    After flying to an altitude of 39,045 meters (128,100 feet) in a helium-filled balloon, Felix Baumgartner completed a record breaking jump for the ages from the edge of space, exactly 65 years after Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier flying in an experimental rocket-powered airplane. Felix reached a maximum of speed of 1,357.6 km/h or 843.6 mph(Mach 1.25) through the near vacuum of the stratosphere before being slowed by the atmosphere later during his 4:20 minute long freefall. The 43-year-old Austrian skydiving expert also broke two other world records (highest freefall, highest manned balloon flight), leaving the one for the longest freefall to project mentor Col. Joe Kittinger.

    @samcdigweed 10 лет назад +53

    ada linda This jump was far from useless. He didn't just jump and parachute to the ground. It was a hell of a lot harder than Felix made it look. The team spent years working on the mission, working on things such as capsule and suit design, as well as overcoming problems such as flat spinning in freefall. This jump had several purposes:
    Purposes:
    1 - New parachute systems can be developed
    2 - High altitude escape systems can be developed for pilots and astronauts.
    3 - He proved we can survive a supersonic freefall from high altitudes.
    4 - He proved the only way we can survive a supersonic freefall is with a drogue chute (the reason Felix survived is because he's an experience skydiver and knew what to do to control the flatspin).
    5 - New next-gen, safer spacesuits will be developed based on Felix’s pressure suit.
    The mission has already influenced changes in aircraft. For example, after analysing the atmosphere that was created inside the pressurized capsule, the altitude pressure inside the U-2 aircraft has been altered to reduce the effects of decompression sickness on pilots.
    Felix made the jump look relatively easy due to his skydiving experience.
    One more thing: The money spent on this mission belonged to Red Bull. Either they could spend it on this mission, which has scientific/medical/engineering purposes, or they could spend it on something that has little purpose other than entertainment value. I know what i'd rather have the money spent on!

      OH! Oh my friend. I just found about that too a few weeks ago. There is a whole group of people, with bullshit documentaries on youtube, that can "prove" the Earth is flat. It is the most mind numbing thing ever. And even if you hit them with real facts, real science, they will still disprove it with childlike opinions. It is the worst thing. Oh and their entire belief banks on the notion that we have never been into space... ever.

    To the people saying "the earth is flat" or "this is fake you can't see any stars"; For starters, this took place during the day / on the sunny side of the earth. Both camera's and the human eye can't see stars when the sun is up because of the exposure. Secondly, cameras also cannot capture stars very well unless there is little to no other light in sight and they are placed on a stable tripod and a long exposure is taken etc etc. Also, the earth is a sphere.

    The funny thing is, people have known for hundreds if not thousands of years the Earth was spherical. A sphere is the only geometric shape known to man that casts a round shadow from every angle. During a lunar eclipse, the shadow of the Earth against the moon is always round. Therefore, the Earth is a sphere. If the Egyptians 3,000 years ago knew this without the internet, what does that say about flat trolls today?

    • @timid3000
      @timid3000 5 лет назад +9

      SJ Willett You're referring to an observation and making an assumption that does not constitute a scientific fact. What is a scientific fact, is that the lunar eclipse has been recorded by the royal astronomical society (Mayfair London) to occur when both the sun and moon are visible to the same observer. This has happened on many occasions. If the sun and moon are observed at the same time during a lunar eclipse, the earth could not possibly be directly between the two creating the syzygy necessary for your assumption to be correct. Hence your assumption is scientifically proven to be incorrect. Do you have anything else?

    Humanity needs stuff like this more. We live in a time where we are more divided than ever. We are drifting down a dark path.
    We need more light in our lives. The world desperately needs to know life is not as bleak as it seems. I hope more people come back to this video. This was a monumental moment in human history, not just because this was an insane world record, but because a single man had managed to bring the entire world together to witness this one moment. For 4 minutes, even if it was by just one live stream, the entire world was on the same page.
    I hope more people come back to this video. Stop the fighting. Stop the wars.

How could he survive that fall especially when he reached in the lower portions of the atmosphere with increased air resistance due to the increased concentration of molecules? Surely his suit did not have any sufficient workarounds to stop the air resistance.

    • @samcdigweed

      There were other engineers and scientists that could remotely cut the balloon away once he jumped, some monitored his vital signs and capsule systems too

    0:46 distinct straight, or very very slight curve of the horizon
    0:50 distinct, and very exaggerated i may point out, curve of the visual horizon
    0:57 distinct curvature of even a face down shot to the earth
    1:04 obviously bending of the visual horizon
    1:14 an actual inversion of the visual horizon
    just to show you that it is in fact a fisheye lens...but why exactly? seriously...why?

      See the earth inverted: 1:14. This video proves the earth is flat and not spherical... See Eric Dubay's content.
