    This video made me feel a lot better that it wasn't something I was doing wrong. I never did stained glass before but have years of experience with electrical soldering, so at least I have a really good idea how to do that part....that was may thought process when I seen these kits for like %50 off. This has been a nightmare. I've watched several of your tutorials and they are very helpful and to see an experienced stained glass artist having the same problems was a relief but likenyou said this kit is very discouraging. I bought extra supplies trying to figure this out and i was only planning to so this 1 time.

      Im glad you found this video, i felt awful. For all the people just wanting to "make a quick craft". Reality is, stained glass isnt a quick craft. Its brutal but the truth. It takes time, practice and skill that a michaels kit does not contain. Im sorry you had to deal with this, id say return it and show your vote with your $. 🖤 ill send you glass before i want you to try another kit! 😂🖤

    I bought one! Wanted to learn the Art for years. SOOOoooo happy to hear it wasn't ME that was the problem!!! My first attempt was a total epic failure. I also bought the crappy 30$ soldering iron. Even more of a waste of $$. I have pulled the piece of crap back apart, fixed the darn foil and am waiting for the Amazon Gods to deliver me the tools and materials I actually need! Thanks for clarifying the gap thing. Made absolutely no sense to me.

    Also a stained glass artist and agree totally with your conclusions. However, the moon/star kit could be salvaged if you solder the star in the opening between the narrow tips of the moon. It would help the entire thing hold together better, although wire or hobby cane needs to encircle outside of moon to keep straight glass seams from buckling.

      Oh boy Edythe you would have LOVED the uncut version then!! Lol. I had to cut out 40+ minutes of just freaking out. 😂 I was feeling the same. Because it just literally doesnt work. If the flux didnt repell solder then maybe I would drop it. But it just seems impossible to me that they didnt know how bad this was before producing it on this scale.

    Thank you for suffering through this kit. I think it actually helped me. I was trying to figure out why my lead free solder wasn't working well, and my iron was not having the increased temp after not being used for a year. I was having to clean it every 2 or 3 minutes and I kept re tinning it every 5 or 10. I think I just need to go ahead and get good lead free solder instead of the stuff that got clearanced out at work.

    • @MakenzieHallie
      @MakenzieHallie  2 года назад

      Oh gosh Mel, it should be so easy to smooth through a bead. Even a good lead free like i showed in this video. Youve got the temp controlled iron part, just grab a better solder. Get that tip cleaned up and tinned. And youll be smooth sailing. This is how i essentially learned. And i think i am better at soldering because of it. Learning on a wood burning soldering iron and tip, and lead free solder, made the 60/40 & a good iron SO SO easy. Youll be shocked at the difference. ♡

    • @melodihacker7661
      @melodihacker7661 2 года назад

      There's a major difference with 60/40 lol. I was working on scraps for jewelry charms, so I was using lead free. You are the reason I got the hakko 601. I love it so much. When I was moving last year that iron was probably the best protected item in the entire move.

    One of your comments on this video say you should make a small kit… it got me thinking you should write up your review and send to michaels. Then actually offer to partner with them to create something. Especially with how your aesthetic matches really well with the kit they were trying to sell already.

      @MakenzieHallie  2 года назад +2

      Well, I would definitely love to make a kit thats actually good. With Michaels, I dont know.
      #1- I just ripped this product they sell to shreds. Idk how open they will be to a partnership of any kind in the future.
      #2- This feels like a clear money grab to me, since the product is as bad as it is, in the middle of a "stained glass art resurgence." With that said, I think it is very unlikely for them to want to work with such a small content creator on such a large scale product.

      I do go over all of that in this video. 😂 As i say, the only usable part is the glass and foil. All the other products you need to buy separately. They are trash. Again, my suggestion is to return it, get your money back or use simply the glass and foil. I am "bashing" the product because it is garbage. Not just for fun. Lol

      I guess it just felt like during this video it was more important to say it's a terrible product for newbies instead of saying hey newbies, this is a bad product but here is how you can make it work. As if the goal of the video was solely to create content proving your a pro showing how bad a product was and to advertise your other videos.
      Like of course, that's what you've gotta do to make money on this platform. It doesn't take much more to be more educational and informative when discussing something for newbies and then link in your other products.

