    Summary
    ~~~~~
    Have you ever played a game on the Steam Deck that just doesn't have a built-in pause feature?
    What about those games that you get Steam OS to suspend after pressing the Power button. . .only to resume playing the game later and end up hearing crackling or sped up audio.
    I had the sped up audio issue when playing through the second South Park game recently and it ruined those scenes until I was able to reload the game properly.
    For times like this, there's a Decky Loader plugin called Pause Game that brings this feature to any game playable on the Steam Deck.
    If you're not familiar with what Decky Loader is or how to install it, be sure to check the video description below as I just uploaded an introductory guide about it here on this channel.
    Once you have the plugin installed, you'll find it in the Decky Loader section of your Quick Settings panel.
    So press the 3-dot button on the right side of the Steam Deck.
    Scroll down to the plugin menu here.
    And you should see it in the list.
    When you first install the game, the toggles to the right here will be disabled by default.
    And you can immediately pause and resume the game you're playing using the toggle here.
    But you can also enable a feature that allows this plugin to pause your game before Steam OS suspends it.
    Like when you press the Power button to put your Steam Deck to sleep.
    You can also enable a toggle that will pause the game when the Steam Deck no longer has it in focus.
    Or you can enable this secondary toggle for the focus loss feature, that will immediately pause the game when there's an overlay displayed on the screen.
    So you can use this plugin to manually control when a game is paused or not.
    Or you can set it up so that the plugin handles everything for you so it will pause and resume automatically.
    What's happening here is the Pause Games plugin is sending a SIGSTOP command to all of the children processes of the game.
    And then sending a SIGCONT command to resume them.
    Some are comparing this plugin to the quick suspend and resume features that we see on consoles like the Xbox.
    All of the CPU and GPU resources that were being dedicated to a game you're playing will be suspended once it has been paused.
    Which is really nice if you need to use the Steam Deck for something else in a pinch.
    In its current state, the feature has worked flawlessly to pause and resume games like Sea of Stars and South Park, but the developer does make a note in the GitHub project page that says some games may not like being stopped and resumed too many times over an extended period of time.
    So try not to overuse this too much unless you're okay with losing a bit of progress.
    There are also some games that have been found to no longer respond to controller input when they are resumed from this state. There are a few workarounds that can force them to start working again, but just be aware that this could happen when using the feature with a game for the first time.
    I have yet to find a game that this plugin has issues with, but I'm sure there are a number of them out there.
    There's a reason why Valve hasn't added a feature like this into Steam OS at this time.
    Out of the box, this plugin works great with some games but I doubt they want to hassle with testing every single one out there.
