RIP Ray & Johnny!!! I went to rehab this past couple of weeks.. The Tonight Show & Family Feud put me in a good mood when I was sour. Sober life is good if you can laugh each day.
this guy doing the family feud was a natural fit. It's never been the same and in my opinion he was much better than RIchard Dawson's second run. Or anyone else afterwards. It was sad to see his life go downhill after he got fired from the feud. A bad car crash, divorce, and than the hanging.
That was a great debut for Ray. The "follow on" after the commercial was amazing as well. Ray was invited over to the couch and the laughs continued. He presented an awesome idea about the "theme song" rating system for sitcoms. Pretty funny. He took over the limelight from Carson. Ray was a good friend. We had dinner at his house in Glendale just before this appearance on the tonight show. Later, he and his family came to our home to help celebrate my wife's birthday. Sadly, fame an fortune took its toll, as it does for many that are chewed up and spit out by Hollywood fame.
He had a nose for the big dance. Man was a cleaner. One of the old guild. Hung like a jackrabbit and always was true. Hell be missed like hell. To the moon 🌕
@@paddy489 Is this just a string of "sayings" that you just made up as a super subtle joke? I'm not being sarcastic. The first four sentences AND the last one sound like "old sayings" that I've never heard before. Sort of impressed and very confused.👍👍👍(Actually, I CAN think of a meaning for "hung like a jackrabbit" but I just can't believe it's what you meant.🤷♂️)
@@TroubleToby3040 it is, thanks for the gravitas my friend. Ray was a personal friend for years. We we wined, we dined, we serviced the guild. Ray was old world. He'll be missed. Especially in Carlsbad.
He apparently had a bad back injury from a car wreck, which started a downward spiral in his life. A back injury is one of the worst things that can happen to a person....can't imagine being in constant pain all the time like that. Poor man. Peace and love to his family.
Very sad the downward spiral he went through: fired from Family Feud because of low ratings, had trouble finding gigs (possibly due to typecasting), the car accident, financial problems including losing 2 comedy clubs and his house went into foreclosure, he and his wife were in the midst of a divorce....😥
he was such a sweetie. goes to show one needs to have a strength from within that keeps us going even when those around us start to go away. i'm sad he's gone but glad he's no longer suffering
So sad what happened to him, by all accounts he was such a nice guy, no matter how busy he was if someone asked him to do a charity event he'd say yes. I remember hearing one story about him, there was a local homeless shelter struggling financially they were on the verge of having to shut down. Ray went in there, in disguise pretending to be a homeless man, spent the night there. The next morning, he wrote them a cheque for $30,000.
Debra Wolf Yeah I really feel sorry for him. Everything went terrible for him in such a short period of time. First getting kicked off Family Feud, a car accident that left him in pain, 2 comedy clubs that failed and then his wife divorced him.
I've been watching some of his family feud videos lately. I didn't know, or at least I don't remember hearing about his passing. Sad indeed. He sure had a sense of humor. RIP Ray.
That RUclipsChannel that’s what happened with Ray Combs after his accident in the 90s and that’s why he killed himself in 1996. The poor guy, and so full of talent too.
There's been some talk that he was in line to take over for Bob Barker hosting THE PRICE IS RIGHT. It's just sad that in time Combs and producer Howard Felsher's relationship soured. Ray only had Mark Goodson on his side, when Mark died, Ray was on his own.
"Personally, I was glad they cancelled The Love Boat, I used to watch it every week just hoping it would accidentally drift into Soviet waters." 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Ray Combs and Richard Dawson were the best "Family Feud" hosts in it's over 45 year run of existence. Anyone still think it was a coincidence that both of them died on the same day 16 years apart?
Just thinking...love Steve Carell, and he owned the role of Michael Scott on The Office (US version), but can anyone else picture Ray Combs in that role had he lived on?
They really were just roaring with laughter. Amazing! Thank you, Tex...your info explains why Johnny was gesturing to them at the end. Kind of like "You weren't sure, but I told you so!" Just out of curiosity, what other comedians received standing O's on their first times out...do you know?
Ray should have tried having his own sitcom. I'm sure he would have been good at it. Sure, he was good on "Family Feud", but becoming a game show host as early as he did probably wasn't a good career move. I think this because Charles Nelson Reilly once said something in an interview, I don't remember it exactly, but he said something like once you become a fixture on a game show, you career is pretty much over. He should be one to know, right?
another exception is Tom Bergeron. During and after Hollywood Squares, Tom was busy on ABC w/ America's Funniest Home Videos and by 2005, he did double-duty w/ AFV and Dancing with the Stars on ABC. And during the 2008-09 season he also guest-hosted the syndie WWtBaM.
I am actually from Ray's hometown, Hamilton, Ohio. I drive past the funeral home during his (viewing). The place was packed. I have also visited his grave in greenwood cemetery. Sad story. Seemed like a happy person. You just never know what's going on inside people's heads. I feel for his family....not his wife though. .
His mannerisms are similar to Carson's, it's a wonder why Johnny gave him the approval hand gesture at the end. Crazy to think with in a decade he'd be dead at 40.
Not entirely true. Dick Clark was a fixture on Pyramid for so many years, and even after that was over, his career continued. In fact, he still hosts New Year's Rockin' Eve.
I guess Dick Clark would be an exception, although he was doing other things besides hosting "Pyramid". That's why his career has endured as long as it has. He also hosted "American Bandstand" for many years.
Johnny totally oversold that. I was expecting some epic set, not 6 minutes of cornball. Clearly the game show host role suited him better- shame his life became unraveled so quickly.
My theory: This dude's actual personality was much different...most likely not as likable as the personality that made him famous. The personality that made him famous required TONS of energy and he burned out and had enough. Be yourself is what I mean here people.
I think you are onto something on this theory, I would agree with you, my feelings after seeing this monologue is he seemed to be working very hard to look and sound funny and does not seem natural....
That doesn’t necessarily mean that he was the same “person” in private that he was in public and in a social context. People sometimes put on “a face” for the world - even close friends. That can get exhausting especially if he was struggling with depression.
Ray was always a great guy. I work at his hometown radio station in Hamilton, Ohio. He would swing by the station for a guest appearance while he was climbing the ladder of success. This was during the Family Feud days. One day he stopped by, and it was my wife's birthday. She was a big fan. He called her at work just to say hello, and happy birthday! His son played for the Hamilton High School football team. They were playing Cincinnati powerhouse Princeton High School. It had been decades since the last win over Princeton. That night, he called, had us put him on hold, and listened to the game out in California (before streaming). Hamilton beat Princeton that night, and when we picked up the phone, he was crying on the other end. He was always doing something nice for his hometown
Richard Dawson may be the best Family Feud host, but Ray Combs always entertained me as a kid in the 90s.
RIP, Ray.
I think Coombs was far better than Dawson. Coombs was hilarious.
Definitely great at what he did
I agree as well
RIP Ray & Johnny!!! I went to rehab this past couple of weeks.. The Tonight Show & Family Feud put me in a good mood when I was sour. Sober life is good if you can laugh each day.
It’s such a shame what happened to this poor man the last 2 years of his life.
His voice alone always puts me at ease. And so dang funny. Love Ray Combs
The way he said “Survey Said”!! None like any other host
this guy doing the family feud was a natural fit. It's never been the same and in my opinion he was much better than RIchard Dawson's second run. Or anyone else afterwards. It was sad to see his life go downhill after he got fired from the feud. A bad car crash, divorce, and than the hanging.
Agree. Dawson was too weird and got worse as years went by.

