Royal rainbow--- wait, wrong game.
Honestly, what a theme. And what an outfit! I love the buildup before the theme breaks down again, although ZUN described it like wailing... dark.
I wish I had better music knowledge so I didn't just describe everything as "this bit", and "the part that goes like this". Then perhaps I could form some coherant thoughts about the music!
I guess all you need to know is, it's really good. Plus, you know I love the choir sample....

I really like how there's a lot of climactic sort of stingers littered around Chimata's boss theme. It's as if it's trying to convey how Chimata herself is starting to wither away, but simply refuses to disappear for good. Even the music's conveying that, it feels like at some points it's going to end prematurely, but it keeps trucking along. It's great, I love it. Really does feel like she's trying her best to stay alive.
Agreed! Its a very unique and interesting track

Wasn't this an actual theory, that UM's plot was a direct response to Covid-19 and quarantine? Or am i mistaken about why Comiket was cancelled
@@GarryDumblowski Yes. Chimata's power was weakened when quarantine started because of the great decrease of physical market along with the growth of online shopping.
I almost misread "comiket" as "mikomet/micomet", you know what I mean 😅
Touhou 18: Local miko closes struggling flea market
A theme that’s constantly building up but stopping and starting, like it’s desperately trying to carry the classic touhou final boss energy.
Really represents our marketplace god clinging to the little faith she has left.
But thanks to the Unconnected Marketeers that were trading cards, she’s got her faith back,
and she’s not letting go this time.
it feels like a stock market trying to get the prices climb up but it keeps crashing down and desperately increase its value
Probably the character that i like the most for her backstory. Really like the idea of a god clinging to life (faith).
I would replace Kanako for Chitma as my god anything
i like your pfp
Chimata is a very tragic story indeed. She is not fighting to wipe out the impure or drive out beasts, she is fighting for her own survival as the ever-changing world is geared against her existence. Her theme, alongside the theme of a bustling marketplace, also has a hint of desperation, especially for the intro. She's my 3rd favourite of the game, tied with Momoyo, but in all honesty, I can't rank the characters. I love them all.
I also like rainbow-coloured clothes, or that everything is related to the sky and the weather. It's very nice to look at, and it goes well with her hair and eyes. I could never forget her.
She's literally Just Keiki, But less Desperate and not quite forgotten yet. Because hear me out.
They're both getting replaced by newer and newer more advanced ways,
For keiki it was Industrialization and abandonment for Idols. For Chimata it's Obviously Online Shopping.
But unlike Keiki She isn't as Deeply forgotten as her yet.
And just as you've said, they're both fighting for their survival. Their relevance on the world, Given enough time and she might as well end up just as forgotten as Keiki, Which is a genuinely hear-breaking fate
@@takebacktheholyland9306 She not Keiki; she's Kanako; right down to her scheme involving the Tengu and Youkai Mountain; and her having blue hair.
I mean; UM is basically MoF 2.0. Down to having Green Nitori and Blue Aya.
@@raikaria3090 and Young Ran?
Her story really focuses Touhou back to the basic struggle that pretty much every Youkai in gensokyo has grappled with. They’re all slowly being forgotten due to the changing of the times, that’s why they moved to Gensokyo in the first place. I think Chimata is interesting because even in Gensokyo, which is supposed to be built from the ground up for the purpose of preserving all Youkai, she is struggling to stay alive. It suggests that there are probably still many Youkai in Gensokyo that still gets forgotten & disappear. It shows that Gensokyo is not perfect, which is interesting.
I can only imagine what Chimata felt like when Reimu came in to beat the shit out of her. It must be scary being in that situation.

I wasn’t a fan of Chimata or her theme at first, but like most people here, they’ve both really grown on me. Her design is really great, and I like how goofy her pose is, plus this song is filled with so much emotion with Chimata’s last stand to save the marketplaces that are the source of her dwindling life. She really took a final stand here and you can hear it throughout the song.
her pose is made to look like a dollar symbol $ and is actually kinda menacing in some fanarts
@Jadon O'Neal steam market place and trading card games is the place to give her a boost lmao
Thats touhou music in general
@Jadon O'Neal I think she doesnt get faith from online marketplaces, just in-person ones, which explains why shes so weak as businesses at the time began closing down..
@@buiphamthanhvinh8265 I wanna see someone make me scared of this shit
I was also really confused as to why Chimata was such a underwhelming fight. I was kind of mad for not getting another epic showdown like in 17 but, I realized that it's way better when you really think about it. Chimata is pissed when you're trying to stop the circulation of cards, essentially her lifeblood, plus adding on to the fact that she was "betrayed" by the other two just adds to her anger. It is a quiet sort of power.
And her desperation of not dying makes her even more... how can I say... insane. I think that's why her non spells are just bullet spams and her last spell is basically her trying to kill us
Not to mention she's basically a dying god who is also new to Gensokyo.
Needless to say, any fight against her won't exactly be "challenging"
quiet rage perhaps?
And thats why her beginning none spell looks like a milky wave of disaster
It certainly explains the Pure Furies leitmotif.
Probably the “calmest” final boss theme ever, hell I would say it’s one of the most unique theme the incident aint life-threatening at all
The incident is only life threatening for Chimata, which is really unique

Chimata's currently held in an asylum due to that last part.

