David Crosby passed away today at the ripe age of 81. Respect to this absolute rock legend. Amongst all the hits you wrote in your amazing career, with the Byrds, solo and CSNY, I chose this "Almost Cut My Hair" to remember you. It is my favorite song because of your touching vocals, your powerful message and your beautiful soul. Rest in peace.
Whoever you are, I hope the love of good, true art never makes you overdo things and hurt those close to you. I have, and it's just way too much to handle much of the time. Well, I'm babbling too long now. Thank you for sharing

I'm sitting here crying and wondering why I'm crying for David when I didn't for Bowie or Prince or so many others. I think it's because David's continued existence (in the face of all his troubles) was a symbol of defiance to me…and thus a symbol of hope. Not merely our gratitude, but to "not give in an inch to fear", in the face of a world that wants us huddled, frightened and conforming in every way. Not one fucking INCH. Rest in Power, David.
Well, I cried for all 3. But, I do connect with your higher level thoughts here. David was an inspiration for me also. When we lose a Great, we cry. The vast musical landscape gives us many opportunities to cry, unfortunately as we grow older.

The upside of this story related 2 the music. In a fit of jealousy of his younger and more talented brother Jethro(who also had drank many steins himself) attacked Him with his flute stabbing him only 2" from his heart through his lung. After forcing Jethro to sign over his estate he kills his older brother. The doctors tried an experiential treatment with medication. This forced him to have the flute which was left in his lung for two weeks. While the response of the medication worked he learned how to play the flute by breathing in to it by his lung. I'm a son of a bald man, with a bald brother and bald uncles... The bald men's familly... At 16 years old I knew I would be bald... I strated to let my hair grow until my nipples. Long hair for 4 years and baldness arrived... Today I'm 38 years old, I'm bald and I still need this song at regular time. The sound of a life. My nieces are 14 and 12 years old, I made them listening to Dejà Vu... She told me "you look older because you are bald, but you are really cool with such music" :-)
I wasn't bald until I got cancer. Now, after surgery and chemo, hair is a thing of the past, but my love of great music and life is stronger than ever.
Hi max better late than never! The 60s and 70s music will blow your mind with the musicianship, the lyrics, etc. They still have meaning today! Enjoy brother!
Still sounds so fresh. Where has the time gone? You know the older you become you realise that time gathers pace. Wish I knew then what I know now.( another famous lyric )😎
There's a big truth in this song. 44 years later it still makes sense. How the hell did we go from music like this to KPop boy bands in two generations without some serious questions being asked?
***** no man, the point is you shouldn't have to treasure hunt for this stuff today. The stuff in the mainstream is garbage, and that's NOT ok. these old groups have soul and messages and science mixed with art mixed with philosophy. its effing brilliant, and we desperately need it back today.
***** you dont get my point, i said you shouldnt have to dig for it. and even whats there is just a shell, hollow music for a hollow generation. the point is not to try to be mainstream, but to try to be good for musics sake. bands today might think they do that, but through over emulation they degrade themselves.
SameBasicRiff You're damn right. I would say: this song can't be taken out of a can... this is art, you have to cook it slowly, let the musicians make it happen. This is not something under the laws of marketing, production,... whilst one can produce (literally) stupid songs, played by pretty faces, and sell it around the world. It's the old soulless way vs art. We have art around us, as Niall says, let's hope it doesn't get too deep into the dark side. That's my point.
Best interpay of Stills and Young guitars ever. Sounded this good live too during the 4 Way Street tour. Saw it in Portland, OR; 4 hours on stage not including breaks. Floated out of the Memorial Coliseum after it was over.
What is more amazing to me than this awesome version of one of my rebel songs is how the extended jam almost perfectly resembles Freebird, down to the repeated bent note refrain. Uncanny...
My favourite song of all time., I'm 62 & have been listening to music since I was 12, Bought my first record player at 13, saved my money from delivering newspapers and magazines.
when you consider the powerful vocal, the symbolism of resistance against a system that does very bad things, this IMO has to be considered one of the most important songs of the rock era or any other for that matter.
I believe in my heart of hearts If Mozart, Beethoven, Bach or Chopin heard the arrangement of this song they would be very pleased especially the guitar work and how it is inter woven one stops as another picks up...Genius pure and simple.
I believe all of them would be blown away if they could here the likes of bands like this, or yes, or pink floyd, etc. These guys are all in the same league in my music hof.
I face that everyday. Being from India and listening to classic rock, blues and jazz is a rarity when people are dancing mindlessly to bollywood crap. Luckily, I have a couple of friends who share my same interest.
David Crosby Has such A great voice. I am currently growing out my hair and i play this song every day on guitar to remind me why. I love the stills guitar style
