A quick addition to #2 (from a helpful redditor): In addition to needing to use a Djinni of the element the enemy is weak to, there's another requirement that is only occasionally relevant - the attacker's elemental power (ePower) must be higher than the enemy's elemental resistance (eResist). If it's significantly higher, you're guaranteed to get a rainbow kill, but if you're only slightly higher, there's an element of RNG and you'll only sometimes proc it. I don't happen to know the exact formula, though... maybe someone like Plexa has that info. Most of the time this doesn't come into play, since most enemies have very low eResist in their weakness, and characters usually have fairly high ePower in whatever element they possess Djinn of (since Djinn contribute to ePower). But now and then it can make a difference. Mind. Blown.
Getting all of the best items in the first game isn’t super necessary for a code transfer to The Lost Age but seriously get all of the Djinn before beating it.
That’s definitely worth mentioning, but I would even go so far as to say it’s not something you should do for a first time playthrough, mostly because they’re needed for the super bosses, but not overall story, ya know?
@@chocoboseI hear ya, i guess I’m more encouraging new players to explore towns/dungeons that they visited previously and saw something that they couldn’t access initially.
The 28 Dijinni transfer is a must equipment not so much in fact by the time the Golden sun 1 party joins in lost age All of their weapons/armors will have WEAKER stats then even the BUYABLE Lost age weapons/armors.
No music encapsulates the Golden Sun Series and my childhood better than Elemental stars and Kolima Forest theme. I'm still listening to them now and then after 20+ years.
I would give this tip - about backtracking: you totally should. For example, after visiting Tolbi and getting the Cloak Psynergy you MUST backtrack through a cave southeast of the Karagol Sea to visit Lunpa. This is a sidestory easily missed the first time you play, as some of the Djinn from the worldmap.
Yeah, backtracking is definitely a thing in these games. I always try to convince new players to just do what they can first, and then explore the side quests :) that way they don’t just burn out when things might get harder. But a good tip regardless!!
#3 I'd add that not only do the NPCs have a lot of things to say/think about the world they live in, but the dialogues of entire villages will change to new ones after crucial plot points (usually ones directly related to the town or important people from the town). For example, the whole town of Vault has certain lines on your first visit, then new lines after defeating the bandits, then some of the town has new lines after Ivan joins you, and then the whole town has new lines again when you return across the repaired bridge to the south. I've probably played the game 20 times over the past 23 years and I am still discovering new bits of lore in my current playthrough today!
Back in OG GBA days, I got into golden sun by finding a copy if the game cartridge in the middle of the street where i was riding my bike, with the label 3/4 ripped off. So not knowing what it was other then a GBA game so I popped it in and was forever hooked on JRPG!!!!
Im replaying this game again after so many years and the memories of playing this game back when I was kid are all coming back to me....here is a tip explore every single part of the map and towns and back track is a must to be able to get all the Djinn
#6 very small tip, but by putting fragile characters (aka Ivan with vanilla classes) to the side of the party, they're less likely to be the central target of incoming multi-target psynergy, therefore taking slightly less damage every now and then.
@@chocoboseTBF there's still gonna be enemies targeting the side of the party deliberately if they want to target low resistances or something, so to be more precise, the best idea would be to put the... most easy target to the side? I remember seeing this game in Electronic Gaming Monthly back in the day and it showed off what the Gameboy Advance would look like. I never played it until it dropped on Switch and it’s one of my favorite JRPG’s.
One more tip: *Your mana pool refreshes gradually while walking* Because psynergy can be needed for puzzle solving, the devs added a feature where your Psynergy Points (PP) refreshes slowly as you walk around. Granted, its not much but at least you have some leeway in using spells or swords throughout the dungeon. And i love how certain weapons have a unique proc animation
If they would just remaster GoldenSun 1&2 I´m pretty sure younger generations would fall in love with this game, just like I did back in the day. Unfortunately the graphics (while great in 2002) don´t hold up with todays standards, which shys away younger people from giving it a try in the first place. The story, the music, the atmosphere, the immersion, the gameplay (combat system, etc)... This game has so much potential!

What an amazing vid! Well done, mate! I have been playing Golden Sun and The Lost Age since their release. I would love to do a system link PvP battle again! Those were the days!
I only ever was able to do them against myself 😂 no one I knew had even heard of Golden Sun until I got on Reddit and then suddenly there were dozens of us!
I was about 20 hours into Star Ocean on Switch right before Golden Sun dropped and I was so burnt out I needed the change of pace. I just thought it was funny that you started the video off with Star Ocean. :)
#1 I'd add to the first point that you can often guess the elements of creatures correctly before starting to throw any elemental damage at them (at least after playing the games for a while). Though note there are anomalies, since monsters can also just have completely unique sets of elemental resistances. But generally, similar to your own adepts, monsters tend to be associated with one of the four elements. Aquatic creatures for example will tend to be Water/Mercury creatures, Airborne creatures like birds gargoyles etc. will tend to be Wind/Jupiter creatures, creatures that would be found in warmer climates or spew fire (salamanders, dragons etc.) will tend to be Fire/Mars creatures, and creatures like moles, apes, golems etc. tend to be Earth/Venus creatures. Generally, the rule is that a creature of a specific element will resist that element (a Jupiter creature or a Jupiter adept, will naturally have high Jupiter resistance), while being weak to the "opposing" element. Earth/VenusWind/Jupiter Fire/MarsWater/Mercury So for example if you come across a golem and a gargoyle, they're probably an earth and wind user respectively, so they resist those elements respectively while being weak to the other one, hence you'd want to use wind on the earth golem and earth on the wind gargoyle etc.
You’re absolutely right! Some are definitely more obvious, but then (of course) there are some others that don’t really align to that. Like the Mushroom enemies being weak to Fire but not neccisarily being Water-aligned.
Great video. Would love to see a battle system run down with some tips and tricks. Guide on how you should approach combat perhaps? Like when you should physically attack, use psynergy, or use djinni. I personally found most battle psynergy to be underwhelming and stuck to stacking effects with djinn into summoning and setting most djinn to standby to summon while running thru random encounters.
That’s an interesting topic for sure! I’ll try to dig into that in my larger Golden Sun review/video, but from my experience, it’s almost entirely up to user preference 😁 I know that’s not the “best” answer, but I think it really boils down to “do you want to AoE or use your elemental boosts” vs “haha Megiddo go brrrrrrrr!”
WOW! You mentioned the elemental weakness and rainbow kills! This is really deep knowledge of the game! I figured this out back in 2001 on my own, when the Internet was not very developed. I felt like a genius xDDD
To be honest you probably were back then! It took me until maybe 2013 to figure out about the punctuation. Rainbow kills were also something that felt like an accident every time 😂
The little text differences for hit effectiveness is actually good to know. Every time I’ve tried this game the battle system just confused me or I just lost interest part way through. Hoping to give a proper go this time
I had no idea the rainbow deaths were element related! I thought it was rng and had no effect other than fun animation haha. I remember trying to grind for certain weapons but losing patience, hopefully that helps a bit more my next playthrough!
