That’s why I miss the good old days! Vehicles were so easy to work on and could always tell when the fuel pump was going out being they were mechanical. No computers or all this electric crap one has to worry about going out. Open the hood and all motor and a few wires.

  • @kylederry5031

Believe it or not but the ring gear separating from the flywheel is a pretty common CAT issue. Personally I've never experienced it on a 3406, but tons of times on the 3126 in Shaker FL 80's. We would stock them just in case. If it was mine I would just weld the sucker back on and replace the whole flywheel next clutch replacement. But ultimately up to you man, your rig your rules.

At least you were at home when Orwell broke down. That Coronado sure is quiet. See how the 680 does. Yup you got a lot done fore sure. Once you get back and fix Orwell slow down some. One man can only carry so much weight on his shoulders. Your taking the breakdown really well. No use getting upset, it changes nothing and gives you I’ll feelings. Your one hell of a guy FSC. Not many could have done what you did, have a breakdown, changed tractors then change tractors again and this trip has yet to really start, your still in your yard. Many would have walked away. Well it will work out in the end, I know you will see to that. Have a great and a safe day. Happy trails and happy motoring…

The timing could have been a lot worse, he could have broken down while you're dropping the load, then you'd have the trip back, the trip back out with the company truck, then the trip back to the shop, and that wouldn't have been cheap, then the cost to rebuild Orwell, and yes I'm a glass half full type of guy, keep your chin up big guy, things can always be worse. Keep up the great content, Greetings from the UK 🇬🇧

Well to be honest, Orwell did you a favor by breaking down in the shop. Saved you a lot of money at home verses on the road. Because we know how the shops are on the road are. And to answer your questions about buying and storing parts for Orwell, well that's a no brainer. If you break something on a Friday night and you have parts, well that's a win. And if you buy parts now and the price goes thru the roof, you just Saved even more money. Also some parts will interchange between the 3406a and others I just don't know which ones. A d having parts for both engines could be a blessing later. So good luck no matter what way you go. Also be kind to the k whopper. You don't need three trucks in one week. People will talk!

If you want cruise control in orwell I can help you out with that. I have added cruise control to many mechanical engine diesel trucks and I can usually do it for under $100. I can send you a parts list and draw up wiring diagrams and the entire install should take you about 2-3 hours.

At least Orwell broke down at home not out in the middle of BFE. Those freightliners with the DD engines in them are nothing but a piece of junk. I like the way they look and the interior and everything but only way I'd ever owned one is if it was a glider. Stay safe out there Steve.

I feel real bad aha, this load starts with Orwell, Orwell breaks down with flywheel issues, Company truck takes over from Orwell to get the load delivered, company truck breaks down with possible engine sensor issues, and finally second company truck takes over from first company truck that took over from Orwell, to get the load delivered, man what a day.😆Still was cool to see the Kenworth again, and another truck we haven't seen on the channel before, though you still can't beat Orwell she just sounds and looks so much better in my eyes. 👌👍

I feel your frustration, Steve. I have to drop a new ac compressor in my personal truck in the morning and I've been having AC issues all summer long and our summer has been one of the consistent hottest over 100 so until it's doing polar vortex, I'm not going to risk it even though it's been frustrating and I'm hoping after all this money I've had to drop to see a result at the end of the tunnel which ends the problem and I hope the same for you too because it's never fun when something you can't see rears its ugly head in your face like a virus.

Hi Steve and I would completely agree with you about electronic faults on modern vehicles. Trucks in England are now mainly ( I believe) automatics? . If the brains in the computer say ,s no you go into what is known as limp mode . Reduced power . Many years ago my father's cousins ran a haulage business and they also ran older cab over trucks. Same reason as you no electronics to malfunction !! Just a mechanic to fix the problems. Most UK trucks are European cabovers . Volvo ,mercedes are very popular. I admire the fact that you are dare I say a brave man ? To operate a near 40 year old vehicle on probably the hardest transport job there is low loader trailer work !!!

Break downs happen, Orwell will be back on the road. You just don’t have the time.
The Ford isn’t something that needs to be done in a hurry, since you’ve got Orwell.
If its about growing the channel, I think just doing some upgrades to Orwell and it would of done the same. I follow truck channels and those that do really well, comes down to the trucks looking nice. Chrome, great sounding, Jakes barking. Just don’t over work yourself Steve!
The De-Rating doesn’t happen a lot. Usually it does it and it’s done. But better safe than sorry. The way they clean the exhaust it’s dirty so it gets really hot yo burn out the soot. Great choice to take the 660 or whatever model that was.

    Hi Steve
Orwell is more reliable than the new truck's and Orwell is only a little sick, that Freightliner takes a dicky fit (new age man flu) every time it gets to do any work. Plus a derated engine does more damage to the engine than if there was a physical problem with the engine, even engine's that are speed limited have more damage than a engine that is not speed limited.
You will have Orwell back on his feet showing the newbies how to do it.

Your lucky Orwell is in ur shop and not broken down 500+ miles away. That's a bummer having to use another company truck. I bet that truck was supposed to be near the garage of the company instead of being handed to u. Hopefully everything goes smoothly I'm the KW. Freightliner hell don't have any good pulling compacity pulling power. Allot of the trucks we own are Peterbilts and KW'S. We test drive new semi's for the dealerships and allot of times they don't do great at pulling. Thsts why I like the older ones better no high tech computer stuff.

Did you check the blinker fluid? it's an known issue with that model, and braking down in the shop is better then out on the road.

You should not have to buy a new fly wheel .You just buy a new ring gear .They only need to be heated a bit and they expand, you drop them on the fly wheel give them a couple of taps to seat them and they shrink on tight.

That’s sounds like more more work and trouble then it’s worth.

No trouble easy as I have been doing it for years. Any competent mechanic can do it.The morons they have in spare parts dept these days will try to sell you a whole fly wheel because they want to sell you more.

Hey Steve! Is it possible to park Orwell in front of the Coronado for length comparison?! the Coronado looks very long and you always mention, that you love Cabovers because they are kinda short and therefor easier to handle in narrow streets and in turns.

I love the cabovers but the freightliners and peterbilts are way nicer. Theres more room to move built in firdges and the bunks are really comfortable. Air conditioner and tv's for when your down for 10 hours.
