I’ve been wanting to see a video about all of the items from Mario Kart. The fact that you explained all the ones you could is doubly great! An extra bit of information is that the exploding black loops shells from the arcade games could be a reference to the bombshell koopas from Super Mario Land

"The bane of competitive player's existence" no. The blue shell is actually much more necessary within a competitive context VS a casual context and a really simple way to understand why is considering the threats present in first vs the other places. In first you only have to worry about the player behind you, and because they're only in second their items will most often be average at best, vs in any other place you have to worry about the items of both the player in front of and behind you and those items will be more powerful. Because of this the middle positions are extremely volatile, while whoever's in first can focus on simply driving well, trading out their items, placing traps, and growing their lead. In casual play this doesn't really matter because no one knows the best lines/how to trap/is focusing on anything beyond having fun, but when everyone knows the best lines, first place becomes VERY op. The blue shell insures, at the very least, first place cannot be content with just cruising along and holding a banana in case of a red shell, they have to actively be checking the map to make sure they have a lead such that they can handle a blue shell, and if not they need to be placing traps/planning for the possibility of a blue shell happening. Whether the blue shell is the best solution to this or not... idk, but for sure 1st place would be overpowered if there were no blue shell combined with the current item system.
