I started as a part timer in school with no knowledge or experience as a mechanic. I just swept floors and did odd jobs till one of the mechanics took pity on me and showed me how to work on the equipment. Because of that simple gesture I was able to move up the chain and be a full time valued mechanic. So I gotta say, be willing to teach and be patient with the younger guys and don't just blow them off.

I've been thinking about going to school for this myself. I was able to fix an electrical issue in my car that an actual mechanic said was not fixable (maybe lazy, who knows) and I did my own brake job with a scissor jack and hand tools. Not that this is impressive at all but I goddamn enjoyed it. I like working by myself on technical things, probably adhd related but damn. I wish I'd have known i liked this before I became an stupid esthetician/makeup artist. Too many people to talk to everyday.

My first interview as a newbie was an actual 8 hour shift tryout under the watchful eye of the lead mechanic. I basically did his work the hole day while he just stood watch and took notes. At the end of the day we all sat down to discuss the day all he said at the meeting was “he takes his sweet time but hire the SOB” and left. Best lead I ever had.

I started going to the dealership that I work now, in Jan of 2019 I went in and asked if they had any positions and was always polite and respectful, filled out an application and met some of the service writers and stuff then they told me they didn’t need anyone, I thanked them and left. Came back in feb and asked again and talked with them still respectful and stuff, and I came back in March and they asked when I would graduate and stuff. Then in May I got a call from them asking for me to come in. Got hired in on spot and I’ve worked there since, I think it goes a long way being respectful and honest!

If I like what I see and hear then, I offer them the job and go over benefits. Way to many time wasters out there and my time is very valuable.

Later this year I’m gonna be taking two ASE test. My goal is to take all 10. Dealerships come to our school to talk about the field and how they’ve hired plenty of students from my school. Next week the automotive classes are having a career fair we’re a bunch of dealerships come to look for hires. And right now during COVID every dealership you go to is looking for techs. Least to say I took a drug test, and hopefully start Monday as a entry level tech

Lots of great advice for interviews for new and experienced technicians. I have been a tech for 25 years now, but also have management experience. I had a guy start an interview by putting his feet on my desk & lean back and ask what starting pay was. Needless to say that interview ended before it began.

Liked the info. I’m 27, been doing this for a little over 4 years. My only disagreement is dress code. I always wear a button up shirt and tie, ever since I was 15 applying for fast food jobs until now. I believe it makes you look like you take it serious. I’ve been complimented before because of it.
Maybe I got the wrong mentality when it cones to that. I just thought dressing up for a interview was a no brained.

Kids now a days are finding “role models” in those who have the greatest influence in their lives, which used to be parents and successful adults. However today, the role models seem to be the rappers in the next top hit, and the people on youtube with the most subscribers, which all play video games and a lot of them have a lot of subscribers because of their “could care less” attitudes. Luckily for me, my parents set me straight from the beginning, every employer has been very impressed with how I display myself during an interview. I am not trying to brag by any means, but trying to shed light on the problems of my generation, a generation that seems to be full of hurt feelings and the easy way out of every situation in life. I am looked at weirdly by my co-workers that are the same age as me because I am all about honest work and doing exactly what the company hired me to do, and not look for the easy way out. Just remember, there are many kids like me who actually care to perform for a company, because the way I see it, a great word from a previous employer means more to me than an easy dollar!

Its crazy I've never had an interview where I didn't get hired on the spot im only 23 years old but I feel like basic conversational skills can help
Tip one 1. Make good eye contact (i don't mean stare into there eyes uncomfortably but when they are talking do look at them and acknowledge what they are saying)
Tip 2. Don't lie about your experience (it will be very known that you don't know what your doing when you get into the shop and have a head up your ass)
Tip 3. Personal hygiene personal hygiene personal hygiene (brush yo nasty ass mouth and put on deodorant)
Tip 4. If it doesn't make dollars it doesn't make sense (do your research on the job your applying for know what pay to expect know what is expected of you)
Tip 5. Don't flex (don't flex your fancy tools, experience or your ASEs they have your resume they see what you wrote down if they care they will ask you)
Tip 6 and also the final tip. Be respectful (yes sir, no sir, yes mam and no mam go a long way just be a nice human)