Recorded just a few days after David Crosby's girlfriend Christine Hinton had died in a car accident. You can hear the pain in his voice. The recording was done in one take.
Good thing we have youtube , so we can have a look in the past and see where it all went wrong , music is so dead these days , the simple lyrics that goes so deep , you are still thinking about it next month ! the soul , the rhythm , the awesome guitar , this was music ! simply magnificent
Hi, roughneckghost ... such a long name ... anyway, I have been collecting albums for decades and it is very diverse. I do not really care for a lot of what is called music (for the masses) for the most part. There are exceptions. The harmonics that Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young had going on was extraordinary and was an inner experience besides the listening and normal enjoyment. Damn, I do miss the sixties like crazy ... they were some incredible times, I must say. I also feel that the 30s and 40s might have been an interesting time to be young in. Being young anytime is a good thing ... too bad that when we are young, we have no clue that it goes so fast ... after all, no one can tell kids anything. We, people, pretty much learn the hard way; through experience ... the good and the not so good. Hope all is well with you. Take care.
Minahh you're a wise woman ) .... my name derives from my old clan Roughnecks ... i was Ghost .. im still Ghost ... and i think we are all Ghosts ... metaphorical speaking ... in 200 years from now , 3 generations further, nobody will ever know from us .. all the people that ever spoke to us , saw us, interact with us will be gone , the only proof that we ever existed will be the blood in our grand grand children ... and im not planning to make any in this sick cruel world ))
Minahh We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for listeners located outside of the U.S., Australia and New Zealand. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative. =/
When I have a bad day or things just seem just out of sorts, I listen to this song and when the Guitar Solos start I just take off into another place. This song is amazing!
I've been listening to these guys for 40 years, & I never get tired of this great music. Crosby, Steals, the Hash, from Young. Even now thier music makes such a bold statement. "When I finally get myself togehter, I'm gonna get down to that sunny southern weather" That's where I'm headin' soon. It's ALL STILL GOOD. Dave "Who's still kickin'"
How times change, this is real music. This is the real deal, people who believed that we could change the world thru peace, love, understanding, and tolerance! We have lost something precious along the way. Every thing is on machines as far as music. We have lost our creativity as humans who appreciate the sound of pleasure. May God saves us from the machines and inspire. Beings to make that beats in their hearts!
I’ve had long hair since I left school in ‘68, and have been under pressure to cut it shorter ever since. I always come back to this song, my hair is still long, just as I like it. RIP Mr C.
Well we're lucky enough to still have the music. Having grown up the era would have meant living amongst the societies that these guys so strongly poeticise against
Jimmy McGill for the music, yes... but I am glad that I did not have to see my family and friends go off to fight and die in a war that made no sense, and see people die in the streets of this country for the right to eat at a counter with other humans... we have come so far... and this generation did so much and they suffered greatly for it... so I am glad to live in this time... even though the music mostly sux... at least what is mainstream... I suggest looking into local underground music....
Amelia Kate Production's Yeah, but then you'd be old like the rest of us, and if you were a guy, nature would've taken care of that whole long hair/short hair issue.
My husband surprised me with tickets to see these guys, had to be 15 years ago now at least. They walked on stage, began to play and I cried for 45 minutes.
70 years old , been listening to this song since I got 4-Way Street back in early 70s, still in highschool. This song is like a life story for me. Hair down to my waist, belt line in a ponytail. This song or group never get old......
I am 20 and this is my favourite song. The vocals are so raw and true, the instruments complement the message of the song so well. I too feel like I owe it to someone. RIP Crosby ❤
Was thee anthem of its time. Long hair totally represented and stood for social change, rebellion, and embracement of the movement of love, freedom, power. The long hairs of the late 18th and early 19th century were wholly negated
Anti war and peace. I was 14 years old and had patches on the patches of my old blue jeans. Time for another revolution LAROUCHEPAC.COM our Constitutional right by the people for the people.
Crosby Stills and Nash had this great attitude to them. When I listen to them I feel a great deal of inspiration, good thoughts actually flood into my head. To me they they are a symbol of strength. When I listen to them they inspire me to have no fear, to be strong, and most importantly.. to smile and enjoy the music.
Tom, from Longview, and others, frequently found themselves in my dorm room - 3rd floor, Lander Hall, UW, Seattle, 1970, and I couldn't get them out until I had queued up and played this song. I had the floor's best stereo - the sound was incredible. Fantastic song - fantastic sound.

