FIX No Crank No Start IMMOBILIZER SEE MANUAL Volvo S40 Low Brake Fluid Stop Safely failure

  • READ ENTIRE DESCRIPTION. My brother was driving a 2006 Volvo S40 over some bumpy roads and when he got to his destination he was not able to restart the car. Basically the windshield wipers turned on at the highest setting and he received the following messages on the display. "Low Brake Fluid Stop Safely" and "Immobilizer see manual". When he turned the key it would not crank at all as if the starter was dead. The brake fluid was at the correct level and brakes worked fine.
When searching on-line some folks have said it could be a weak battery but that was not the case because it was fairly new. If you had a old battery you can usually have it tested for free at most auto parts stores.
The second thing some people said was that the ignition module that you put the key in can go bad. I did not think that would be it because supposedly if they go bad then you cannot take the key out. Also if you cannot take out the key if there is no power going to the module. So if you cannot take out your key then check the fuses, all connectors and then you may have to check and make sure the connector to the module is tight (in the dash). One my old S40 I did a test and when I unplugged the module I could not take the key out. One I plugged it back in I was able to take it out. Usually this would be tested last anyways.
The third thing most people mentioned is that there can be water or corrosion on the CEM or fuse box that is on the passenger side footwell under the dash. When I went to check on the fuses and relays to make sure that none were blown I noticed that one connector was not fully plugged or snapped in. When I plugged it in then went to start the car it was fine. Sometimes driving over bumpy roads will loosen the connection enough. Sometimes your passenger may kick it accidentally and loosen it. If your connectors are tight then check the fuses and make sure none are blown and that your relays are good. If they look good then check for any water damage or corrosion.
If you have any questions please see your dealer. These are just my 2 cents.
    Thanks
Below is a link to a 2006 Volvo S40 Owners Manual that shows you how to gain access to the Fuse panel on the passenger side. It is on page 181 but I would probably read the entire section.
    esd.volvocars.c...
Additional Notes. This is something that can happen to any of the following models and years unless Volvo redesigned something.
Volvo S40 / C30 / V50 / C70 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 and 2012 but depending on the model since some were not produced in each year. When the car wont start or has a No Crank No Start situation, the immobilizer message can be confusing at first because not everyone knows what can go wrong especially when you get other messages like the low brake fluid alert.
Get your replacement Volvo S40 parts on Amazon here: amzn.to/2GI2zQN and on eBay here: ebay.to/2s3c7kH.

I owe you a beer my man! This happened to me yesterday. 2 different mechanics had a look under my hood only to tell me i needed recovery. While waiting for the recovery vehicle i found this vid and all was revealed. I cancelled the recovery vehicle and made my way. Thank you for making this video!

Holy crap. THANK YOU for posting this. My wife and I just bought a Volvo S40 at auction for close to nothing and right after the first test drive (after winning it), it started exhibiting all sorts of crazy behavior to include: Windshield wipers turning on randomly with no way of shutting them off, signal lights randomly not working, "immobilizer check manual" message, various "fill fluid" messages, a problem where it didn't seem like it was getting enough gas when we tried to accelerate, and car occasionally starting, but not letting it shift out of park. Saw this video and checked the computer and sure enough, the one on the right was disconnected. Pushed that sucker back in and ALL of the problems appear to be resolved. We have no Volvo dealership here. One mechanic said it was showing signs of so many problems that he might charge us between $500 and $600 just for diagnostics and another mechanic just outright refused to look at it. Thanks again for this post. Just saved us both a lot of stress and headache.

Bro my girlfriend and I came home from a night out. We sat in car for a good minute and the lights came on. She’s the type to give me a case if she wasn’t in the car but she was. Needless to say we watched your video together and her car is back to regular operation

Thanks Adam! You saved me a whole lot of money, time and grief. I had the car go out last night and had to have it towed home. I found your video online, and I thought what are the odds of me having the same problem. I took a look under the dash and found that my connectors were loose as well, so I reseated them. I did have to lock/unlock the doors five times to reset the immobilizer and after that I was back in business. Thanks for sharing!!

Oh man!! I just want to thank you for this great and simple vid! This very problem has driven me to distraction these last few weeks and had so many breakdowns and recoveries because of it.
Today, with it stuck motionless and unresponsive on the drive I tried your 30 second fix and boom! Kicked in straight away. I just cannot believe that such an ongoing problem was solved SO quickly and without costing a bean!
Bless you my friend for taking the time to make and post this video.

Thank you. Mine showed the same error messages as in your video. Looked on various forums where people talked about changing the battery, changing the ECM fuse, etc. All very dubious, speaking as an Electronics Engineer.
Found the connector had come loose. Pushed it back in. Problem solved.
Stupid Volvo design putting the ECM in the foot well with a loose clothe cover over it, where feet can disturb the wiring loom and connectors.
Thanks again. You are a star.