love carson's remark at the very end....'that guy knows how to do it"....
Rick Anderson A great comment from a superior talent who ‘knew how to do it,’
It is so sad he took his own life.
Debra Wolf Yeah I really feel sorry for him. Everything went terrible for him in such a short period of time. First getting kicked off Family Feud, a car accident that left him in pain, 2 comedy clubs that failed and then his wife divorced him.
Alex Kanyima Yeah I know I’ve been there myself. Luckily I’m still alive.
Nelson Robert Willis They might have just been separated.
I've been watching some of his family feud videos lately. I didn't know, or at least I don't remember hearing about his passing. Sad indeed. He sure had a sense of humor. RIP Ray.
the best of us outside are sometimes sick inside
That RUclipsChannel that’s what happened with Ray Combs after his accident in the 90s and that’s why he killed himself in 1996. The poor guy, and so full of talent too.
He was funny. Obviously he was a talented comedian. I loved watching him on "Family Feud." So sad for his family.
If ray combs were alive he would be 65 years old from now
There's been some talk that he was in line to take over for Bob Barker hosting THE PRICE IS RIGHT. It's just sad that in time Combs and producer Howard Felsher's relationship soured. Ray only had Mark Goodson on his side, when Mark died, Ray was on his own.
Ray Combs was the MAN. RIP
He looks like he could be the host of to night show
"Personally, I was glad they cancelled The Love Boat, I used to watch it every week just hoping it would accidentally drift into Soviet waters."
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
He's pretty good here. The Michael Jackson and Prince fight was original. Other people took it over the years.
It's sad the Johnny Carson, Ray Combs, Michael Jackson and Prince are no longer with us. All legendary entertainers.
Ray Combs and Richard Dawson were the best "Family Feud" hosts in it's over 45 year run of existence. Anyone still think it was a coincidence that both of them died on the same day 16 years apart?
This Ray Combs fan appreciates the clip. :)
Just thinking...love Steve Carell, and he owned the role of Michael Scott on The Office (US version), but can anyone else picture Ray Combs in that role had he lived on?
Also could have made a great George Costanza (but not bald!) or a great sportscaster.
Combs and Dawson both hosted Family Feud, and they died on the same day! How's that for weird coincidence!
emanmark So weird they died on the same date.
Same day, different years. Just to clarify.
Ray Combs Ruled.
The Johnny Carson youtube channel needs to find the interview Johnny Carson ray combs
Can't believe Ray's only 30 here! RIP
Rest in peace, dear man. 🌹
Ray had so much talent he would have bounced back and would be big today if he would have hung in there. Talented guy.
The best Family Feud host
I'm shocked he wasn't chosen as Johnny's fill in.
I love his last line
Rip Ray. Thx for the laughs.
Who says Mormons can't be funny
Survey says... funny!
They really were just roaring with laughter. Amazing! Thank you, Tex...your info explains why Johnny was gesturing to them at the end. Kind of like "You weren't sure, but I told you so!" Just out of curiosity, what other comedians received standing O's on their first times out...do you know?
The birth of celebrity boxing.
RIP Ray Combs!