I played this song every day when I was in the dutch navy in 1971. Still remember how much I loved this song. Absolutely amazing. In 1973 we were allowed to let our hair grow in the Navy. We were called the 'woodstock navy'. What a fantastic time it was. And what a fantastic song.
How cool is that? Love it!
Hoi Peter, je Bahrain buurman Kees hier. I still love this song too!
@@CKemp-o1g Hoi Kees, what a surprise to hear from you. You still have the Harley ? CSNY has always been my favorite band. Send my regards to Yvonne.Hope everything is OK with you guys.
@@peterverbon2742 Hi Peter, I sold the Harley when I left Bahrain. It is too cold to ride in Europe without an eskimo outfit! Now living is Scotland but with a view to moving to the Mediterranean for "that sunny southern weather" All good here. Hope you are all well too.
neil and stills are so goddamn great at playing off each other with the guitar lines. it's such a perfect guitar duet.
RIP David Crosby
I'm a son of a bald man, with a bald brother and bald uncles... The bald men's familly... At 16 years old I knew I would be bald... I strated to let my hair grow until my nipples. Long hair for 4 years and baldness arrived...
Today I'm 38 years old, I'm bald and I still need this song at regular time. The sound of a life. My nieces are 14 and 12 years old, I made them listening to Dejà Vu... She told me "you look older because you are bald, but you are really cool with such music" :-)
Thank you for great share and keeping the love alive with the youth. Bald long hair. Thats the hair in our souls that you never should cut.
I wasn't bald until I got cancer. Now, after surgery and chemo, hair is a thing of the past, but my love of great music and life is stronger than ever.
Cool story I injoyed it thanks
Sweet kid she is.
I F*cking love this! 35 and im only beginning to discover the class of 70's music. What an era!!!
I'm 37. Dont stop now man !!
Hi max better late than never! The 60s and 70s music will blow your mind with the musicianship, the lyrics, etc. They still have meaning today! Enjoy brother!
Keep digging. It gets deeper!!
Come on in, the waters just fine.
Welcome to the best music ever recorded. Coz rocks.
Still sounds so fresh.
Where has the time gone?
You know the older you become you realise that time gathers pace. Wish I knew then what I know now.( another famous lyric )😎
Can you all read “hotel California “ by barney.
The book captures what exactly what was going on in laurel canyon back in the day.😎
Don't it tho!? 68 here🥂cheers🎄
I've heard songs as good as this song, I've never heard one better though
And you never will.......
Jim Koy right on brother
No doubt
Jim Koy yeah man, great comment!
I've heard better. It's a very good song, but I've heard better.
Miss being free at 16 again. 68 yo here. Get the goosebumps listening. Love them, all of you . Jo
There's a big truth in this song. 44 years later it still makes sense. How the hell did we go from music like this to KPop boy bands in two generations without some serious questions being asked?
its called mind control
Callum Davage yawn.
Best interpay of Stills and Young guitars ever. Sounded this good live too during the 4 Way Street tour. Saw it in Portland, OR; 4 hours on stage not including breaks. Floated out of the Memorial Coliseum after it was over.
wow that must have been amazing! Floating no doubt!
@@collinmc90 Ya, contact high from all the pot smoke in the Memorial Coliseum. The old days. Everybody smoked everywhere, even in movie theaters.
listen to '4 way street' album of a generation
@@davidbean4365 Have it. Plus seeing it live.
They played for 4 hours in Hartford when I saw them as well, magnificent!
My first time hearing the extended version. Excellent!
Best song on Deja Vu.
Best CSNY song with Neil and Stills playing off each other, twin leads.
Crosby' s vocal tone was unreal.
Pentatonic perfection.
What is more amazing to me than this awesome version of one of my rebel songs is how the extended jam almost perfectly resembles Freebird, down to the repeated bent note refrain. Uncanny...
71 and still listening 2024
My favourite song of all time., I'm 62 & have been listening to music since I was 12, Bought my first record player at 13, saved my money from delivering newspapers and magazines.
when you consider the powerful vocal, the symbolism of resistance against a system that does very bad things, this IMO has to be considered one of the most important songs of the rock era or any other for that matter.
Totally agree!
ABSOLUTELY.
Right on!
I believe in my heart of hearts If Mozart, Beethoven, Bach or Chopin heard the arrangement of this song they would be very pleased especially the guitar work and how it is inter woven one stops as another picks up...Genius pure and simple.
That's a nice sentiment.
I believe all of them would be blown away if they could here the likes of bands like this, or yes, or pink floyd, etc.
These guys are all in the same league in my music hof.
@@quantumleap4023 well I owe it to someone
If you're going to be different you're going to pay a price. Be different. Pay the price.
That MIGHT be a tattoo Tom!
I face that everyday. Being from India and listening to classic rock, blues and jazz is a rarity when people are dancing mindlessly to bollywood crap. Luckily, I have a couple of friends who share my same interest.
Jomy mathew be strong cheer from france !
Yes .... But now you can hear it
@@torresmessi1 never have I related to a comment on RUclips so much!!! Greetings, fellow blues brother from India.

