    You are a RARE breed. Been 'bent over' too many times in the distant past. For the last 25-30 years- I've been doing my own repairs including mounting & balancing my own tires, ball joints, struts and other suspension work, timing belts, brakes, regular maint, etc. It's guys like you that empower guys like me- thank you. Also; my 2003 Volvo S60 has over 347,000 miles- only had to replace wear items since new other than a wiper motor and factory defective DIM module (thank you ebay). The engine is strong, tranny shifts smooth and even the AC still works and NEVER had a recharge. STILL my daily. Anyway, again- I thank you; you're vids are fantastic.

      There was no diagnostics, that's the issue - they basically just looked up the codes and then looked up which parts to throw at it.... The reality is that very few places actually diagnose problems anymore, they just scan & throw parts at the problem.

    Same crap with dealers here in the UK.
    The elderly lady next door bought a used Fiat 500 2 years ago from the dealer.
    The car is now 4 years old with only 30k miles as she basically just drives around the village.
    Last service she got talking about possibly getting a new car and as if by magic a list of extra problems that need addressing gets added to the invoice.
    According to the dealer all the shocks are worn out and asked if she drives fast over speed bumps!
    I checked them over, the spring rate is fine and there are no leaks.
    Nice to see the dealer happy to rip off an old lady.

    Quick test for the PCV system put a glove over the oil fill if it blows up 90% chance the oil seperator is plugged, very common for high mileage Volvos. Great job thanks for posting!

    • @Halibrand
      @Halibrand 5 лет назад +14

      This ^ , I changed two oil seperators on V70s last week, a very common problem, if it has to much pressure then oil pressure problems can occur and before you know it your main crank bearings are shot. Hook up the Pico with a transducer and measure positive crank case pressure at idle. If its above 8mbar you should check and replace faulty oil seperator.

    • @stevevarholy2011
      @stevevarholy2011 5 лет назад +4

      Was going to say the same. I noticed the car was "hunting" a little on idle. Which is one of the signs that a PCV service is impending. Mine is just starting to do the same thing at 146k miles.

  • @kostelectronics
    @kostelectronics 5 лет назад +27

    Nice job Ivan! Thumbs up!!! But the PCV is a very common problem on these cars. They clogging up and then you have positive pressure in the system and oil leaks out on the oil-filler cap. You can put a nylon glove over the oil-filler-hole and see if the glove blows up. If not, no problem, if yes, then you should replace the PCV valve as well. BR from Switzerland, Matthias

      Defiantly a common complaint but not really ever much of an issue in my experience. You can get huge mileage between vent tubes so in worst case scenario just replace tubes every 150-200k miles.

    Great job Ivan. I absolutely despise companies that exist to screw over customers and bleed their wallets dry. • @marscruz
    @marscruz 5 лет назад +15

    Nice job Ivan. Your buddy will be very happy with his classic Volvo. I've only had one BMW, a 2000 325i that went through 5 window regulators in 50,000 miles. The drivers window twice. I liked the way it handled, it felt better the faster it was driven. I didn't like all the little things that went wrong. I traded it in on an Acura TL. That car has been totally reliable. Had a Toyota Camry before the BMW. Never a problem. I've had 3 BMW motorcycles. They are over engineered and require lots of special tools and procedures. Parts and labor are wallet killers. Luckily I can do most of my own work, unless a scanner is required. BMWs are for people with too much money. Japanese are good value for the money, at least the ones I've had. I've been tempted by Audi but haven't owned one since the 80's.
    Thanks for the entertainment. It's fun watching you track down problems and fixing them the best way possible while keeping the price fair. На здоровье.

    • @stevevarholy2011
      @stevevarholy2011 5 лет назад +1

      Ford did own them for this generation of wagons. The P2 design and engineering was already well complete before Ford took over, so the mechanics of the car are really solid and reliable. Fords influence was seen in the interior material quality and some of the electronics. The Flex, Edge, Taurus/Taurus X/Freestyle were all designed using the basic engineering of the P2. A testament to how good the platform engineering was.

    A $6,000 dealer repairs quote, you have squeezed down to not even $500?
    Perhaps the owner will stay sober all week, saving part of his fortune.
    I'm on my mid 50's and currently drive the same model, which as well I had the same issues @ first. Ending me paid up $980.00 to get it done by a Volvo dealer.
    These V70's are lil beast cruisers if you caress them.
    I keep driving cross country my V70, from Toronto to Vancouver island twice a year. Reving its pedals over 18 hours a day for 3 and half days until I get to Nanaimo.
    It's truly wonderful to get the naturally aspirited 5 cylinder engine roars. I even tried to pushed over 200m kph along the prairies and it is damn so smooth.
    Cheers and all the best dude!

Hmmm. I said let me think about it. The next alignment shop complimented me on the rebuild and aligned it with no problems.