I just fully cleaned car and got ready for epic Christmas driving, driving from UK to Holland on Christmas eve. Got in the car and got the same error message when I tried to start, also engine made a very funny low pitch buzzing noise. Turned off ignition and got the immobilizer message. Car didn't even turn over!! Looked at your video and had the same issue with the same error messages. Checked the connector in the fused box clipped it back in and hey presto the car started!! Got to love youtube and people like you posting these issues as I would have never of guessed that! My Christmas would have been ruined!! Awesome video/info. bought a 2005 V50 for the wife in Texas and drove back to Atlanta..no issues...ran it through the car wash and started noticing oil light flashing intermittently, then the brake error, then immobilizer and key would not come out. Another very grateful person here! You saved my Canadian bacon eh! A quick stop for gas and lunch and a big NO GO! I'm half way through an 800 mile trip to a wedding. I'm thinking my key got zapped or something but I checked my brake reservoir and it was full. So I'm thinking something is fishy here in Butte Montana! Probably not a Volvo dealer for miles either. Pulled up my go to mechanic advice source "RUclips". Sure enough the little connection was loose. Plugged it in and we were on our way! Thank you Adam!!!

I was driving my 2007 V50 this night when suddenly the wipers started to move full speed and allot of warnings popped up on the dashboard display.
The OBD module which was stil in my car learned me that I had the following error codes:
    - U0140 Network
    - U0118 Network
    - P2585 Engine/drive system
    - P242F Engine/drive system
    - U0104 Network
    - P1934 Engine/drive system
    - U0121 Network
These codes represent malfunctions of the; Airbag system, Body sensor system, Parking assist system, ABS Brake system, Skid control system, Wipers, RPM Gauge, Coolant temp Gauge, Accelerator pedal, and probably some more.
I started to google while waiting for the roadside service and found this youtube video.
After checking the connector I found it 0.5mm loose, this was enough to cause allot of problems.
Thank you very much for putting this on youtube!
this movie saved me allot of time and probably allot of money :)
    Best Regards,
    Yannic.

The "brain" is the fuse box underneath the dash on the passenger side. They call it the fusebox or CEM. bottom are the connectors and other side are fuses and relays.
I updated my description with a link to a 2006 Volvo S40 Owners manual and on page 181 shows you how to gain access to the fuses and relays.
Check if there is any water in that area because if water gets into the CEM then it can cause weird issues. Also check ground points. Also test your battery and clean the connectors.

Same message on my 'crank but no start' 2004 S60, message reads 'low break fluid', but the fluid level is maxed out!. The car was driven over cobble stone streets often, so I'm hoping this is my problem too. Great info thx!

Thanks for the tip - Volvo V50 2006 would not start. I had a few errors on the dash (Brake failure stop safely, power steering service rqd etc. When car was working error messages would appear then symptoms caused wipers, indicators, tacho, speedo, fuel gauge all not to work for a few minutes then they would come to life again for no apparent reason. I gave the connection a push and hey presto car started with no sign of fault messages.

THANK YOU for this. This same issue just happened to us. We live on dirt roads that are very bumpy. Unplugging and plugging back in the connectors worked on the first try. Thanks again!

+Melissa Barrick Duct tape, lots of duct tape over the connectors and tie the latches to the harness so they don't pop open. :D

Good video except I couldn't be 100% certain of the connectors you were pressing. It was rather dark.
I went hunting on my 2007 V50 and the CEM is supposed to be the same as that of an S40. In the area that you were pressing I could only see two connectors that sat next to each other. To me it looked like you were pressing on a big cable connector.
From the posts you have solved the headaches of quite a few people. Good job!

UK C70 same thing .. spent $100's with Volvo trying to find fault with no luck... looked under and re-sat the two connectors and it worked !!

Thank you. 3 hours in limp mode last night because I didn't know this. I just let the wipers at it. FYI: If in limp mode, clutch tentatively up through the gears and avoid using the throttle. It'll work up to a half decent speed. At hills use your judgement but the eng. mangt. should (with what might seem at first like about to stall) shudder onward by sending a little more fuel to the system. Steep hills beware of staying in 5th gear so for those maybe best to (again tentatively) proceed in what you judge best: 2nd, 3rd, or even first. You can make it a good distance. Remember, Its Swedish. They assume long distance drives are the norm. And in freezing weather. Hope helps someone if cant get out of Immobilizer/limp mode.
WARNING: Limp mode not only prevents driver-throttle control but also seems to dismantle turn signal and high-beam functionality. Use the above advice as a last resort. Best to follow instructions and Brake safely and stop safely and call for assistance if you cannot safely amend the issue yourself.

Are you getting the same symptoms? or are they different? If this doesnt work have your battery tested since I have seen some similar issues be caused by weak battery and make sure the battery terminals are clean on the battery and harness.

Great video I had to have my Volvo towed twice Can't help but think this must be a problem the engineers at Volvo design into their cars to keep their dealerships busy and making a lot of money Michael Moore could be busy the rest of his life with all the defective junk thrown at us My Volvo s40 also has a defective sunroof , can Volvo be made to fix that through recalls ? Not only my floors are soaking wet after each rain ,the leak of freezing cold water hits me right at the back of my neck when starting out the driveway and into dangerous traffic Thankyou Adam keep up the good work and thanks to u tube an invaluable tool for the average guy You should start up a radio show like the tappet bros have on npr I love their show every weekend

that happened on my car it said immediate service of some sort and the immobilizer message came on so I almost pissed my pants thinking it was going to have to be towed and have some expensive ass repair like it always does, but it took the key out and tried it a couple times and finally it went away and my car came on just fine.
