    As a European tourist who visited New York City this summer, I only discovered Six Flags Great Adventure after researching where this massive roller coaster, Kingda Ka, was located. I was lucky enough to ride it twice with my girlfriend, and honestly, we probably wouldn’t have visited the park if it weren’t for Kingda Ka. We had no clue about El Toro, Jersey Devil, Nitro, or many of the other coasters until just a few days before our visit. Kingda Ka is truly Six Flags Great Adventure's flagship ride and a technological masterpiece-you realize that the moment you enter the park.
    Six Flags really needs to invest more in advertising, especially in places like New York and Philadelphia, instead of focusing on adding new rides. We didn’t see anything about the park in either city! Kingda Ka was the sole reason we decided to visit, and I’m sure we’re not the only ones who feel that way.

      As a New Yorker, better public transportation would help a ton. And now that Great Adventure is also becoming an on-site resort, a secondary train line between New York City (population 8 million, not counting surrounding suburbs which enjoy great train access to the central business district and, therefore, connecting trains) and Philadelphia has never looked more appropriate.
      The state-operated transit agency, NJ Transit, used to run a bus from NYC, but of course those only carry 57 people at a time. And COVID has sadly shaken up a ton of New Jersey buses; a private operator had to take over after NJ Transit canceled that one bus to the park.

The trip was supposed to happen only in NYC, but since my parents knew I loved amusement parks (and we don't have a lot of high end parks around here in Brazil), they took me to Six Flags. I only rode Ka once, and I remember it was such a cloudy day that the tower was above the clouds, yet they were still operating the ride. Unless Six Flags Great Adventure releases an official statement confirming the closure or demolition of Kingda Ka, I believe the most likely scenario is a replacement of the hydraulic launch system with an LSM launch, similar to what’s been done with Top Thrill 2. It’s also possible they’ll retrack some of the more stressed sections where high G-forces are affecting the track. I highly doubt they would remove their record-breaking coaster entirely without clear communication.

      @@JoeyH-sb3fq I disagree. Intamin has been on Cedar Fair's bad list for years now, mostly because of the headache some of their rides have been to maintain. Now that they've merged with Six Flags, it could be an opportunity for a fresh start with Intamin, and if it were to pay off it would place them back on the newly merged company's good list, which just means a large number of parks that would now be able to get new Intamin made rides. So I have to think that Intamin would absolutely be willing to take on the project.

    Tearing down Ka/Zumanjaro, the attendance and PR setback of losing 2 of the park's headlining attractions (including one of the most iconic coasters on the planet), and building a ride worthy of replacing both of those would easily cost GAdv more than just continuing to maintain it for another decade, or just getting a more reliable company than Zamperla to convert it into an LSM. The only logical reason to tear it down is so Cedar Point can advertise TT2 as the tallest/fastest coaster in America for its grand re-reopening. And if you doubt that Cedar Fair would get dirty to help their favorite park just look at what they did with Geauga Lake.

But we still traveled around a lot to ride coasters, I just never cared to learn about them since I didn't know coaster enthusiasts are a thing. There are only two coasters that I really knew about back then: Kingda Ka and Millennium Force, they are so famous that even with limited access to media I still know about them.
    Then we moved to NJ in 2018 and I knew I had to ride Kingda Ka. I loved that ride so much that I started to look up coasters for the first time and learned all about the manufactures, the elements, the physics and science and engineering behind coasters, and the awesome coaster community of enthusiasts. I am gonna point out. As having my home park be Knotts berry farm, run by cedar fair, a year or so back xcelerator came back from a multi year shutdown and it has been running fantastically with minimal downtime since. Cedar fair is not blindly removing every hydraulic launch they had, it’s on a different scale but they were putting in a lot of work and a lot of money on xcelerator, so while runouts are scary, cedar fair has acted in different ways to hydraulic launches needing fixes on different coasters

    • @ToaOfFusion
      @ToaOfFusion 2 месяца назад +6

      The difference between Xcelerator and something like Kingda Ka and the original Top Thrill Dragster is that Xcelerator is much smaller and not as fast, meaning that wear-and-tear and maintenance is not as intense compared to the latter two coasters. It's even possible some of the old parts from Top Thrill Dragster were used as spare parts for Xcelerator, which could be why it's up-and-running like normal again.

    • @thedalekditto15
      @thedalekditto15 2 месяца назад +2

      @@ToaOfFusion agreed, I mentioned the difference in scale but it is a massive factor. I hadn’t considered the idea of top thrills parts being used on xcelerator but it does sound plausible and would be damming, as Knotts has literally no space so they’d essentially have to take it down or keep the launch. So there is a chance that they aren’t willing to keep any out of that circumstance. I still think it makes it more likely they are not gonna remove it, but I see the point.