I ❤this band still and i was born in 68 flower power lives on sad to see one go but music lives forever 😢🎉✌️
David Crosby Has such A great voice. I am currently growing out my hair and i play this song every day on guitar to remind me why. I love the stills guitar style
It's referring to the draft.
All you guys that served, you are heroes!
Recorded just a few days after David Crosby's girlfriend Christine Hinton had died in a car accident. You can hear the pain in his voice. The recording was done in one take.
Long time ago
I have this box set of CD's .
I love David....great!!!!
She died in 1969. I believe this was recorded June 9th 1970.
This is the unreleased unedited live version. Recorded as said at Wally Heider's Studio C, San Francisco but the date was actually January 9, 1970.
the best generation ever thank you the list is to long to name you folks were so on it cant even say but good stuff
Good thing we have youtube , so we can have a look in the past and see where it all went wrong , music is so dead these days , the simple lyrics that goes so deep , you are still thinking about it next month ! the soul , the rhythm , the awesome guitar , this was music ! simply magnificent
Young people today don't bother to learn how to play a fucking instrument!
Are you outside of those areas?
im a hippie at heart love makes the world go round !! Peace !!
When I have a bad day or things just seem just out of sorts, I listen to this song and when the Guitar Solos start I just take off into another place. This song is amazing!
Yes yes
Could not of said it any better my friend.
I turn it up LOUD and I am right back there man in my long-haired hippy happy days.
Omg RIP there will never a person like David crosby ever again
I've been listening to these guys for 40 years, & I never get tired of this great music. Crosby, Steals, the Hash, from Young. Even now thier music makes such a bold statement. "When I finally get myself togehter, I'm gonna get down to that sunny southern weather" That's where I'm headin' soon. It's ALL STILL GOOD. Dave "Who's still kickin'"

One of the greatest voices in music ever for me

How times change, this is real music.
This is the real deal, people who believed that we could change the world thru peace, love, understanding, and tolerance!
We have lost something precious along the way.
Every thing is on machines as far as music.
We have lost our creativity as humans who appreciate the sound of pleasure. May God saves us from the machines and inspire. Beings to make that beats in their hearts!
We haven't lost it, we've just misplaced it.......
We were used by globalists to usher in their globalist great reset.
I’ve had long hair since I left school in ‘68, and have been under pressure to cut it shorter ever since. I always come back to this song, my hair is still long, just as I like it. RIP Mr C.
i wish i had grown up in this era just for the amazing music
Well we're lucky enough to still have the music. Having grown up the era would have meant living amongst the societies that these guys so strongly poeticise against
Jimmy McGill for the music, yes... but I am glad that I did not have to see my family and friends go off to fight and die in a war that made no sense, and see people die in the streets of this country for the right to eat at a counter with other humans... we have come so far... and this generation did so much and they suffered greatly for it... so I am glad to live in this time... even though the music mostly sux... at least what is mainstream... I suggest looking into local underground music....
Amelia Kate Production's Yeah, but then you'd be old like the rest of us, and if you were a guy, nature would've taken care of that whole long hair/short hair issue.
yes ... it was incredible. Every week great music - creative, inspiring, awesome. A real watershed of musical genius

No regrets whatsoever living life on this era. Treasured best years of my life.
My husband surprised me with tickets to see these guys, had to be 15 years ago now at least. They walked on stage, began to play and I cried for 45 minutes.
Fantastic song.
Neil is tearing that shit up yall listen
My dear friend Enrique loved this song.He passed away 50 years ago .....still miss him❤
70 years old , been listening to this song since I got 4-Way Street back in early 70s, still in highschool. This song is like a life story for me. Hair down to my waist, belt line in a ponytail. This song or group never get old......
Remembering my friend EGW loved this song may he rest in peace❤
You will be missed David! R.I.P. brother ✌️

What a version..... 😮
This song is so awesome, i have my kids listening to it, and they love it, this is straight up how music should sound
Right on! Same here 🤘

Sin duda, el mejor tema de David Crosby. Grandioso, impresionante. Que descanse en paz.
That amp and reverb tank of Neil's... unmistakable.