    Good stuff Ivan! I love my '93 940 - for a small car, it rides nice - has some heft to it. Parts quality is second to none in the automotive industry. Some, but not all of the OE parts are just starting to fail after 26 years in New England, and 180k miles. It always fires up, runs strong (as strong as 114 HP at the crank can), and doesn't rust like a domestic! Only a couple blisters just starting on the lower part of the trunk, near the license plate. They used the best of everything building this car - probably why it was $24-LARGE back in '93! They weren't cheap, but you got your money's worth, unlike the junk they peddle today.
    After Ford got ahold of them in the late 90's, quality started dropping off (compared to the older stuff). Compared to a domestic, they're still a much better car overall. Once they get worn out though, the laundry list of problems becomes endless. Looks like that one there was well taken care of. Living in VA will help its lifespan, too - here in MA, stuff gets absolutely destroyed by 200k miles.
    Lesson learned - dealerships are crooks! 😂

    Just binge watched all three vids - excellent work troubleshooting this car! The Fuel Pump Module troubleshooting was top notch. You also bumped in to a few of the very common issues with older Volvos - fuel filter o-ring gland, PCV issues (google glove test to see if "pcv filter box" is clogged), oil cap gasket, control arms, bushings. I have 2005 S80 2.5T AWD with 180k miles and it has had those issues too. Easy peasy to resolve - like you showed. Lots of good content on RUclips for P2 Volvos. Also, FCP has been a great find for me too. BTW, they have lifetime free replacement for everything they sell - including oil and other fluids that can be returned. Awesome deal if you're keeping your Volvo for a while like most of us do. I also buy some parts from IPD Volvo and use Matthews Volvo forum to help troubleshoot and problem solve issues. Everyone wants a skilled and HONEST mechanic to work on their vehicles which clearly you are both. Nice work.👍👊

    I owned a 2001 Volvo S80 T6 and once it hit 80k miles, things began to go downhill. The local Volvo dealership was awful. Every single time I went to that dealership, the service bill was at least $1,800. And these service visits were every 2-3 months. The S80 was a horrible car. I ended up trading it for a 2007 Volvo S60 R AWD, which I had for 10 years and was one of the most reliable cars I’ve ever owned. I learned a lot about cars dealing with the S80, so when regular maintenance came up, I knew how to do a lot of it myself. The only major repairs I did on the S60 R were strut mounts(common issue on that generation S60) and the timing belt. FCP Euro is one of the best wholesale Volvo parts places. Nice video and nice work. You remind me that there are still kind and intelligent people still living in this country. Keep the Volvo videos coming!

    There's 3 Volvo technicians thumbing down this tutorial so far... excellent series specially for the haters thumbing down this.
    Post Data: You look good in a volvo, lots of room for the tools in the back, is a shame there's no 4X4 or enough ground clearance for winter adventures in the mountains. Damn! I feel like I am buying one! Thank you Ivan!

      I have an XC70, which is AWD and has pretty good ground clearance (8.5") - we take it off-road quite a lot.

    Nice job as always Ivan. The dealerships need to rethink how they do business. I am starting to hear this a lot on my end with HD. However their is hope. When I was instructing a class at Vision I had 2 Ford Dealer Techs attending and these guys were sharp. Not all dealerships are bad. 😉

    Dealers , as we all know, aren't the factory....they're factory authorised franchises who are there to serve 2 gods...one...the factory and their standards et two... the money making god.(which is why they're really in it as franchisees) I am truly glad they exist ...purely because the rest of us out here, bustin' a hump trying to make a living serving friends/family/townsfolk we know or dont know doing what we like to do and with pride in our work, will always be needed as long as Dick Turpin is out there workin at the dealership.....

    In our country was have a lot of Vovo's driving more than 600.000 miles. I have a friend he has a 850 van with 837.000 km. on it only once a new headgasket. With normal maintaining with an Universal garage car will never let you down.

      Never heard of an 850 "van"? Is it a brother to the 850 saloon?

    Great work Ivan I know a lot of volvo owners here in Arizona and tend to help them work on them when I'm home. Great knowledge you have provided. Also Volvo's are great cars! I personally own and drive an 1984 volvo 240 wagon that's also modified quite extensively, also it gets 25mpgs highway while spooling a turbo up to 14psi of boost

    Quick tip on the front A-arms - MevoTech (available at RockAuto) has front A-arms that are exactly the same as OE units for 20% of the OE cost. They look like they were made in the same factory as the welds are exactly the same, whereas all other aftermarket A-arms are completely different.

    The P2s are solid. The 850s were even more solid. I love my 2007 V70 2.5T.

    Oil separator box gets really plugged up very frequently but usually there is more build up under the oil cap. Just check crankcase vacuum to know if it's plugged or not. Should have small amount of vacuum at oil cap at idle. I like to just put my glove over the oil fill hole at idle and feel whether my glove is getting sucked against the hole.
    Nice comprehensive diagnostic!

    Very well done! Diagnosis in the dirt and cold - just like real life. Dealer diagnostics in this instance at least doesn't build confidence in OEMs and their dealer service networks.

    Funny thing, I googled Volvo pem...and it turns out it stands for Pump Electronic Module. Makes me think of the fuel pump driver modules on Ford's (same idea). The service writer should definitely go for a drug test.. lol
    Ivan you're the man. This customer should pay 1 Grand and say, Thank you Master!

    we both said 800 at the same time, though you really could get a lot more. It's like putting front complete struts on a 2014 tahoe repair shop wanted 580, found same shocks on ebay new 145 total did the job for 300. could have gotten 400 or more. less than an hour job. sometimes you just feel generous. Great video Ivan.
