I had a fella ask this same question not long ago and he tried it out and managed 6 fish on his first outing. Without sonar I would just pound the bottom 4-5 times and reel up drop down and repeat. Keep your bait moving and try to induce chases upwards and you will get hooked up!
is it common to just the tips ups with just the spool? I wanna maximize my chances haha, but i only have one rod to use for jigging. My others rods might not do the job for these beasts.
I walked out. There are a few ATVs starting to venture I’d still use caution if you are the ice thickness varies with the amount of snow and floodwater
I was wondering if Cole Lake had some decent ice yet! Getting pumped to get up there and catch some Lakers now after seeing this video! Got me pumped for some Ice Lake Trout !!!
@@weaversbentrods those champ swimmers are deadly. I used them a tonne on open water this year with the Berkeley Snap Jigs. The walleye cant resist the action. Wanna try them through the ice on lakers when I come up for the tourney
Hey Matt. We’re driving up to cold lake tomorrow. Is there enough ice for a diesel pickup yet? Are people driving on the ice? We’re planning to go to French Bay. Any info would be appreciated, thanks
Some people are starting to venture out but the ice varies quiet a bit. I had anywhere from 8 -15” at marina area today. Use caution if you do decide to drive out.
Awesome video Matt. It's got me even more excited to get out on the lake. When did you make this video? I'm trying to decide if it's worth going to French Bay and taking the ATV or walking on at the marina tomorrow.
@@weaversbentrods the guys from Cold Lake Ice Shack Rentals were out 4-5 days ago and had flood water at the marina and prov park. I think we're going to be at the marine tomorrow.
That was awesome Matt. It's awesome seeing them chase the bait on the screen. You made it look easy! I like that rod, looks nice and strong and maybe what I would need for musky. I'm not to familiar with lake trout, it's a protected species over here in Québec. Why do they burp like that when they're out of the hole? Great video! I thought (was sure) that I was already subbed to your channel..but now I'm subbed! 👊🎣
They are heavy rods. Best part about custom is we can make it how ever heavy a person wants it. The lake trout actually expelled the air pressure built up from their swim bladder as they come up from the depth. One of the few species that can do it. Without this they wouldn’t be able to swim back down
@weaversbentrods That's cool. I was thinking it had something to do with them being so deep and coming up quickly, but I didn't know they could expel the air on their own. For the rods I'll be checking the link in your description! Merry Christmas and happy holidays!
I can only hope to catch as many as you did that day . Looks like you found the magic hole . Looked like a couple of them were close to being legal length, pretty rare in my trips there . I think I've only kept 2 fish in the past 5 years from there .
@@weaversbentrods In my opinion for all its worth , there should be a draw system for Cold Lake for 1 55 to 65 ctm Laker . Those 75 and over ones should not be kept . Just imagine the size of the fish then . Sure it's fun to catch them smaller ones , but I would rather catch and release 40 pounders .🤯
amazing
wicked time out there that's for sure!

the fish were chomping. Hopefully we get some better ice soon
Matt’s back on the ice, Lake Trout fishing has begun! Nice work man 🎣
Just nice to be back out there. Happy holidays buddy!👊
Got some poledancers coming from the fishing hole, can't wait to try them,
Still my favourite lake trout lure out there. Something about it calls them in and gets them fired up and simply just catches fish over and over again
Hello,
Do you guide trips?
only in the summer!
@@weaversbentrods okay I would be interested. When are good times to come. Can I email you or send me contact info

Have any suggestions for the pole dancers so the trailing hook doesn’t snag on your line? I have trouble jogging with them without the tangle up
Honestly this is rarely ever an issue the odd time on a missed strike. Our set up is 20lb fluorocarbon tied directly to the bait.
Great video as always! Got me jacked to target some Lakers!!!
You know it! It’s that time of the year too the aggressive bite 👌 🔥
Nice work! Gotta place my order for a custom Screamer soon!
If your chasing lake trout or trophy pike you really can’t go wrong with one!
What kind of line are you using
Suffix 832 has never let me down! 20lb on my mainline with a 20lb flouro leader
Any tips or tricks for someone heading to cold lake without any sonar? Would underwater cameras help me out at all when fishing for these lakers?

I’m sure people do just lots of line if your fishing in 70fow or even deeper sometimes…
Always enjoy your videos Matt! Looks like a pretty decent day. Cant wait to get out there again.
Thanks Mary! Hopefully we can make it happen again this winter last year was a lot of fun

What size head spinner you using?
9/16 I believe is the heaviest they make and it works good. Sometimes the slower fall can trigger more bites too depending on the day
