Ramen and hipster coffee (shops) is all the daytime fuel I ever need any time I am in Tokyo. Never been to Okikubo and nice video showcasing the neighborhood ramen scene.
Thanks for the extensive introduction. Having only tried ramen rage nearby, definitely wouldn't mind eating a few more bowls here! The tsukemen and spicy miso ramen will probably be my go to spot when i do explore this area! Really liking these kind of series, showcasing different ramen styles in 1 area.
Ramen Rage is a great place! Awesome you went there. Fun interior too, right? Ogikubo definitely has a lot of ramen variety and those 2 (tsukemen and spicy miso) def stand out among the bunch.
Urinbo was one of your first vids to the world of ramen, and the first time I had to call my order の ticket. Love to see a top 5 or countdown type recommendation for best easy access ramen, no to low queue/wait, just good shit to rec to avoid the best ramen world ichiran stuff from every other blogger. Seriously, purse ya lips together and selfie a bowl at ichiran in Ueno, get views. Keep gettin' on with the rare ones, do a top 5 one in tokyo, TOURIST DISTRICT. Gotta be some good ones right, I waited for an hour for shio near Akihabara!!!!!
Thanks for watching! You've been there from the beginning, remembering even Urinbo. Def want to do some top 5 or 10 list videos this year - def styles of ramen, areas, even perhaps convenience and cost performance, as you mentioned.
I’m from Ottawa in Canada and the tsukemen with the slimy noodles sounds fantastic. I like a good sea flavour and heavy chicken broth. Keep up the great work love the video’s
Big thumbs up for that spice miso ramen with the hefty noodles @ HOOK ?? I don't think slimy noodles would grab my attention, LOL! That's an interesting concept though.
The karaoke photos were a nice touch, haha! The style of pork for juuhachiban looked pretty unique, and I'd want to try the charred pork on hanamichi's ramen. I'm not sure how I feel about the RO water as usually these filtration systems need to remineralise the water, but I guess it's pure. I'm not sure if I've seen soup as dark as Nanairo's shoyu ramen, it reminds me of a chicken version of Penang prawn noodle soup without the chilli
I miss karaoke...have stayed away since 2020! Like a good Filipino, need to get a "at home" karaoke system 😅. Thanks for watching! Nice commentary on the specific bowls - in particular, I really miss Mayalsian food! Never been to Penang (done other places) but will make sure to grab some of that when there 😊
Wow! Great reviews of some really great looking ramen! I would definitely be put off by the slimy noodles..it reminded me of that Japanese Grated yam dish which is really slimy too. :) So many good place to go to! C’mon Japan! Open back up for tourists! 👏
Thanks for watching! It's not quite as slimy as tororo, the grated yam, but slimy enough. I know, re: the borders! Japan's taken a "sakoku" approach again.
Uchoku looked the best to me. Too bad the toppings weren't great. You can definitely tell the ones which have been around a long time as they do not look very modern in presentation. Thanks for another great round up! :)
Uchoku is amazing. Toppings were still good - I think I was just expecting more with all the hype they've been getting. Yes, it's such a contrast in Ogikubo between the old and the new (shops)! Thanks for watching 😊
Hi Frank….thank you for another mouth watering video. I’m curious if you’ve come across vegetarian ramen dishes on the menus? I’ve noticed a lot of the broths are either pork or fish based. Just curious. As for the noodles in the kelp broth… hmmmmm…I think the “slimy” texture may be a little off putting, hard to say having never tried it. Take care 😊🇨🇦
The kelp water tsukemen might grow on you (like moss 😅)! It's very tasty if you can ignore the slimy aspect. I love it. There are only a handful of ramen restaurants in Japan that have vegetarian options on their menu, "Soranoiro" and "T's Tantan" to name two in Tokyo. If there was more local demand, maybe that'll change in the future!
What’s funny is you comment on the high price of Uchiko, in the us that portion is probably going for 25$ USD at least!! Can’t wait to go to japan and not take out a mortgage to get good ramen 😋
Frank, it seems that there are two major components of ramen: the soup and the noodles. The accoutrements aren't that important OVERALL, but can tip the balance. Is this a fair assessment?
Yes indeed - that relationship between the soup and noodles is everything. While some ramen shops can be know for having great toppings, they're still in a way "second fiddle" - an added texture or flavor contrast. At the same time though, ramen would look and be very lonely / dull without them!
Thanks for watching and happy you enjoyed it! Haha, my hair looks like the end of a mop, doesn't it? I think it'll still be there in the next one (working through backlog).
I’m endlessly confused as a Westerner about the East Asian palette: why is “slimy” such a prevalent texture?! The spicy one that made the shop owner concerned for your health looked delicious 😂
I think slimy shows up because of the amount of sea elements, whether seaweed or some sort of fish 😃. "Bingiri" is one of my favorite bowls in all of Tokyo - spicy or otherwise!
Let me know which bowl has got you most excited!
you had me at calorific to the max! looks so oishi
That miso ramen looks great
This channel deserves more viewers...
Thanks for watching and the kind words 😊
Love the videos, I don’t know if you can… but it would be amazing if you can include more footage of your eating the food !! Keep up the good work!
Agreed
Will try to squeeze some more in - hard for me to provide commentary inside most places while eating but can attempt at more eating footage 😊
Your videos feel like I'm not only travelling across the world, but also back in time with all these gems you show us. I love it, thank you!
Thanks for saying that and I'm glad that's the case! Will keep the ramen gems coming.
I hope I remember to watch this video again when I am finally able to return to Japan.
Add Ogikubo to your list for when the borders reopen!
This is why we are going to Japan - thank you so much
Thank you! The ramen is waiting for you.
Gotta visit this neighbourhood when I visit Tokyo!
Ogikubo pound for pound is amazing for ramen!
Ramen and hipster coffee (shops) is all the daytime fuel I ever need any time I am in Tokyo. Never been to Okikubo and nice video showcasing the neighborhood ramen scene.
Ogikubo will provide just the fuel you need! Thanks for watching and glad the video was enjoyable.

