The GameCube controller is compatible with any game that is compatible with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is specifically designed to distinguish between the two, other games assume you are using a Pro Controller when you are using a GameCube controller.

Unfortunately, due to the way the Switch is programmed, the GameCube controller is detected as a Pro Controller. As a result, you can play games like Splatoon that require more buttons, and games like this that require tilt.
I’ll give it to the boys on this one, that level is a huge oversight on Nintendo’s part. That works on the Wii U cause you’re either using the gamepad or wiimotes, all of which have motion controls. The switch promotes using more controllers but not all of them have motion controls. This port has looked decent enough thus far but that level was baaaaad.

Officially you aren't supposed to use gc controllers for anything other than smash, which is why it registers as a pro controller on menu screens etc.
