- Three beautiful improvisations by Daniel Roth at the great Cavaillé-Coll-Mutin in the Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre Basilica in Paris. First impro: Fanfare, Second impro: Scherzetto on ''Victimae paschali laudes'', Third impro: Fantaisie sur '' Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme''. 1984 recording.
Juste beau de la première à la dernière note. Ces trois improvisations mériteraient d'être retranscrites en belles pages de musique pour orgue du XXe s. Ce que j'apprécie dans les improvisations de Daniel Roth, c'est qu'elles sont toutes des œuvres originales avec un fourmillement d'idées et de trouvailles parfaitement organisées, orchestrées pourrait-on dire. De l'art, du grand art !
The Organ of Sacre Couer is a mini version of Notre Dame and St Sulpice combined which makes this a wonderful organ blessed by God.
Always a pleasure when this turns up in my RUclips feed. Just. Wow. While on an orchestra tour in 1989, I strolled up to Sacre Coeur from the little Hotel we were staying at on the bottom of Montmartre. As much as I did know of the Parisian churches, I knew little of Cavaille-Coll other than he was known as THE great romantic organ builder for the French Repertoire. Growing up an EP Biggs/Bach fan (from my Dad's LPs) it wasn't until I found the music of Messiaen a few years later that I got to know the C.C. instruments. I remember seeing this case, looming high in the dark recesses of this magnificent building and just taking in the mystery and wonderment of what she must sound like. Now I know. Better than I could've imagined. And Roth...oh my.

The organ originally was the Baron d'Espee's house/castle organ, apparently sold back to Cavaille-Coll when his neighbors complained about his playing Wagner in the middle of the night, then sold and installed by Charles Mutin in Sacre-Coeur. These recordings from the Daniel Roth CD are amazing. The Fantaisie sur "Wachet auf" stunningly and creatively captures the text of the hymn as it moves from Jerusalem (the world) asleep to being awakened to the arrival of Jesus at the Last Judgement as in the Bible book of Matthew 25. If people can find the CD it is well worth the effort. Roth's dramatic composition on the CD for a papal visit to Sacre-Coeur when he was organist also is absolutely fantastic.
@@chronochromie772 Interesting - somewhat different reports about the baron. Could be that two versions were conflated. One has it that the complaints about him playing Wagner late at night occurred after he had purchased a large home in Paris and he had yet another Cavaille-Coll organ built and installed and the neighbors there sued.

The Cavaillé-Coll combined with the Sacre-Coeur's acoustic can be utterly terrifying...
The reverberation is amazing ! Well, a Cavaille-Coll pipe organ instrument in such a huge building wouldn't sound better with such a Master playing... Congrats, Maestro Roth ! JAL - Rio de Janeiro

Merkwaardig dat dit prachtige instrument van Aristide Cavaillé Coll (later gerestaureerd geheel in de stijl van Cavaillé Coll door Charles Mutin, ook een grootheid in de wereld van orgelbouwers) zo weinig wordt vermeld in de geschiedenis en op RUclips.
Daniël Roth is één van de weinige toporganisten die dat wel doet met zijn prachtige improvisaties.

Eine fantastische Improvisation und ebenso klingt dementsprechend auch die Orgel. Eine künstlerische Qualität die begeistert.
Allein die zungenstimmen einfach crass! Ich denk das da auch einige zungenstimmen auf Hochdruck gestellt wurden

Some pianists are what they call at Steinway "Steinway Artists", Daniel Roth is definitely a "Cavaillé-Coll artist" and it also definitely sounds like it!
Cavaille-Colls are arguably the finest organs in the world. Steinway are publicity merchants who pretty well have 'A' list performers under threat of blackmail if they don't use their instruments.

on dirait l' orgue de la cathedrale saint Paul de Londres
Il s' agit probablement d' une impression de puissance doublée due au fait que la réverbération du sacré Cœur est moins importante que celle de la cathédrale saint Paul, ce qui diminue naturellement l' amplitude des sons (non pas l intensité ni la dynamique mais l' amplitude sonore ) ! je ne vois pas en quoi l' harmonisation est différente, ce n'est pas un orgue aux tons baroques ! Par contre les jeux des Cavaillé Coll ont sans doute un timbre différent de ceux des orgues de Willis, cela est certain ! En tant que musicien passionné par les orgues j' ai pu constater que la brillance des orgues Anglos saxons possède une couleur bien distincte de la brillance détimbrée et criarde de l' orgue Cavaille Coll. L' orgue Cavaillé Coll m' a souvent paru comme un orgue très spécifique comparé à l' orgue anglais qui apparait riche en nombre de jeux mais qui reste plus conventionnel, adapté même au cinéma car ses sonorités relativement toutes issues de l' époque moderne ont constitués une norme qui s'est exportée partout dans le monde par la suprématie de la culture anglo-saxonne ! Or le savoir faire français en matière de facture d' orgue apparait comme plus spécial, plus détaché ! Chacuns aura son opinion mais je trouve que les 2 types de factures ; Anglaises et françaises ont chacunes leurs qualités et leurs défauts propres : les anglais ont créés des orgues avec de très bons aigus malgrès des basses un peu "pâteuses" dans les anches, et les français ont crées des orgues puissants (beaucoups de jeux d' anches) mais qui à mon goût sonnent mal les aigus et particulièrement les mixtures.
bastien delaniau Si vous prenez une contre-bombarde 32' de Willis, c'est plus doux, plus discret, les facteurs anglais vont jusqu'à installer du cuir non tanné autour de la rigole, afin que la languette ne batte pas directement sur le métal. Une Contre-Bombarde, une Bombarde de 16' et même les Trompettes 8' du facteur français sont bien plus éclatantes que les mêmes jeux anglais. De plus, les pieds des tuyaux de Bombarde anglais sont pratiquement toujours en bois, alors que Cavaillé-Coll les fit en métal! Tout ça a une influence sur le son. Pour le reste, c'est une question de goût personnel.
eh bien personnellement je n" aime pas les anches à la françaises justement parce qu' elles crient trop et me paraissent agaçantes ! Meme si j avoue parfois qu' en effet les anglais étouffent un peu trop leurs orgues selon les instruments, Je préfère sentir des basses amples, volumineuses qui portent la musique et non une fanfare bizarre et fatigante de chamades ou de cromornes qui vous rendent fou après une messe à notre Dame, c'est mon avis !
Il aurait fallu que la France ne donne pas le carillon à l'Oratoire Saint-Joseph de Montréal mais plutôt cet orgue !
C'est l'orgue CC modifié dans les années 30 et 50, donc avant la restauration de 85. Les plenums étaient assez tranchants d'ailleurs, peut-être qu'ils ont été assoupli depuis !