Nice and delicious summary Frank.
Thank you - was petty rapid fire in this one - we covered a lot of ramen ground!
Amazing video as always man. Glad to see you growing!
Thanks for watching and saying that 😊
would love all but the tantanmen one....looks spicy....but might try it
I would train a bit for that tantanmen first - it even threw me off guard 😅
🤣😆🤣”does it turn you on or does it turn you off”🤣😂😆. Thanks Frank for the laugh of the day.😘
Lol. If there were any English speakers around that overheard me..
I was thinking about visiting Ogikubo. Now I have more reasons to go when Japan opens up. 🍜🍜🍜
I'm sure you'll enjoy it - ramen, coffee, or otherwise!
I’m from Ottawa in Canada and the tsukemen with the slimy noodles sounds fantastic. I like a good sea flavour and heavy chicken broth. Keep up the great work love the video’s
That spot (Uchoku) has got your name on it! Thanks for watching and all the best from Tokyo 😊
Sweating from spicy food makes it very apparent that it’s spicy but it shows you’re invested
The dedication!
Big thumbs up for that spice miso ramen with the hefty noodles @ HOOK ?? I don't think slimy noodles would grab my attention, LOL! That's an interesting concept though.
I probably exaggerated about the slimy texture - but definitely does remind of the sea! HOOK is your kind of pace - those thick noldles are top-notch!
Uchoku is tops on my list to eat when I can make it over.
I don't think you'll be disappointed 👍
Looks tasty as usual 👌
You should add Ogikubo to your list!
@@5AMRamen That spicy miso ramen looked amazing...if I could handle the spice level. The list is super long now...better open that border soon.

Having very few Ramen options in my city, this is killing me. Thank Frank for keeping the Ramen lust going.
Haha, I like that phrase you've coined, "Ramen Lust". Thanks for watching and happy to contribute to the lust list!
Wow, such variety! I'll take one of each, even the slimy one😂👍
Good on you! Despite the historical roots, the ramen scene in Ogikubo is diverse (not just classic bowls).
Tried to look for Uchoku (迂直)
But seems like the shop is closed already? Could not find any info on their relocation
Wow! Great reviews of some really great looking ramen! I would definitely be put off by the slimy noodles..it reminded me of that Japanese Grated yam dish which is really slimy too. :) So many good place to go to! C’mon Japan! Open back up for tourists! 👏

I liked all the bowls but I would like to try the miso ramen at Hook the most.
Hook serves one of the best bowls of miso ramen in Tokyo, and perhaps even the country!
Uchoku looked the best to me. Too bad the toppings weren't great. You can definitely tell the ones which have been around a long time as they do not look very modern in presentation. Thanks for another great round up! :)

Frank, do you know what is up with Uchoku? Do they have a new location yet?
It seems like they're still looking for a new location!
Not a fan of the slimy stuff, but the spicy ones looked great!👍
You'd love them (the spicy ones)!

Six soy sauces + kelp + bonito + niboshi = bookmarked
Haha, yes! You'd love the fish undercurrent.
What’s funny is you comment on the high price of Uchiko, in the us that portion is probably going for 25$ USD at least!! Can’t wait to go to japan and not take out a mortgage to get good ramen 😋
This is true! We're very spoiled in that regard. With the weak Yen, ramen is less than 7 USD in most places here now!
I love how extensive the variety of ramen can be, no wonder you can eat ramen everyday
Exactly - keeps it deliciously interesting!
Frank, it seems that there are two major components of ramen: the soup and the noodles. The accoutrements aren't that important OVERALL, but can tip the balance. Is this a fair assessment?

Another great video. Thanks for sharing. Looks fantastic. But your hair, man. Your hair... You must do something..!.. Lol
Thanks for watching and happy you enjoyed it! Haha, my hair looks like the end of a mop, doesn't it? I think it'll still be there in the next one (working through backlog).
Porky Misoey Garlicy Ryuuey.....why choose! Just put them all in there!
Why have just one when you can enjoy them all!
I’m endlessly confused as a Westerner about the East Asian palette: why is “slimy” such a prevalent texture?!
