After flying to an altitude of 39,045 meters (128,100 feet) in a helium-filled balloon, Felix Baumgartner completed a record breaking jump for the ages from the edge of space, exactly 65 years after Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier flying in an experimental rocket-powered airplane. Felix reached a maximum of speed of 1,357.6 km/h or 843.6 mph(Mach 1.25) through the near vacuum of the stratosphere before being slowed by the atmosphere later during his 4:20 minute long freefall. The 43-year-old Austrian skydiving expert also broke two other world records (highest freefall, highest manned balloon flight), leaving the one for the longest freefall to project mentor Col. Joe Kittinger.

I feel like this was a really under appreciated achievement for humans.
He jumped from the stratosphere, that's the highest someone has technically skydive. Not to mention, he did set a world record and a couple years before this was done, I don't think anyone had attempted this. So in my opinion, it's a pretty great achievement.
This guy knows whats up. Data. And a human breaking the sound barrier too.
Narrow minded replier.
That old guy at 1:17 is Joseph Kittinger, and he jumped from a balloon over 100,000 ft above sea level in 1960. So while a very impressive feat, it's not unprecedented. People have been doing these sorts of jumps for 60+ years. Felix just did it from a higher distance.
It's a pretty amazing achievement don't underestimate.

Fact, he didn't jump. His balls was so heavy it generated enough gravity to pull the earth towards him.

Imagine if he was wearing a wingsuit how far he could travel
i guess.. wingsuit can't accommodate such a high jump like that.
Probably not much because it needs density to create lift plus it will be very heavy creating a strong wingsuit that withstands supersonic flights
@@Sevastous But like you said, there's low density, so the supersonic speeds may not rip the wingsuit apart. There's probably some really funny aerodynamics happening near and beyond the speed of sound, but other than that, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

ada linda This jump was far from useless. He didn't just jump and parachute to the ground. It was a hell of a lot harder than Felix made it look. The team spent years working on the mission, working on things such as capsule and suit design, as well as overcoming problems such as flat spinning in freefall. This jump had several purposes:
Purposes:
1 - New parachute systems can be developed
2 - High altitude escape systems can be developed for pilots and astronauts.
3 - He proved we can survive a supersonic freefall from high altitudes.
4 - He proved the only way we can survive a supersonic freefall is with a drogue chute (the reason Felix survived is because he's an experience skydiver and knew what to do to control the flatspin).
5 - New next-gen, safer spacesuits will be developed based on Felix’s pressure suit.
The mission has already influenced changes in aircraft. For example, after analysing the atmosphere that was created inside the pressurized capsule, the altitude pressure inside the U-2 aircraft has been altered to reduce the effects of decompression sickness on pilots.
Felix made the jump look relatively easy due to his skydiving experience.
One more thing: The money spent on this mission belonged to Red Bull. Either they could spend it on this mission, which has scientific/medical/engineering purposes, or they could spend it on something that has little purpose other than entertainment value. I know what i'd rather have the money spent on!
This deserves way more likes!!!

The "I'm going home now" line was dope. This guy is beyond adventurous.
To the people saying "the earth is flat" or "this is fake you can't see any stars"; For starters, this took place during the day / on the sunny side of the earth. Both camera's and the human eye can't see stars when the sun is up because of the exposure. Secondly, cameras also cannot capture stars very well unless there is little to no other light in sight and they are placed on a stable tripod and a long exposure is taken etc etc. Also, the earth is a sphere.

Bella If you were to go up to space you would just float around because of 0 gravity this guy is just on the atmosphere I believe
MannikaGaming Uhh....The atmosphere has nothing to do with gravity. Gravity doesn't just stop at the atmosphere. Let me just put it this way, you could theoretically go as far as a couple hundred thousand miles out into space, just outside the point where the moon's gravitational strength is stronger than the Earth's, and if you didn't have sufficient velocity you would still crash into Earth one day. O

The funny thing is, people have known for hundreds if not thousands of years the Earth was spherical. A sphere is the only geometric shape known to man that casts a round shadow from every angle. During a lunar eclipse, the shadow of the Earth against the moon is always round. Therefore, the Earth is a sphere. If the Egyptians 3,000 years ago knew this without the internet, what does that say about flat trolls today?
SJ Willett You're referring to an observation and making an assumption that does not constitute a scientific fact. What is a scientific fact, is that the lunar eclipse has been recorded by the royal astronomical society (Mayfair London) to occur when both the sun and moon are visible to the same observer. This has happened on many occasions. If the sun and moon are observed at the same time during a lunar eclipse, the earth could not possibly be directly between the two creating the syzygy necessary for your assumption to be correct. Hence your assumption is scientifically proven to be incorrect. Do you have anything else?
@@timid3000 Are you serious? You can literally see the earth's spherical shape in this video!

retrorep My question is how did Felix Baumgartner survive the free fall? The temperature of the lower stratosphere decreases to nearly -60 celsius! The speed of the free fall exceeded 1,350 kmph. How could he survive that fall especially when he reached in the lower portions of the atmosphere with increased air resistance due to the increased concentration of molecules? Surely his suit did not have any sufficient workarounds to stop the air resistance.