    • @TheNinjaDC
      @TheNinjaDC 2 месяца назад

      Xcelerator has two advantages that make it likely to stay longer.
      One, it is a smaller coaster that has less intense forces and wear and tear.
      Two, it is a compact headliner coaster that would be hard to find a replacement that fits its land size. Knott's is incredibly land locked park, and Xcelerator is right on the edge of the property line. A worthy headliner replacement for Ka is an easy fit at GA in contrast.

    posted this on coaster studios's video and reposting here since it sums up my thoughts very well:
    so a lot of the rumors talk about replacing this with another 400ft tall coaster, right? usually the mack xtreme spinner shuttle we saw. i just don't understand in which universe that's a better decision!!
    - while mack are reliable, they have yet to make a coaster that tall, and their current tallest coaster, hyperia, did have some issues upon opening
    - but let's say you full trust mack, fair enough! can't you just trust THEM to lsm kingda ka instead of zamperla? the tt2 issue was because of zamperla's inexperience, not because refurbing a strata is impossible.
    - another thing to note is that likely zumanjaro would go too!
    doesn't it just make more sense to make use of the parts of ka ALREADY there which AREN'T problematic, i.e. trackwork and supports, and build upon that? instead of demolishing a whole 400ft tall coaster to build a brand new 400ft coaster and throwing out the worlds tallest drop tower along the way?
    this isn't a disagreement with you, sarah and taylor, it's a disagreement with the philosophy of the new merged six flags company, if this all turns out to be true after all, which i don't doubt, but strongly hope isn't. they'd be making a disservice to their legacy as an amusement park chain, dare i say, by tearing down ka and zumanjaro. i REALLY hope they just refurb it
    and ofc, if they just take it down without a worthy replacement, i think that's gonna leave gigantic gap in this park's ride lineup, for locals and tourists that were used to / expecting a 400ft coaster, and i don't think that will bode well for their numbers.

    Let’s say they get a coaster that’s better then Ka. Is it really pushing the lineup that much forward? Also you would be losing zumanjaro which is one of if not the best drop tower out there and it duels with Ka. That is a massive loss and any drop tower they get after will feel less than. You could also be losing green lantern which I know most people don’t like but I think it’s a solid ride. I just don’t see this as a net positive. However the only good thing is that this doesn’t really change how much longer it would take for great adventure to get a new coaster because they’re already getting flash the year before. That would be for their next coaster that wouldn’t replace a already existing coaster.

    IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER: "TOP THRILL DRAGSTER" WAS ANNOUNCED SIMPLY AS "CLOSING" BEFORE IT WAS ANNOUNCED AS BEING CONVERTED. So all _closure_ means is "fate pending"
    Another important thing to consider is the incident that caused Top Thrill Dragster to close in the first place. Cedar Fair undoubtedly want to make sure Kingda Ka doesn't have a similar incident on their watch now that it's their problem, and the ride would have to close at least temporarily for them to be able to make a full assessment of its condition.
    A connection you could have done with making more explicitly: The massive teething troubles with Top Thrill 2, and the extent to which Kingda Ka's closure/removal is being muttered about.
    A conversion might still be on the cards, but that's undountedly contingent on how much more grief they have with TT2 before it's running smoothly.

    If they replace it with a GIGA it should try to be the most thrilling GIGA yet but still great for GP. Should go after Steve's airtime record, but with mostly floater, have some near inverting floating wave turns, a reasonable outterbank with light ejector, maybe an inversion like a low to the ground 90mph Mosasoras Roll or whippy zero-G roll like on Flight Deck or the world's longest floating stall. So many ways a GIGA could be way better than any of the big coasters out there, including Falcon's Flight.

    Here’s something else to consider; these 100+ mph launch coasters that were the byproduct of the coaster wars are becoming extinct. Top Thrill Dragster and Do-Dodonpa have gone, Formula Rossa is likely getting a less intense launch, and now this. And with the hydraulic launch in general becoming increasingly rare, combined with Falcon’s Flight inching towards completion and the eventual shattering of Ka’s big record, and there is a LOT of reason to speculate that this ride might be gone soon. The amusement industry is not what it was in 2005, and with record-breaking new rides becoming less and less frequent, I’m actually on the side that these rumors are more likely than not true, if not this year, then definitely next year. I pray that I’m wrong, but it just makes too much sense

Who is the one saying this, where are the rumors coming from. Everyone that is covering this rumor should list credible sources. It's getting annoying when all everyone that is covering this is saying essentially "we've heard from behind the scenes." Cite sources. Credible ones. Kingda Ka was the rollercoaster that got me to start caring about coasters back when I was around 11. It was always the bucket list ride, the world record holder. It was my favorite for years, all the way until I went on it in 2019. It was raining the day I went, so it had closed for a while because of weather, and I remember the guy at the control panel basically told me and my brother to not waste our time in the station and go on other rides because it would be a while. Eventually, we came back when it was open, and there was something so surreal about fulfilling a childhood dream (granted I was 13, but still).
    In my mind, Ka is the definitive rollercoaster. It has a vibe that is unparalleled, and while it's world record won't be around for much longer, there's something special for a park to say that they had the former world record holder, and the current continental record holder. As Akio Toyoda said about the Lexus LFA, it was a halo car that was valuable for the rest of the company (by showing "hey, we can make this really cool car!" it makes people think higher of your normal production models), even if it didn't sell well. It may be expensive to operate, but when people think of Six Flags Great Adventure, they think "Oh, that's the park with Kingda Ka!" Removing it would be a truly terrible decision. Even if they close it disassembling it should be a crime. Them coming out and saying that they just can't afford it and it could kill the whole park could limit the reputational damage, but in that case, they should leave the physical coaster there as a monument to the past and to the history of the park (and leave the potential for reopening if they could figure out a way to make it more reliable).