This is the only time I've seen a comedian's act being cut short on the Tonight Show. It must have been a time issue.
RIP Ray Combs
Such a legend...
He had a standing ovation
Ray Combs
Wow. I miss him. Ironic that MJ, Prince & Ray r gone but Joe is still with us.
spooky, Johnny, Ray and Ed...all gone
Really miss this guy- what a shame he took his own life - so talented
another exception is Tom Bergeron. During and after Hollywood Squares, Tom was busy on ABC w/ America's Funniest Home Videos and by 2005, he did double-duty w/ AFV and Dancing with the Stars on ABC. And during the 2008-09 season he also guest-hosted the syndie WWtBaM.
And 10 years later he was dead of suicide. So sad! Family Feud execs should be ashamed of themselves.
Before Family Feud
This is where the idea for celebrity boxing must of came from
Would have also made a great sportscaster!
Cincinnati/Hamilton Ohio. RIP Ray.
Wow, he lost weight between 1986 and 1988.
I am actually from Ray's hometown, Hamilton, Ohio. I drive past the funeral home during his (viewing). The place was packed. I have also visited his grave in greenwood cemetery. Sad story. Seemed like a happy person. You just never know what's going on inside people's heads. I feel for his family....not his wife though.
.
who cares
Well, ironically, Joe Namath was considered to be the new host of Family Feud but Ray was selected
I definitely could see Namath doing it.
Guy was pretty funny.
Did he get called over to the couch?
Doesn't appear so but he did get a rare standing ovation, which is what Johnny gestures towards at the end.
Some of the stuff he said here is a bit sad seeing how he passed :(
His mannerisms are similar to Carson's, it's a wonder why Johnny gave him the approval hand gesture at the end. Crazy to think with in a decade he'd be dead at 40.
RIP, Ray, RIP.
Very funny for the 80s style. Quite a bit more entertaining than Seinfeld.
This Guy committed suicide, Sad!
There was no money for his funeral and Johnny Carson paid for it.
Not entirely true. Dick Clark was a fixture on Pyramid for so many years, and even after that was over, his career continued. In fact, he still hosts New Year's Rockin' Eve.

Got it.
Corny but funny
Johnny totally oversold that. I was expecting some epic set, not 6 minutes of cornball.
Clearly the game show host role suited him better- shame his life became unraveled so quickly.
Sad sad ending to his life.
I thought he choked.
ekujj13 He did when the rope was around his neck.
he killed himself?
Ray Combs was broke when he killed himself and Johnny Carson paid for his funeral and headstone that is how much Johnny loved Ray Combs.

wrong theory. he was as identical in private as he was on stage....always 'on' as they say.
downs004 he was always just like this FYI.
That doesn’t necessarily mean that he was the same “person” in private that he was in public and in a social context. People sometimes put on “a face” for the world - even close friends. That can get exhausting especially if he was struggling with depression.

can you send me this video?
lame
Why would you say that you stupid karen.
He was creepy as hell!
It’s so sad this is how we remember him. The guy who committed suicide.
He killed himself 10 years later. 🐻
He didn’t get called to sit. Sucked
And just 10 years later he destroyed his home and hung himself at the hospital where they obviously weren't watching him. Sad.