i wonder how this little parachute can hold a so big pair of balls.
My question is: if the guy jumped out of a capsule hooked up to, essentially, a large balloon - what are all the people in "mission control" actually doing..? Why did they need so many, and what are they controlling? The wind? Did they "control" the release of the capsule from the crane-truck?
They all had purposes.
For example, one person, Kittinger, was capcom, talking to Felix through the ascent and through egress checks.
Another, Don Day, was a meteorologist in MC.
There were other engineers and scientists that could remotely cut the balloon away once he jumped, some monitored his vital signs and capsule systems too

Anyone can see the earth is round by using a compass, a map, and using the declination and an azimuth to find points. it has to be round or it wouldn't work. if you use this to find a point with a ten digit grid, you will be within 1 meter of the point you were trying to find. you don't have to go to space to prove it by looking at it from a distance.
a better way would to be standing at a lands end with a powerful telescope and watch a ship disappear but everything else in the distance still remains.
Or the fact that Australia is upside down so when looking at the moon from it it is upside down.

im honestly very curious as to why all footage taken of this jump was with a fisheye lens - why was that necessary in the least? you can clearly tell its a fisheye lens too.
0:46 distinct straight, or very very slight curve of the horizon
0:50 distinct, and very exaggerated i may point out, curve of the visual horizon
0:57 distinct curvature of even a face down shot to the earth
1:04 obviously bending of the visual horizon
1:14 an actual inversion of the visual horizon
just to show you that it is in fact a fisheye lens...but why exactly? seriously...why?
I'm not 100% sure if I'm right, but extreme things like this are captured with GoPro cameras becuase it's really stable and portable due to it's small size. AGoPro cameras are all fisheye lenses.
Jeffrey Huang I think they could afford something a little better than a go pro.
Most likely for the expanded FOV whilst only having a minor increase in lens size.
Also Jeffrey Huang Most of the footage is not from GoPro's

WOW, just look at New Mexico down below, it takes up the whole earth and it's shaded blue, especially around the edges, amazing!
lol lol lol lol
Those 'camera feeds' have also been debunked, they are fake CGI or GoPro cameras that curve the flat earth into a "globe".
With that amount of curvature it´s closer to 10%.
cekinxxx, because the ISS is much, MUCH higher than this man.
Wtf people think the earth is flat??? EVERYONE knows it's a right triangle...
+Saluteo no it's a Doritos you little fucking shit
It's a trapezoid
bullshit..its decagon
Dumbasses it's a Hexagon
isosceles
Just beaten moments ago by Dr Eustace, an executive at Google lol.
With no fanfare, no sponsorship gimmick, just pure science!
any proof or what?
00:45 No fish eye lens.
00:48 Then fish eye lens.
Next time no fish eye lens allowed.
🙄 The interior cameras are also equipped with a fisheye lens.
@@wrenengels7435 Then it would also be curved.
@@SeanThomasCross it is
@@wrenengels7435 You must not be seeing the right part. Flat as a pancake.
@SeanThomasCross All of the cameras are equipped with a wide-angle ( fisheye ) lens - some of the barrel distortion is more noticeable than other parts.
If you are referring to the bird's eye view of New Mexico, then it's just another shot similar to 0:56
Flat earthers getting triggered in the comments XD
I hope NASA bring one of the flat earthers into the space and see clearly what the earth looks like..
The Bends People who believe that the earth is flat don’t deserve to go to space.
0:46 omg its flat
@@thebends614 I do hope NASA brings one of these FLAT EARTHERS to space and let them record what they see with no fish lense to distort the truth. If the flat earther apologizes you win but if they are not under the illuminati/free mason oath then they are fucked.
0:46 - FLAT EARTH PROOF as shot with a non-fisheye lens! Compare it to 0:40 where its shot with a fisheye lens to make the earth look round. WAKE UP SHEEPLE.

what would a flat earther think about this? :/
flat-liners do not think
12 June: troll-blocking "colin"
1 July: troll-blocking "mary poppins"
Is that a trick question?
... Flat earthers don't think.
Where's the sea?why is new Mexico covering 1/4 of the globe ahhhh
so this is fake ???
I don't know but where is the sea?
That's ASTONISHING! 😮👏
Flat earthers must be going insane from this video lol
+John Doe Why? There is no curvature except the distortion caused by the fish eye lenses of the cameras... Check here to see a shot of a camera revealing 0% earth curvature: 0:46
See the earth inverted: 1:14. This video proves the earth is flat and not spherical... See Eric Dubay's content.
+M. Aaron ok so you think that whole chunk of land was all of earth lol??
+M. Aaron you know what fuck it! Just explain how seasons work on flat earth.
John Doe Well, seasons can be explained by different routes the sun does. Pretty simple. But you really ought to watch some of Eric Dubay's stuff or Rob Skiba's, or Jeranism's. Check out Eric Dubay's 200 proofs video.
+M. Aaron yeah you really ought to crack open a fifth grade science book...
“I’m bored of this space stuff”
“I’m going home now”
Sometimes u have to go up really high to know how small u r🔥
The students I taught loved this video. It was a cool introduction to the layers of our atmosphere.