One of the best final boss themes ever. 2:36 is genius. For me, it often plays during her survival spell card "Rainbow Ring of People" and it fits perfectly, like riding back and forth on a rainbow. The perfect theme for an old god rising to power again and becoming visible to the eyes of the people. I could talk for hours about how this theme is one of the best in the whole series.
I want to give your comment more than 1 like to show my agreement with your opinion but I can't. Chimata's theme is one of my favorite theme in Touhou, I alway click it everytime RUclips recommend me this song. And 2:36 is also my favorite part of the song
this is one of the only final boss songs that gives me genuine chills.
I like how this theme has a couple of climaxes instead of one epic climax, because it doesn't need to have one. This isn't like the Lunarians trying to eradicate all of humanity, or Keiki forcing animal spirits away and leaving them with no choice but to invade the surface. This incident is simple and at the end harmless, so the song itself is also calm. But that doesn't mean the song is any less grand, the main climax at 1:51 is the proof of that.
The entire song is one big climax. A climax of the entire game.
This incident is darker than you think. It's not a incident that put in risk the life of the world or something, but it's a dark incident if you look by Chimata's side
"calm" boss songs are for characters that have much more of an impact that they first let on, like miko
The 2:13 piano gives me life.
I like how some people still don't even know that the main climax is at 2:36
call me a lunatic but this theme has probably managed to evoke the most emotion out of me from all of touhou. there's so much despair in this despite how lurid chimata's presentation is, & it's not delivered in a melodramatic way either- moreso as if you're forced to continue down a path & there's not much you can do to stop it besides see it through to the end. a lot of tragedy is behind chimata herself as well, both in game & in the real world- she was pretty much left for dead if it weren't for megumu & tsukasa, ironically. a comment on another video said that she's zun's reaction to the past year & its effects on not only marketplaces, but rare occurrences in general, & his fear of these spaces eventually becoming defunct. that means a lot to me.
What ever he makes the songs r good yea
She got Keiki'd but she's not quite as far down as her
But she's definitely going down that path of being abandoned and forgotten
Capitalism destroyed our souls, but corona-chan hollowed them out.
I'm literally selling an NFT Haiku right now. I'm not joking.
Welcome to the new age.
first time I listen to this song, I got shivers all the way, music theory can get you hard, well if you can understand it
zun again being a good storyteller, moreso than we realize
I like how a lot of us (or i think so) didn't get convinced by her theme The first Time we heard It but now we agree Is a really nice theme, her battle Is cool and The last spellcard was Very original
I really think Chimata Is a good character and how she Is in Gensokyo cause (i assume) The pandemic Made The principal market go from phisical exchange to Online exchange, and this resulted in her geting weak, what a nice place to recover Faith than Gensokyo Where nor pandemic or online market exists huh ?
(Sorry if i had grammar errors)
Your right :0 no wonder chimata came to gensokyo
Nah, her battle is stupid, stupid spellcards, stupid nons with repetitive patterns.
A very stupid long-dragging survival spell-card.
The only memorable thing about her whole battle is the final spellcard, and that is still not very climatic for a final spellcard (I'm not saying it's a bad spellcard), it would fit better as a penultimate spell.
@@psychicfire8232 contrarian opinion go brrrrrrrrrrrr
@@midnafan132 what do you mean? i played the game enough to conclude her battle is pretty meh, probably the worst final boss battle since Miko. There are many reasons for it, such as her spells lacking personality, being extremly simplistics, seriously, one of her spells is just Keiki's spell but with less work.
Her non-spells are just the same thing over and over, which is sad, given how varied were Keiki's nons, and also, she just uses boring amulets as the sole item for her nons.
There's actually 2 things worth in that battle, the final spell and the penultimate spell, they look good, but that's just it.
Overall Chimata looks more like a extra boss than a final boss.
Fun fact: Matara-jin used to be regarded as a god of epidemics. If they were pleased then they would cure diseases and protect people from epidemics and shit, but if they were displeased they would instead unleash them upon the world... Okina was _very_ displeased with the trump-era, wasn't she? She totally unleashed covid-19 upon the world in order to pad out the numbers of Gensoukyou's gods, didn't she?
Zun also did her pose tho. Pretty good actually ngl. The way she points her finger up and down.
The ability the relinquish one’s ownership. Kinda reminds me of kazuma’s steal.
Her pose suggests a dollar sign, with her arms creating the S shape and her fingers approximating the vertical stroke.
It could be the sign of "up" or "down" that defined any markets.
@@guik0968 It could be an amalgamation of both, if you think about it.
I'd wager it's also a reference to the Rider-Waite magician's tarot. The fingers are in similar positions, indicating a similar spark of creativity and active force.
As above, so below.

