Compagnia europea de " The Lord of the Dance".
Lo spettacolo si svolge in una terra celtica chiamata “Pianeta Irlanda”, con evidenti riferimenti all’antica Irlanda. Tutto l’impianto musicale è intessuto di temi celtici, anche se la melodia del brano principale fu composta nel 1848 negli USA da Joseph Brackett e intitolata “Simple Gift”. Il brano conquistò un certa fama nel 1944 grazie al compositore Aaron Copland, che lo utilizzò per le musiche del balletto “Appalachian Spring”, con Martha Graham come prima ballerina. Nel 1963 fu arrangiato dal cantautore inglese Sydney Carter e adattato a un nuovo testo che si ispirava alla figura di Gesù come “pifferaio magico” e al Dio Shiva, chiamato dagli Indù “Signore della Danza”. La nuova versione divenne subito molto popolare, soprattutto nel Nord Europa e negli Usa. Nel 1996 Ronan Haridman realizzò l'arrangiamento con il quale ha conquistato fama planetaria grazie a quello che tanti considerano, non a torto, lo spettacolo più bello del mondo, “Lord of the Dance", coreografato e interpretato da quel portento della danza che risponde al nome di Michael Flatley.
In 21 quadri coreografici si assiste alla lotta del Signore della Danza contro il malvagio signore oscuro Don Dorcha per conquistare il “Pianeta Irlanda”. Il Signore della Danza è aiutato da un piccolo spirito, un folletto-fata, che inizialmente appare come una sorta di giullare di corte, eternamente positivo, sempre pronto a danzare e a sorridere. Lo spettacolo inizia proprio con il piccolo spirito che suona la melodia "Il Signore della Danza", da solo, con un piccolo piffero, prima che le forze oscure arrivino e prendano il sopravvento sui Celti. All’interno della storia principale si sviluppa anche il tema dell’amore contro la lussuria, espresso attraverso la danza di due donne in lotta tra loro per conquistare il cuore del Signore della Danza. Saoirse, cailín irlandese, ossia ragazza gaelica che incarna la giovinezza, la dolcezza e l’energia vitale (sempre vestita in bianco o con colori vivaci) combatte contro la malvagia Morrighan, la Tentatrice (vestita di rosso o nero). L’eterna lotta tra bene e male, nel cuore di una natura potente e divinizzata, che scandisce le stagioni dell’uomo e lo piega alle sue leggi, si conclude con la vittoria dell’algido Lord of the Dance sul cattivo Dark Lord e la vittoria di Saoirse su Morrighan. Lo spiritello col piffero, intanto, ci ricorda, ogni volta che entra in scena, il fascino di una terra magica capace di catturare per sempre chiunque si addentri in essa, percorrendo i sentieri del tempo alla ricerca di miti e leggende che si fondono, in un inestricabile e appassionato intreccio, con una storia millenaria.

The beginning segment has the dancers dressed like snow fairies from a Walt Disney movie,then in the segment known as 'break-out", the women are now dancing in their underwear 😮!!! Shame on Michael Flatley for ruining what was once a great show. And yes it's his fault because he was the creator and director. I have the show from Dublin 1996 memorized. What happened in this show, to Don Dorcha the Dark lord and his army ?Morighan the temptress had her dance right after Don Dorcha but in this show, it went from the fiddlers straight to "break-out". Bad enough that the Ronan Hardiman music is gone but now the costumes are getting wierd, rediculous and even sleazy. This show was supposed to celebrate Ireland and it's music and dance culture. Considering the fact that Ireland is a heavily Catholic country, I have a hard time believing that they approve of women dancing nearly naked. Thankfully, Riverdance is still classy and tasteful and there is nothing about it , to make you cringe,or walk out in embarrassment. There are other Irish dance shows, not created by Michael, that stay true to tne theme of Irish culture and heritage. What a shame that Lord of the Dance, once a powerhouse show, is now a series of uninspiring and trashy performances. It's been ruined. 😮
Ireland isn't predominantly Catholic it's a mixed bag these days just like every other country in the world
