Pavaratti is an opera/classical singer, so staring forward in this type of setting is a bit normal; however, I have had the pleasure of being in a Master's Class with him, and he specifically said he is always nervous singing in English, since he doesn't speak it well.
You are correct Pavarotti sings in Italian and speaks little English. If you look closely there is a teleprompter in front of them and between them that probably had the words in English. The device is what is used when people are giving speeches and allows the speaker to look up and read his speech

I actually commented this on the original video, but yes it’s widely known that Luciano had a difficult time singing anything that wasn’t Italian...and even difficulties sometimes in Italian if he didn’t know the music well (watch the interview with Richard Bonynge about Pavarotti) because Pavarotti wasn’t fluent in reading music...so during this performance with Celine his eyes are fixed in the teleprompter for the English words
Brilliant..Luciano Pavarotti showed the Classical/Opera world that he could work with just about any modern day musicians, Rock etc and make it magical..The whole concert of Pavarotti and Friends was a magical event..and yes I am sure he was following auto-cue to get the english words just right..another favourite of mine from that concert was U2 and Luciano performing "Miss Sarajevo" Keep Strong Keep Safe My Dear Friend
I love Pavarotti xx if I need a smile I listen and watch him with Brian Adams.. the enjoyment comes from the interaction, the looks and expressions between the two xx I also cant go past Pavarottis Mans World with James Brown. if you haven't seen it then do .. two greats, language barrier crushed, love speaks in the music. Also with U2... miss Sarajevo is unforgettable, moving, and so emotional when Pavarotti sings make Bono look like a beginner xxx It would be great to see reactions to these :) xx