I think Chimata represents something that we as fans forget sometimes, and that is the tragedy that is all of Gensokyo's non-human residents. They were all forgotten, thrown away by humanity's fickle collective mind. Given life by us, and killed by us. As humanity lets itself slip further and further away from it's core, these beings we used to revere slip away with it. That, to me at least, is a good reason to possibly put Chimata in my top 5 characters
Wait, are you seriously telling me that people forgets about that obvious thing?! Like, how could you even forget something like that, gensokyo is literally based on that! On old fantasies... or as how Yukari Would say- *a Necrofantasia.*
Just a reminder that, outside of fringe cases like Sumireko, everybody in Gensokyo was either born there or at one point thought to themselves “this world has no place for me anymore”. It’s very somber.
When Chimata's theme came out, I thought it was one of the best ZUN's track ever.
After almost 2 years, I think... Her theme is still one of the best. I like how diversive her theme is, how many different yet similar melodies it has... My ears are happy to listen to it ;)

Most underrated touhou character. She has a cool trader character and caused a unique incident and to top it off her design is phenomenal!
Considering how somewhat high she is in the popularity poll.. mmm..
You gotta look back at the PC-98 characters for that "underrated" statement.
Mizue,Kikuri and Singyoku crying in the distance due to overly underrated
I think her design is just alright
With the concept of "lunar rainbow market goddess" you can really go in a lot of directions.
The direction ZUN picked is, i guess fitting, although she looks more like some sort of high fashion model and not so much market goddess... The gods in Touhou just look like ordinary people so i don't think there's much to complain there.
And that's about it really, it's certaintly not bad, it's just alright, the rainbow motif is really in your face with all that sky stuff, but i think it could have been pulled off more creatively and interestingly, pushing that marketplace goddess concept further, but as she is, she's fine.
Although, i have heard a few people saying that her dress is supposed to represent how she's fighting to come from scraps as she ain't got no faith, but really, i don't think that's the case... Her dress looks too deliberate, the textures are all the same and also, zippers? It's not really scrap-alike, and i don't think that's at all the thing ZUN was going for with her
She's not really that, her whole objective is of getting more power and not really getting faith as if it was food she was starving for. Why she wants more power? I don't know, just because i guess, Touhou characters are as deep as a plate most of the time.
But what i do really enjoy is her musical theme, it's just super intricate and it has more character and story she even has right now... Just goes to show how good ZUN is at his music
You all are capping just to mention your underrated favorites. She was literally absent in every popularity pool and is rarely mentioned. The whole game is

Now this is the theme I always talking about:
I love everything about this theme, the first time I listen to it I immediately loved it. After Idolatrize World, this is a different one. This theme doesn't have to be intense and epic at it's own will (even I find it really epic), it start off unique, cheerful, and energetic. And yes, the choir sample is by far my favorite part of this theme (give it the timeline cuz I can't stop listening to this part at 1:30). It's like fighting a god, which make sense that she's a god of marketplaces. As for her design, I actually like it too. Like it's weird, but it's really endearing to look at, hers and Megumu's design are my favorites in this game. This is an unpopular opinion, but I find it a lot better than Pure Furies and Idolatrize World, in fact this is my new favorite final boss theme after Kobito of the Shining Needle, overall my favorite theme in Touhou. My god, UM OSTs are so interesting and I really love it.
I hope I'm not the only one who *REALLY* likes this theme the first time I hear it, hopefully ;w;

Immemorial Marketeers is the epitome of perfection track for me, absolutely love this theme, best Touhou song by far that I always had a special place in my heart! "Tenkyuu", period.
I am listening to it right now for the first time and it is amazing. I love all the different parts, it sounds melodic, cheerful, sad, melancholic, all at the same time
i find it weird the first time and kinda interrupted because focusing on the battle. But yeah, this is such a good track.
The essay was worth the read.
For some reason I'm still convinced that ZUN's child draw Chimata at first and ZUN liked it so much that he actually made her a character because honestly Chimata's design looks like it was made like a child
Well, if its true its still cute.
He did credit his family in the credits
Could the story be literally just made up by his family? Then he just made it Touhou Styled or more complex?
@@yehwat527 No, UM's story was based on the pandemic and how the markets around the world are closing due to COVID. Since he misses the time when markets were full and bustling which inspired the story for this game

