When I've listened to Odd Elegy for the first time and it came to the piano, I thought "Wait, that sounds vaguely familiar", and then I found out it was Tigran playing and it all made sense.
Some random thoughts: a.) this channel is pure gold b.) I'm getting to know a lot of awesome bands/musicians I hadn't the slightest idea c.) I play guitar since I was fourteen and even though I can fairly play even and odds time sigs I come to conclusion I know absolutely nothing; you drum guys are sick (and amazing)
Never expected to see Odd elegy on this channel! This is the song that introduced me to Tigrans music since he plays on the live version. Loved the vid!
Great video! Love how Snarky Puppy creates such funky grooves that are so rhythmically complex but still so easy to bop your head to! And Odd Elegy is such a great song, I had been listening to it for a year before realizing that Tigran Hamasyan plays the piano in it! Or at least in the live version on RUclips. Again you keep delivering such incredible content, your way of explaining rhythmic complexities are out of this world! And as I've said before, it's really great to see you show it practically by playing!
One important aspect, at least with Dhafer's music, is the use of space, timbr & atmosphere, and overall modal context. There's a tendency with musicians that work with such complex rhythmic structures to cram everything in: oh, we've got this 29/32 meter filled with diminshed augmented suspended 7th locrian juju. No. Rather than that Dhafer focuses on melody, on timbre + really working in thath fusion of jazz and the ethnic elements of his music. He is creating a sound world that happens to have some very interesting rhythmic particularities and knows how to balance said complex elements with space and room to breathe. The guy who said ”you also have to play (/groove/feel/etc.) the rests” really had it figured out! Cheers!
Amazing! Your analysis makes that apparent simplicity even more exciting. In the explanation of Tigran's solo I could not contain a laugh to express that taste ... Thank you
hi Yogev, your rhythm analysis is awesome. i always want to develop such a good sense of rhythm and get better at counting complex changes in time signatures in pieces. it always baffles me how can such complex composite times could be heard and understood without explainations from the composers themselves. I always love and look forward to your videos. I hope you can do a video on this topic in the near future, just explain how you “hear” and breakdown such complex rhythm. Thanks for your deep understanding and your willingness to share to the community.
Odd Elegy was the first time I knowingly heard a composite time signature, and I've been fascinated by both the piece and the concept ever since! Cool to see it being analysed by you! Edit: That run at 6:58 was so effortless what
Override is an amazing tool in oddtime meters. Gavin Harrison has amazing rhythms with it, like dotted 8 override. Please, make an episode about override!
Umm, did Yogev just casually chop the same pulse into 1, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 beat intervals perfectly like it was no biggie? And then talk about how great the other musicians are? What a total badass.
i really wish for this channel to become popular, glad i discovered you way back on the first Tigran beatbox video so i can brag a little in the future
The reason why Fm feels like the start is because the key signature for that part is Fm, but the progression starts on C major which is the dominant wanting to resolve to Fm. When that resolve happens, it feels like we're back home (because harmonically, we are) even though it's not the first chord in the progression.
@@YogevGabay Yes, and that original melody tonality is C Phrygian Dominant, one of the modes derived from F harmonic minor (which the Fm chord progression is based on) so the parts are closely related.
Awesome video! Pls do "happy with what you have to be happy with" by King Crimson (Adrian belew guitar play some weird pattern in the chorus) or "level five" also by King Crimson, around the 3.00 fripp plays a weird pattern. Greets!
Great stuff, as always! Väsen is pronounced Vaes'n... If you want to go down the dark and winding rabbit hole of Scandinavian rhythmic goodness then check out, for instance, the band "Eriksson Nygårds Tallroth" and their album "Klacklek". Have fun :)
Recently came across your videos, really interesting stuff. Then I saw your cover of Venetian Snares and was pretty much blown away. Serious talent dude! Would love to see you deconstruct some stuff by the band 'Strobes', I feel like they'd be right up your street.
Shapons Vindaloo is also on the Väsen album Whirled / Världens Väsen. Since I'm new to Snarky Puppy, I was surprised to immediately recognize the song. The Väsen version is on youtube here: ruclips.net/video/YQV6r1BBXts/видео.html Great band, but not well known in the US.
BTW, traditional Finnish music is rhythmically odd, matching the language's tendency to use changes in duration rather than changes in volume to stress syllables. No idea if it's odd in a way that's of any particular musical interest, but my ear enjoys it. (Väsen's Swedish; neighbors but linguistically very different.)
This is one of the best music channels right now
Ohhhh thanks !
Totally!
Agree!
Coincidence? ... Absolutely
That had me in tears 😂
anyone else’s brain melt at 11:37?? this dude is incredible

