  • The war in Syria is dragging neighbouring Lebanon to the edge of the abyss, and nowhere is the growing chaos starker than in the second city of Tripoli. Sunni militants aligned with the Syrian rebels frequently clash with fighters from the city's encircled Alawite minority, who support the Assad regime, in bitter street fighting the country's weak government is powerless to stop. With the rule of law no longer in effect in Tripoli, warlords like Sunni commander Ziad Allouki are now the city's real rulers, so VICE hung out with him and his fighters for a week to discover why they're fighting, and whether the country really is on the brink of civil war.

So when this guy goes to hang out with the Sunni's they're obnoxiously flaunting their guns and even children are popping off rounds at the sky in celebratory fire in the middle of the city and displaying generally horrendous discipline with their weapons. He talks to some Alawites and they are too busy finding extra cinder blocks to reinforce their walls so their children aren't sent to an early grave, and they speak of reason and co-existence with their other Arab brothers.

Spathius you are right from the look of it.. when you see soldiers of the Syrian army when they fight they communicate and talk very professional while the rebels group aka terrorist scream out nothing but nonsense " Allah Akbar" every second. The Alawites are moderate while the other tribes are more extremist. Dont listen to James Watson how the hell can anyone tries to act innocent when the evidence is so clear they are getting shoot at every day.. clearly we know who the aggressor of this conflict are.. The extremist when they open their mouth all they talk is God and commit in suicide bombing.

Sunnis make the majority in syria and they are oppressed by Iran militias and Bashar because he didn't step out while the alawites control all the army and the state

During the first 3 videos I've been hoping that they'd go over to the other side and show their views as well, I'm really happy that they actually did that. Most of the documentaries about this conflict show only the side of the syrian rebels and their supporters. It must have been difficult though, to make sure the other side doesn't hear you're reporting the enemy's story as well. Imagine if the Sunni commander had suddenly seen them standing on the other side! This was a very dangerous move, but it makes the story so much more interesting.

The civil war and what Syria is fighting about were fought over two different things. The civil war was mainly fought because the North wanted the South back. The Civil Rights movement was way less violent (most of it wasn't violent at all, but there was violence towards them but by no means comparable to the violence in syria) than Syria. If you honestly think the current gay marriage situation is comparable to the fighting in Syria then please elaborate as to how, because I don't follow.

Rational people like this guy in the white sports jacket, need the be the voices of reason heard in such times and region, but as usual people don't. Any any issue major to small, here in this country and around the globe- people always fall for the loud mouth, the sophist smooth talkers, the emotional and the promoters of false grandeur.

Shame on you Vice: Showing Sunni street fighters handling heavy weapons during the celebrations of Eid al-Adha when sheep are slaughtered for communal feasting and kids play with pellet guns (the very embodiment of violence). Showing civilian 'Alawis with no gun in sight (peaceful minority). It's almost comical.