      Well. Im sorry you felt that way. If this wasnt a review video then maybe i would try to "fix" someone elses product. The point was, you cant. You cannot fix it with what they provide. You have to replace everything i went over. Buy it seperately. And unfortunately, i didnt know before i bought this kit (i was asked to do so) that it was going to be as horrific as it was. My job is to make stained glass. If i didnt pour my heart and soul into massive and in depth videos on how to actually make stained glass, that attempted jab about me doing it for money, may have actually hurt my feelings. I am providing free content to STOP people from wasting there money. Stained glass art is not an art you can learn from a kit. You just cant. There is a reason i have specific videos PACKED with all the information you could ever need to do it. Again, im sorry you did not get what you were looking for.

    As a professional stained glass artist for more than 40 years and someone who has taught classes for beginners, it was sad to see a good idea so badly executed. I saw these stained glass kits in my local Michael's store and thought it was a neat idea. But I was extremely skeptical that a person without any knowledge of stained glass would find a kit like this useful. After watching your video, I think it would probably better to give them a plastic "paint by numbers" on "stained glass" kit to play with unless they really want to get serious about the craft and get a professional to help them.

    I’m so upset right now, I bought this kit but haven’t opened it yet, and course I can’t find the receipt to return it.
    I was looking at a flowers pressed in glass video, saw this video in my recommended and my heart sank immediately.
    Not only did I get the kit but the matching soldering iron as well, at least they were marked 40% off clearance. I was at Michaels yesterday and saw they restocked and almost got the crystals but thankfully didn’t.
    I don’t know what to do with it now, I would love to get into stained glass & buy the proper stuff but it’s too expensive for a new hobby I can’t spend much time on. I probably should have known better than to buy into this lie seeing as I am learning to make jewelry and was setting up my soldering station back when I bought this.

    The next video would be testing other stained glass supplies sold at Michael's and/or Hobby Lobby, that aren't part of this kit. They have soldering irons, foil, Flux, solder, and glass. Are any of them worth using, especially for a beginner. Could this be done by spending a little extra at the same store?
    And the final video would be replicating the end result, using your preferred tools, resources, and methods, and keep a running total of the cost. With maybe a few suggestions on cheaper alternatives that are still worth using.

      Oh gosh yea! You need to use stained glass solder. So that is a 50/50 for tinning then 60/40 for bead work. (The mix is the lead/tin ratio.) Sounds like you havent watched my soldering school video yet! Fun fact about leaded solder - a big reason it is used is that it doesn't break down over time (or it does so very slowly) unlike the non leaded solder which begins to degrade after a few years. Personal opinion the only reason to use unleaded is if its in a piece of jewelry so it is safe for constant contact with skin

The only difference was that the older lamp kit used lead came instead of copper foil. You still didn't know what tools were needed to finish the kit until you opened it, and of course a soldering iron and stand was not included, which was needed to solder the lead came joints. No telling how many budding stained glass artists were turned off to this artform over the years by poor quality kits.

    When some one says your product is over priced just link them to this and then them to do it themselves

    And this is the result of 'THE WAY THE WORLD IS'! It is so very sad the lack of care to others. It's all about the sales. 10,000 people buy this kit it is quite the profit. In their defense, I'll bet they will have the tools to make the pieces on their shelves by Christmas. I'm guessing they want to see what interest there will be

      I have zero credit to give them. The products included don't work. There is a list of products needed that you dont see until after you purchase it AND said list is missing tools still. 😂

    hi there! i recently started stained glass and bought all (i thought) the supplies. wondering if i need the stained glass pins or if i can solder my pieces without them? i’ve bought everything else i just keep finding one more thing. so far i’ve shaped all my pieces and have been avoiding soldering 😅

      Well I would recommend it for ease, but if your making small suncatchers that sit together well i wouldnt stress over the pins. And welcome to stained glass man!!!

    Not a waste of time. Extremely entertaining except for the occasional expletives. Hahaha. Good to know. Maybe I'll recommend these to customers that complain about my prices.