I have the EXACT same experience, including playing guitar since I was 14. Wtf
hahhahahahaha thanks !
The Odd Elegy live version is so awesome! The Tigran solo is mindblowing, sounds very natural (if you don't try to count :-) )
One of my favourite channels from one of my favourite metal bands. Distorted Harmony.! Love it...
This is the greatest music simplification of All Time
Yogev has this magnificent talent to simplify complex stuff. {plus he is a great drummer}
Holy. That example of shifting gravity was so well done. Most tasteful example of this up till now.
Never expected to see Odd elegy on this channel! This is the song that introduced me to Tigrans music since he plays on the live version. Loved the vid!
The intro: didn't get those were two compositions superimposed. Sounded fine.
The playing at 5:30 is phenomenal. Geez
Just found your channel about a month ago, but everything I’ve seen so far has been pure gold!
DAAAAAAMN!!! How can you think and play all that stuff. GENIUS, its freakin' amazing what you do

Compound meters are quite common in balkan music too, SP piece, a Väsen original, sounds almost Aksak style variation. Great deconstruction.
6:30 DANG! that makes everything feel different. Wow

Yup agreed!
Amazing choice of songs. Thanks!!
Superstuff :))) Thanx for this great exemples!!!
Everything you do is amazing! Thank you! Request: I would love to hear you explain the end of "The Sky is Red" by Leprous!
i was having difficulty understanding Odd elegy 39/16s cycle. Thank you Yogev. Great channel
Happy to help!
I'm so happy that I discovered this channel. Great stuff!!!

Yo! So, there's no secret here. I honestly think it's just practice practice practice.
It get's easier !
Great analysis !
6:27 is tasty bro haha! Love these vids, keep em coming!

I really love your drums centered perspective of music theory. Keep them coming!
that intro was genius
Just saw Dhaffer post this on his Facebook page, I really dig into his music
Also, I just always enjoy your break downs of song structures
Cheers ☺️
Ohhhh really ?!
Killer analysis.
So glad you like Dhafer Youssef. That tune is a banger. Some Avishai Cohen (the bassist, not the trumpeter) would be a good fit for your channel too.
I love Avishai!
I did this song a while back, but will probably do some more.

Beautiful video.... Congrats
Dude how awesome are you
DHAFER YOUSSEF!!! LETS GOOOOO
i really wish for this channel to become popular, glad i discovered you way back on the first Tigran beatbox video so i can brag a little in the future
Nyckelharpa = Key fiddle, a traditional Swedish folk music instrument.
Isnt harpan allso the same as harp? Like the the instrument the angels play?
Great video; and I don’t even have to finish it to know that.
Awesome !
Great video, subscribed!

12 tone taught me that ;)
And then when the melody comes back on C they switch back?

@@MrGul Epic! man I really need to learn my harmony. I'm so bad at it

for the next “time-consuming” episode I suggest Tetrahedron by Michael Manring 🎸
So awesome
I would love to see you explain 'A Cell Divides' by Haken
Great video!! Please can you explain Seven Seas from Avishai Cohen? It would be amazing :D

I'm working on one actually muhahahaha but for now, enjoy these!
Best channel!
Please do “In the Stereo” by Ossicles! I can’t count that for myself for some reason, and I think everyone here will love that!
This guy should REALLY analyse some Shpongle music
Loved it!
So did you get that teleprompter? 😆 Great video my friend!
DIDN'T ARRIVE YET hahahahaa
Still burning through takes trying to say words.
Why are words hard. WHYY

Video Title - "Making Complicated Music Sound Easy"
Video Content - Juggles asymmetrical subdivisions across odd meters better than a machine
hahhahhahah
Wow, I've never seen you playing drums! Would like to see that more often
check out old videos
hahahah totally
Do you do videos about afro-latin rhythems too? you do great videos!

I don´t understand shit, buy I still love the content
Kaz Rodriguez's Rain has an interesting composite: 6 5 5 4 5 = 25
Where's the ads? Come one you deserve it.
You shoud collab with Adam Neely man
after the last videos, i don't hear numbers anymore, i just hear short-short-long short-short-long long-long-long :D
So like 19.5????????
"non-repetitive" but it's literally consistent repetition lol

väsen |'vɛ:seɳ| --- nyckelharpa |nʏkʰel'harpʰa|. You are welcome
hahahaha thanks !
so i don't know jack shit about music...what are we counting? the sax or the drum beat?
Pulse! It counts for all instruments
Nowadays it's rather the other way around, simple music is made to sound complex.
