Nov. 5 2017 . i just used mine for the first time last friday . worked great . i set up between two trees , i don't have hiking poles . i did make a set of poles for it , they didn't work well , but still totally happy with the tent and the first run use . i do wish it had a side entry like others i have seen like the one from DD Hammocks . pair this with the right tarp and you have a very versatile and light shelter .

Great "first impressions" review Devin, I have the Kelty Grand Mesa and one of the best features on these small 2-man tents is the door on the end. Openings on the long side are awkward for 2 people (ie. climbing over for late night bathroom breaks). Great porch mode and awesome ending with the pooch making your daughter giggle. Thumbs up brother!

It would be perfect if the door is on the side. The tarp can be customised to go low or porch mode at the door side. We can put footprint which got longer side at the door side too.

Backcountry Exposure The SMD would be a good get. I've known others who've said good things about it. My TT Notch finally shipped today, and I'm stoked to get it in hand. I don't anticipate bugs to be as bad when we're up there, but rain will definitely be probable at some point in the afternoons. I may well consider taking my fly only.
I've considered taking a tarp and ground sheet only and a bug head net if the bugs are bad. I'd love to see your tarp tent when you get it. What model did you get?

i love this style tent..but at 45 ounces is almost 3 lbs.(the tarptent cloudburst 3 person weighs the same) the price is right..the weight is a little high for this style tent as the market for these is usually UL backpackers and people more comfortable with a tarp and net tent who are cutting weight.. although if you werent sure if you like this style for the price its worth trying it before buying a cuben fiber version from MLD or something at 400$+.. a DIY version of this in cuben is still almost $300. but is less than 14 ounces.. MSR sells their version of this and its around 2 1/2 lbs i think..they use 20D this is 30D.. but MSR also costs $350-400$ for the net tent and tarp...lmao
Yeah I do agree with everything you've written. The idea here being that someone can get into a shelter of this type for $140-$150 and have a nice versatile shelter without breaking the bank. I look at the price of cuben and just cringe. Also, I believe that not everyone that is out backpacking is a gram counter and they don't worry about the difference between 3 pounds and 4 pounds. But I do agree with everything you said, as I am someone that focuses on saving weight.
i forgot to mention i also made one in membrane pu4000 before going to cuben fiber.. the cost was around 100$ to make everything maybe a little less..and it weighs in the area of 19 ounces for net tent and tarp. but that is using a 10D silpoly fabric. most mass production companies wouldn't use such a light version of silpoly nylon..but MSR does and wants to charge 400$ for it in 20d.(i think the label costs 150$ lol) and double the weight of what it is in membrane for 1/4 cost if you can do some basic sewing(a skill i think is very easy but nobody does hardly anymore especially guys). but my thing is if your gonna buy something that is 3# might as well get a tent..lol the niche for a cheap heavy tarp net tent set is very small. the niche for an UL net tent tarp set up is higher. sorta like carrying a 4 lb goretex bivy.it kinda defeats the purpose of the item which is to be lighter than a tent .. i think this is a great practice tent for someone who wants to get into tarp camping but not wanting to spend a bunch..small niche..but a niche non the less. be good for scouts and scout troops to teach kids how to tarp camp and set tarps up and rigging etc. good for two if they split the weight it wouldnt be that bad , and being in 30D makes it durable. MSRs new winter UL tents are made of 30D. so it will withstand a lot more abuse than any of my homemade tents for sure. and even be more durable than a $400 name brand set up.
Great video! I also have this and tested it out a few weeks ago on an overnight backpacking trip. I need to figure out the best way to set it that doesn't take an hour and will keep me dry. I use it in the rain and it kept me pretty dry. Great video man.

Backcountry Exposure this will be the shelter I use when I do the Four Pass Loop in July. I'm pretty excited about it. Paria Outdoors has really impressed me with their products. I've used the 15 degree down bag many times and it's worked fantastic and I've used the sactuary tarp over a dozen times and it's worked great as well.

weight is high for tarp and most tent, 44 oz. Just not sure when I would use it in Utah. would have loved it when I lived in Missouri. May is getting big. she will do Big Baldy this summer.

Man I really like that tent. Have been looking for something that my wife and I can both fit in when we can't hang hammocks and that weighs about the same. Its priced really well too. Would two sleeping bags fit comfortably?
Jason Wish I would say that it's going to be tight shoulder to shoulder, but roomy enough to sleep without being on top of each other. Downside with two people is the side walls in the A frame.
4 years later, what are your thoughts on the mesh tent now? I'm thinking about the MSR "Thru-Hiker Mesh House 2" for the weight (14 ounces), and will use my DCF tarp with doors (12 ounces). Love the porch mode! THere are so many options with this set up!
You need to think before you set up gear. It doesnt matter if the tent was 10 bucks, its called taking care of your gear. You need a ground sheet amd not one of those tent ground sheets that are the same cheap material get a vinyl tarp. Or you tent is going to have a hole in it very soon.

I had the thru hiker, until and animal tore through it. I would have much rather had spent sixty bucks on it rather than 300. These pariah breeze tents can be found on amazon for sixty bucks.
I'm looking for a shelter to use for get-home bags. Overhead tarps are not a problem for me... I have options. The big thing is to keep the skeeters out. How do you feel this would fair vs. the Hikingworld similar product? (The MSR product is way out of my budget, btw). On the fence... convince me of this product please. Thanks.
Th hiking world tent has an odd door in my opinion. It seems a little strange to have a door on the side of the tent with an A frame. I imagine better build quality from Paria Outdoor. I think you'd be really happy with the breeze tent.
Is there a trick to doing the poles for this? I can't seem to get the tension right between making the tent stay up and a tarp for a rain fly stay as well
For me it was having the poles high enough that the guy lines would pull up on the tent. It's hard for me to really know the best solution without some photos. Feel free to email me if you need.
Stake two corners of the same side first, then put a trekking pole up on the opposing end. Use mini line loc tensioners or a tautline hitch knot for the pole guy lines. Once the first pole is up, stake the remaining corners. Then put the 2nd trekking pole up and tension it. Then remove any slack and increase tension by raising the trekking poles and tensioning line locs little by little. -- you're done! Do the same thing for a tarp - except put the tarp up first and then position the tent under it separately and secure the tent Ridgeline to the tarp Ridgeline. One trick: to not have to carry so many stakes -- when used with a tarp, instead of staking the mesh tent, just use guy lines on the corners and attach them to the same stakes your tarp is secured by. Using this method I get by with two long end guy lines and 8 stakes total.

Excellent for the summer! You can make poles out of branches. This is a perfect set up for my state.
You could do a ridgeline for the tarp and add two long prussic knots to pull the tent taught.

It's a nice option for $60, but if price is not an issue it's a pretty heavy mesh tent.
Im sure your able to use a ridgeline by using 2 trees rather then hiking poles?
Or in many areas just find two sticks on the ground to use or break dead branches off trees which I have done in snow camping.

Good and cheap alternative to the msr thruhiker mesh house 2. Very unfortunately, no shipping outside the US and no retailers in europe.

Sounds about right. I have a similar mesh tent from 3F UL that weighs 650 grams without hardware.