Everyone saying that they have to get used to this theme to like it but for me, i instantly fell in love
personally I think Chimata's design fit her, her theme is something representing the marketplace, as someone mentioned that there's multiple climates.
For her ability, when you actually think about it, it makes sense as if "you gift something to someone", despite the ownership is technically "someone's", you would still say this gift is given by yourself and you would be somewhat angry if the "someone" just toss your gift into a trash can. But if change the case to "you sell a gift to someone", your own mind would tell you that "this gift is his/hers" and would not care if the person you sell to throw that gift into a shredder.

i know the older music was very catchy and stuff but let's be real here, his late works can evoke emotions more pure and true. and yes, it'll sounds catchy too if you've used to it, trust me...
@@eggwah It's a mixed bag for me. I love the compositions in the new stuff, but I really like how the instruments sound in the older games too. Chimata's theme in the Imperishable Night style would be incredible
The building to and like release? of that little little section between the forty to fifty seconds in to this always gives me goosebumps for whatever reason
chimata my beloved
Call me weird, but this theme is slowly becoming my favourite final boss theme
For me it's on par with lunatic princess and egoistic flowers, which are my favourite final boss themes
just like the theme itself
_slowly_
No, it's fine.
2 years into this fandom and this still is my favourite boss theme
2:37 doesn't make me tear up like in Emotional Skyscraper or The Sea where One's Home Planet Reflects (knowing context)
2:37 doesn't portray as much power as True Administrator or Ore from the Age of the Gods
The melody isn't too ground-breaking like in Idola Deus or Wind God Girl
In fact, I would have been disappointed if ZUN tried to force-fit a super touching melody into this, for example. The emotions this song portrays are unique to Chimata. In my opinion, one of them is desperation in the face of dwindling physical marketplaces in the real world, since it sounds like repeated wailing. Another is turmoil/chaos/simply instability of the stock market, as the melody oscillates violently (also seen in the pose (which could also be interpreted as a dollar sign)). Of course, you have your interpretations.
That shows its thought-provoking as well; this melody sure is intriguing, and intriguing melodies take a substantial amount of time to warm up to, as did this song, at least for me.
The bottom line is that this is yet another a novel and unique masterpiece by the mastermind. It's not another Evening Star. It's not another Egoistic Flowers. This is assurance that, after 24? 25? 26? games, ZUN's best years are certainly not behind him. He still has tricks up his sleeve, and he hasn't lost his creativity. There's a reason why Touhou 14 onwards is called the meme era of Touhou. This is why I don't pick favourites in Touhou music. They're all good music.
Above all, the ZUNpet still slaps.
Agreed.
I don't think any song needs to be absolutely ground breaking to be very pleasing, so i do very much so enjoy this, also, which Evening Star are you talking about? The classic one from Immaterial and Missing Power or from Antinomy of Common Flowers?
Chimata's theme has the best ZUNpets arrangement in my opinion.
Especially at 2:37
ZUN released an improved version of this track on his new CD. He added more Zunpets to this part and it's sooooooo gooooooood.
@@cc.amadeo Do you know either the name or which CD that version was launched?
Unless I screw something up, 2:37 almost always ends up syncing perfectly with the beginning of her survival spell for me. Feels amazing every time.
maybe i'm crazy but in my opinion this is one of the best touhou themes i have ever listened
1:52 has no right being that good!
nah you’re not crazy!
the first time i listened to this theme was the same day kaguya became 2nd on my best girl list
you arent this is genuinely the best
Choirs are something I wish to hear in more Touhou songs, and I’m really glad to see ZUN used it more in this game!
About the better music knowledge, why not try timestamps?
Now this is a weird theme, everyone thought it was really underwhelming for a final boss - considering the impact Idolatrise World left, it's not too surprising. But then a week or two later everyone's loving it. Really goes to show that first impressions aren't everything.
As for my thoughts... see above, really. I wasn't too big at first, but it's grown on me quite a lot. It gives me an impression of a bustling crowd (especially the intro), fitting for a market goddess, and the way the mood rises and falls definitely suits the idea of trading well.
Cards :
-Are pictures
-Can only be sold and bought, can't be stolen
Hmmmmm
Does that mean Chimata created NFTs ?
Ironic if you ask me, considering her power is directly connected to *Physical Markets*
If anything her powers basically run counter to that. If something is bought and sold, it will always belong to its original owner. NFTs are not tangible goods and she basically ensures that people who legitimately purchase artwork and not some facsimile of a piece always retain value and ownership of it.

