the way your videos are just great, keep up the great work.
I have a paradise betta named Little Bee from petco, too. He's a super happy little fish and seems healthy, but he's slowly getting more and more blue in his yellow fins... I guess they just turn the color they want to!
I got a male twin tail half-moon betta fish I got a couple of weeks ago from Petsmart and a red betta fish I got a 1 ago and all my betta fish will do is Stat and started at the other fish and my red betta fish sometimes will eat and I got my guppies from Petsmart and some dies a couple days later and some died a days later and some died couple of week and now I am trying treta from Petsmart and they seem to be doing good
The Petco nearest to me is BAD with their fish care, especially bettas. But if I go to the ones further away then they have healthier fish and way more variety. It's not that chain stores are bad, it is just some chain stores I guess.
I have a paradise male too!! He was beautiful but he got sick and i cant seem to get rid of it. He acts like normal though so i feel he is at least happy even if he doesnt have his normal colors.
Question. I have been told by Betta Breeders that you can control the sex of your fry at the egg stage by altering the water temp. So the question is have you ever heard of this method and if so what are the water parameters for each sex? Looking forward to your help
Yesssssss! Another BMG lover! I was looking for this particular coloration and ended up going with Petco too. Mine has started showing some silvering on his back over the months. I can't wait to add some ember tetras in with him once my plants grow out some 😁😁😁
My beautiful dumbo from Switzerland died recently... He jumped out and was dried up completely by the time I found him... Now waiting for lockdown to be over and warmer weather so I can find a new one for the tank which I have kept in pristine condition
i would have thought you named him sonic because of his blue body and sonics side kick tails is yellow which is cool because the tail of the betta is yellow too
Sonic is a really good name ^_^ thanks for the shout out! I will probably be selling my marble plakats sometime soon..I'm just hesitant because of the post office issues. Im worried about the higher risk that my fish could get lost in the mail. Now is a very tricky time to ship fish...so I might have to wait a bit more and try to sell as many as possible locally as well.
I always thought about having a fresh water fish tank, but I am scared that I would make a mistake and cause harm onto the fish, so I prefer to admire fish tanks from afar especially betta fish. Always fun to watch fish keeper channels like yours, and you have an awesome avatar. Got yourself a new subscriber.
My beta recently died of what I believe was columnaris. no matter what I treated him with, sadly he just never got better. So I’m looking for another one, but I am wondering what do I need to do to his tank water besides water changes to make sure the new fish doesn’t get the same disease? And if I put him in a quarantine tank for a month first, do you put anything in there like aquarium salt to treat him before releasing him into the permanent tank? Or since he’s going to be alone in a 10 gallon tank, maybe I don’t need to put him in a quarantine tank at all?
Great video! Is it against YT policy for you to say what LFS that footage is from? I'm local to Denver and am on the hunt for a betta. Will definitely be checking MB Aquatics, but more options would be great! Trying to avoid big box stores. Thanks!
This video is super timely for me as my tank is finally cycled and ready for my new betta friend! I searched for breeders here in Atlanta and had zero luck. Also I can't seem to find a good aquarium store that's local. So it seems I'm going the Petco route too!
I love betta fish! I've always got mine from a local store. There are quite alot of blue and yellow pokemon, you could have named him after one of those. Good choice though, he looks healthy, hopefully you will have him for a long time :)
I know this video came out before KG Tropicals started selling online. But for anyone watching this video now definitely check their website for Betta and their RUclips channel is great
A top quality betta imported from Thailand costs ₹350 (max) in India which is less than 5USD. You guys end up paying 10X more for the same fish in USA...
Your face in the thumbnail represents the joy of looking at betta fish 😁😂🤗 Of course, I started out with the ones from the big box stores and I have ordered a pair online! They're just so many wonderful choices how do you pick one? 🤔 Thanks Irene I really enjoyed the video and I hope you have a very blessed weekend! 👍🌱🐟🌱💚
I went to a Petco in Aurora a couple days ago and they had SO many good ones, but also lots of sad ones that looked on their way out. They’ve been getting giants in, though, and I’m soooooo tempted.

I was surprised I got a all white butterfly betta. I was super happy
Is it safe to buy from liveaquaria?
Ive been watching you since i got my betta, which is 4 months ago!!!! I was so surprised that you got a paradise betta because that’s the kind of betta I also have !! 🥰
That's awesome! Great minds think alike. ;)
I love your Betta fish videos!
Oh nooo! I hope Sonic doesn't turn all blue or people won't be able to tell the difference between him and Soundwave!
@@GirlTalksFish hope not! So sorry to hear about Sound Wave, I'm sure he had a great life with you! ❤
I got my betta at petsmart haven't named him yet . I also got 3 salt & pepper corys as tank mates. They getting along wonderful.
That's awesome! It took me at least 3 weeks to find the perfect name for Sonic.
Where is your local fish store? I am in Colorado as well and will be looking for a new betta in the next couple months!
Lovely Video!
Question. I have been told by Betta Breeders that you can control the sex of your fry at the egg stage by altering the water temp. So the question is have you ever heard of this method and if so what are the water parameters for each sex? Looking forward to your help
Thank you so much for the shout out. Looking good for your new betta🙏👍🔥
Yay! I’m so happy for you 😊
Congrats on your new fish! He is beautiful 🤩
Thank you so much! I'm so glad to have a betta in our household again.
Can you put a sponge over a hob intake instead of a sponge filter. Which is better?
Hey, where is that local fish store you visited? I'm in CO and need to check that out! Love your videos!
Me too! Would love to check.out that store.
My area is the opposite, the Petco is terrible and the PetSmart has active bettas.
Yeah, I've definitely heard it varies from area to area based on the managers.
@@GirlTalksFish I’ve noticed that too.
i would have thought you named him sonic because of his blue body and sonics side kick tails is yellow which is cool because the tail of the betta is yellow too
Bruh the butterfly male on the thumbnail is literally the same exact one I have 😭
So beautiful.. beautiful Beta will look great in your tank.
I had a kio betta and it stayed the same color.
Ur vedio thumbnail betta is the same as mine love ur content very informative and interesting 😃
Me and my girls bought a betta today that looks almost exactly like Soundwave. They named him Squirtle lol.
Aww, cuuuute! My kids are really into Pokemon right now too.
Totally understand! I'm overrun with baby fish too, especially since my local fish club hasn't held any auctions in forever.
@@GirlTalksFish it seems everyone is having the same issue. Goes to show how vital local fish clubs are to moving fish around the hobby.
Thank you and welcome!
Have you seen Prism Bettas I believe she is located in Illinois... she has beautiful bettas!!!!!
Congrats on 50k- Welcome Sonic- I own two mustard gas bettas- prettiest bettas I’ve ever had-good luck with your new addition!
How cool! I wish I could see your bettas.
Very informative and always great videos Irene. Thank you.
Excellent video & information. Thanks. 😊
Ni Malaysia have 2 type of betta fish One of them name ikan laga kampong and the other ikan laga
But for anyone watching this video now definitely check their website for Betta and their RUclips channel is great
My favorite Betta color, mainly because I've never had them go through any color change.
A top quality betta imported from Thailand costs ₹350 (max) in India which is less than 5USD. You guys end up paying 10X more for the same fish in USA...
Your face in the thumbnail represents the joy of looking at betta fish 😁😂🤗
Of course, I started out with the ones from the big box stores and I have ordered a pair online!
Did you name soundwave after the decepticon in transformers? He has similar colors
So in the beginning of the video where is that fish store or place
First!
Congratulations on your 50k subscribers!
Thank you very much for like!
