Hi friends of fingerstyle guitar music,
back in the 80´s, after having heard Jobim´s song "Girl from Ipanema" I got in touch with his tune "One note Samba" and was fascinated by this idea, to make a song with just one note - and having great chord changes for this single note.... So in the middle of the 80´s, I made my fingerstyle version of this tune - playing in the key of Bb - as to start with the first chord = Dm.
It was fine for many many years. I also wanted to record my arrangement for many years. And while preapring this recording the last days, I had the idea to shift my arrangement a semi-tone upwards, what helps the B-Section and I can use the open low E- and A string, for getting a richer sound.
So here is my version of it - and I hope you like it...

great to hear from you again...;-))) Yes, this one is !! a real finger cracker... since I decided, to play the alternate bass line. This bass line makes some chords really complicated - but with this Jobim composition I learned a lot about jazz chords - so it is worth playing it that way....;-)))

Hi Chris, some of the chords - when played standing alone - do sound strange. Playing these chords in context with a chord progression, makes them sound right. - GG
@@GerhardGschossmann Out of context they do sound a bit strange, and it is interesting how adding other chords it can make sense. The progression is spicy but not too spicy, just right. It tickles the ears a bit.

Hallo Uli, vielen Dank für das Kompliment..... Früher hatte ich versucht, alles in Originaltonarten zu spielen - manche Sachen klingen aber auf einer Gitarre tatsächlich besser, wenn man die Tonart gut auswählt. Und grad hier hilft es ungemein, mit den leeren Bass-Saiten die Unterstützung für die Läufe im B-Teil zu haben....

Thanks for your comment, Audio Pervert... I really like the way Jobim did compose his tunes. And sometimes one can hear that he experimented with new things and ideas. And I think it is a great idea to write a song with only one note in the melody.... - it´s the same way like Picasso tried to draw a whole picture with just 1 line ...

Hi Jerry, in meiner Version sind 2-3 schwierige Griffe drin, die sich aufgrund des Wechselbasses ergeben. Spielt man den Wechselbass nur teilweise, kann man die Griffe vereinfachen. Insgesamt würde ich es bei 5-6 einstufen.

what strings do you use?

for steel string guitars I use Elixir strings for many many years. For classical or nylon string guitars I do not have such a favourite. I am still searching for the "one and only" string set. I tried out a number of Savarez strings - nylon, carbon, etc. - but was not really convinced. But indeed the D´Addario Pro Arte EJ45 do a great job. You see. I am also still searching.....