    I don't really buy maintenance costs for a possible closure. Those costs are much lower than the capital costs of a new major ride and they likely haven't changed much over time, meaning why now? There is a high likely hood of this being an internet rumor getting passed around. The ride probably has a useful life of 5-10 more years. I see no reason for them to be in a rush to get rid of a paid-off major attraction. It would be smart of them to let the TT2 situation get played out before deciding the fate of this coaster.
    Keep'r going!

    I still think that the plan was to potentially give it a similar treatment as TT2 but also extend the layout into the green lantern plot. They could have closed Green Lantern and removed it in the off season will opening up Ka to start the season then close it for the refresh mid summer and have it ready for the following season. But the issues with TT2 have ether canceled or put that idea on hold. While they make that final decision I feel KingDa Ka will go to a SBNO until the decision is made.

One of the main sponsors of the competition supplies numerous hydraulic parts for the launches. They stated if Intamin had just had a hydraulic company design the launch and components it would be much more reliable. They are also sad to see the industry move away from this fluid science to just use electricity (LSM) for launches. I have always wondered how rides like Stormrunner, Stealth, and other hydraulic launches don't seem to have nearly as many problems.

    What I don’t understand is how falcons flight is supposed to work with LSMs but they can’t retrofit them to this? Is there not enough track for the LSMs to pick up enough speed to get over the top hat? With TT2 the only real issue is the trains, and if they bought intamins trains that they plan on using for falcons flight for both of the strata coasters, wouldn’t that solve the issue? I understand that would be expensive but building a whole new coaster would be too. Idk I’m probably wrong but the whole thing just doesn’t fully add up in my head.

    I am going to throw another option to the table: the air-compressed launch from S&S. Yes, they need a little bit of research, cause nowadays the fastest launch is 133km/h, but Do--Dodonpa reached 180km/h so it could be possible...
    The thing is: If you remove KdK, you have to immediately place another massive thing to fill the empty space, and that is going to cost way much than refurbishing the coaster itself. They have options, so first option may be this.
    For the Green Lanter thing, we do not have to forget that this coaster was at Kentucky and moved here, so is way older than you think. However, B&M could potentially study if those surfing trains fit the ride propperly. Three new trains is not that expensive, if you are thinking on removing the coaster and building a new one. This is the only way this coaster may be safed. If not, just trash it.

I think they should try and preserve Ka as much as possible. It’s a global draw and from a business standpoint that makes it very profitable. They also now have all of the donor parts from dragster. I’m hoping that it does close but just to make the coaster much more reliable and cost efficient. Adding lsms while keeping the height could work since most of the public wouldn’t notice. With it being 400+ ft tall, and Zumanjaro on the structure, and the fact on how iconic the ride is, I think its staying in some way or form. Either a spike, or extended layout will be added, and the launch is of course replaced with lsms. I don't see any other option. Since the trains were refurbished recently I usually would assume that it would be sticking around for another few good years, but when you have people like El Toro Ryan being uncertain, its definitely concerning.

    The level of panic around these rumors of the 'removal' of Kingda Ka is HILARIOUS! Remember all the panic surrounding the 'removal' of Top Thrill Dragster? A LOT of money was spent adding the spike to TT2 so they're not just going to scrap it. I'm sure they've figured out what the issues are and working on a fix so now they're just trying to get a jump on adding a spike to Kingda Ka too. Part of Green Lantern sits right in the pathway of the new spike so that's why it's probably being sent to a smaller park. Losing Zumanjaro too would actually mean three rides are getting removed and I don't see that happening. The only worthy replacement would be an announcement that "The World's First T-Rex is coming to Great Adventure!" LOL Relax everyone, I know these speculation videos generate a lot of views, but in a few months we'll see construction videos of the footers for the new spike going into place! They blatantly skip over King's Island's vortex hole despite many enthusiasts consider the best park in the cf chain.
    I've long thought that cedar point thinks of themselves as the gods of Sandusky since there's nothing else there except a horse. They'll continue to short other parks in favor of themselves.

    Kingda Ka will just be re-imagined like TT2. I'm actually going to assume that Kingda Ka will have exactly what is being done to TT2 done to it as well. Once you spend the money on perfectly TT2 why would not just do the same to Kingda Ka. It would be the cheapest option of renewing it and bringing more guests to the park. Scrapping it, simply makes no sense and doesn't follow the Cedar Fair typical thing they do. I'm sorry but I simply disagree with this.