gosh I adore her design
My 3rd comment on this video, noice~
This theme reached top 30, and the most popular UM track out of them. Better yet, Chimata's the most popular UM character by 44th place in this year's popularity poll (I was expecting Tsukasa or Megumu but whatevs lol) and I'm very happy with that.
Unsurprisingly she is the final boss so yea
Just re-listening now, it sticks out that the only modulation in this one is one semitone up from the home key. Usually, ZUN goes through far more modulations in each piece, and they're typically far more dramatic. Sure, one semitone means sharing hardly any notes with the initial key, but even so, it's effectively a truck driver's gear change-that is, a trick that tends to characterise pop songs. That might be why some find this theme a little underwhelming-while it's fabulous and dramatic, it doesn't go as over the top in driving the melody through as many keys as it can as per regular Touhou tradition. In that regard, it feels deliberately understated. It still slaps, though. Maybe ZUN just didn't feel the need to modulate as much as usual, since the theme's already so expansive.
_"Where is that Bustling Marketplace Now?"_ Yeah that's me whenever crypto crashes.
it is intriguing how well SFF can describe things to the viewer. "You know that part that goes SKRRRRRRT is really neat" and EVERYONE knows what that's about. Have we transcended language?
Tenkyuu for the extension
1:30 just hits so hard I love it
Final stages in Touhou be like:
1: An ancient temple
6: A clock tower
10: A giant lake full of onbashira
15: An ocean on the moon
17: Cyberpunk dystopia
18: *A gay pride parade*
14: A literally upside-down castle
16: **Narumi's Asshole**

@Selene gotta remove that fantasy feeling once somehow
First impression of this theme was that it was good, but felt kinda like an extra boss theme. Same with the fight; it was kinda puzzle-y in the same way you would expect an extra boss to be. Thoughts on the fight haven't changed much but the theme is now one of my Touhou hype songs because it carries so much energy with it
Randomly was recommended this video. Never played touhou, but know of it due to watching a friend play it and the osts are pretty nice.
due to latest chapter of lotus eater, i guess she found that bustling market
Tenkyuu for posting this.
this is amazing. The starting piano gives a sense of urgency and ominous energy. Feel like can hear past theme start a few notes then become something else.
I love Chimata's design so much-
This theme is much like most people say. The climax of the game and their right. From the Mercato ahhs to the new drum kit this theme is a great breath of fresh air. There isn't a bad part in this theme. But my favorite part is 1:30 that synthy bell (beauty pop bell) is so amazing and gives the theme a more mythical tone to it.
Chimatas pose is literally Stonks and Not Stonks; she is literally stuck in the limbo between profit and bankruptcy (Destruction) Her fight with you, her final venture, will decide her state of existence
Don't need to know the story to be amazed by her amazing theme and design, just when you think Touhou themes can't get any better. Incredible.
One of the weirdest track titles in Touhou: how many other are a question? In any case, a really good theme, though not the most intense or emotional final boss theme in the series.
Welp, there is ''UN Owen was her?'', ''Hiroari Shoots a Strange Bird ~ Till When?'', ''Spiritual Domination ~ Who done it? '' Does the Forbidden Door Lead to This World, or the World Beyond?', and ''Did You See That Shadow? ''. Also the theme doesn't need to be emotional nor intense, the incident this time isn't that dangerous for Gensokyo.

I truly feel like I'm dancing on the stars, listening to this.
I love this theme. Others many not like it because it doesn't have one huge epic climax, but I think it's symbolic of the pared-back stakes of this game's incident. Think of DDC, LoLK, or WBaWC which had very serious incidents, and how epic their final boss themes are. This game is far less threatening to Gensokyo, and the music reflects this. But it's still REALLY GOOD. This and Momoyo's theme are some of my new favorites. UM as a whole is just an amazing game.

Out of all the final boss songs, I’d say this one grew on me the most. Now I love this theme a little bit too much.

Touhou 18 is an absolute masterpiece when it comes to music (Boss 1, Stage 3 and 4 boss theme, the whole stage 5, 6 and extra )

Like how they didn't like Hecatia's design but then saw the light a few years later?
Coming back to this after 19's full release. Still my favorite theme of all-time, I don't care what anyone says. I always had a special place for this in my heart. 1:30
Also, Unconnected Marketeers was the first Touhou game that got released when I started into Touhou so there's that. Which is why I love Chimata's theme alot haha.
