The clinic finally starts, the place is packed to the rafters, and Max is brilliant. At one point he stops, talks about “Mr. Hi Hat”, and then calls out Steve Smith to perform it! What a fantastic evening. Exactly! I always have gotten a sense from him that he's extremely aware of the pitch or shall we say melodic content - whether from pitch, timbre or whatever source - of his chosen medium. His rhythms are also more melodic to me than other great drummers, if that even makes any sense to say - they seem to breathe and move more like sax lines than other drummers. I like thinking about such things while listening to him on, say, "Saxophone Collosus." It's interesting, here, to listen to him artificially limit himself, both with just the hat and with lack of a surrounding tune - and still be himself. He'll always be my favorite drummer.

It’s all joy indeed but I think you know who the master of hi hats Nd drums was and in my eyes always will be That’s the worlds greatest drummer Buddy Rich
Buddy Rich was great - but not the greatest of all time (as He Himself declared). Why? Because there IS no greatest drummer of all time. Period. There are a small group of REALLY great drummers who showed the way (Sidney Catlett,Chick Webb, Buddy, Max, Mel Lewis, Ben Riley, Keith Moon, Bill Bruford, Terry Bozzio, Mike Clark, Johnathan Blake, etc etc etc).
Steve Carter/Seth Gauby You have to have an appreciation of the technical intricacies being performed to understand it. Keeping in mind it is a YT video, Mr. Roach is demonstrating how drummers manipulate various tones within specific rudiments to create the sounds you may be familiar with once integrated into popular songs. Only, he's doing it on less than 3% of the total instrument with effortless execution using a specific rudimentary cadence.
One of the most amazing concerts I ever got to see was a Max Roach trio in December of '79. I think Cecil Bridgewater was with him, but I don't recall the third party. During the show, Mr. Roach did a variation on this solo. At some point, he lost (or perhaps meant to drop) one of his sticks, and continued using the index finger on one hand. The concert as a whole was characterized as "a drum clinic" by a friend at the time who was also there. He certainly showed people how it was done. It was magical!
Interesting to read. I saw him here in Rochester at the Eastman School of Music in 1990 and prior to doing this he spoke of a clinic or convention (I forget) he performed at which included several drummers such as Art Blakey ("brought his thunder"). Then he mentioned another (again I forget, but I assure you I'm not making this up) whose performance this was based on which brought down the house. Wish I could remember who - some help, anyone?

@Max William Lauf As unlikely as it might seem, a hi-hat cymbal absolutely can keyhole (more like the center hole becomes slightly larger and lopsided). It's happened to me before.
It's just a raw lathe style with an "aging" colorant made by Istanbul cymbal company. What's so exotic about that? If he had two 22" ozone style ride cymbals as hats, then I'd get you point. It is a technique used primarily in Jazz and Polka music. GOD HAS ALL OF THE BEST DRUMMERS!!!
RIP!!!
Pure magic! Wonderful!
Master Roach
“ I bought the whole hi hat, I’m going to use the whole hi hat
no top felt??
smart thinking, you don't need that
Perfect way to destroy cymbals...
Have to agree, I quite liked the sound without any felts on the hi hat stand or on the clutch.
Top cymbal might broke, becouse it no longer have free movement. The sound is awesome tho.
@@betulaobscura lmao no
@Max William Lauf As unlikely as it might seem, a hi-hat cymbal absolutely can keyhole (more like the center hole becomes slightly larger and lopsided). It's happened to me before.
Style and complete confidence. The Max.
I notice top hat is smaller diameter.
He’s always played (at least everything I’ve read and seen) 14” top over 15” bottom.
I do the same; gives more options/ sounds; a nicer chick!! @@jamesrabic5380
The first ever man to play breakcore hat patterns
A legend playing a legendary magical city (Istanbul) cymbals
Steve Smith took this to the next level.
A true master!
wow that was amazing! dude is awesome!
I'm going to cover this in a music store. Then make them watch the video when they say I'm playing gibberish.
Hi-hats off to you, sir!
Never ever seen a hi hat like that, in fact the title should read. “ Plays some odd bits of metal.”
It's just a raw lathe style with an "aging" colorant made by Istanbul cymbal company. What's so exotic about that? If he had two 22" ozone style ride cymbals as hats, then I'd get you point. But I think this is the same set of hats that Nick Menza played for a bit in the 2000s. I know menza swapped to their brilliant lathe cymbals at some point, but stayed with Istanbul for a long time. Possibly through his untimely expiration.
@@jamesmcgrath849 to the original commentors credit it does appear to be a 13 top on a 14 bottom which is unusual
@@gofigure84 He could have downsized, but back in the '60's when I copied his set-up, he used a 15" and 14". Had great "clap", but man could they chew up the sticks.
@@gofigure84 Not ludacrisly rare though. My jazz band in HS did it, so did my college. I guess I look at it like plays who primarily play with the butt of their drum sticks: you don't see it every day, but you do see it regularly.
@@gofigure84 but not unheard of by any means (Thanks to this very man in the video lol). Acting like it's breaking one of the Drum Commandments is ridiculous and just makes him sound like a looky-loo.
In a world without youtube , internet, social media etc. How did this guy land this slot on this show ? Did he play the circuits for years ? Just him and his hi-hat.
Omg...get an f'ing clue. Obviously u r not a musician just a clown troll.
@@audieconrad8995 wasn't a troll man. Genuine question. People get noticed these days because of social media. Im just curious as to how things happened back then. Chill out.
stevie o'kane the man was one of the greatest postwar jazz drummers. Played with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, etc. Etc.
Always in demand for shows or recording gigs.
All the great drummers would demonstrate how you don’t need a full kit to make magic.
This inspired me to join Dream Theatre as a hi-hat man.
No idea how this video found me but I love my Istanbul hihat a lot as well
The one thing I love about being a drummer is you can create rhythm out of anything. You just need sticks or your hands.
The one thing I like about the comments is I figured drummers would be here.
@@ericparrish1515 we may b underrated and least respected, but there is no band without a drummer or rhythm.
still love his work!!
Good, but check out the video of this same solo from when Max was about 30 years younger. It's much more impressive.
why?
He was in his prime.
@@rthmjohn??? In his prime with what??? Technique? Musicality, or even style and look?
I hope hes still alive, I would like to see him play one day.
Sorry he died in 2007
Can’t say I really dig this.
Big Rock
Sure is.
@Big Rock the dude abides
00:20 It's So Easy by GN'R but on hi hats
0:42 "i can feel it, calling in the air tonighht"

Great playing, absolutely strangest hi hat combination right?
Looks easy, right? Try to get that feel. Impossible.
No, man. That don't look easy anyway at all.
Listen to the masters and practice, practice, practice.
The most difficult thing of it all it's achieve that it seems easy! When it's not!
Max Roach was a undoubted genius artist but also a tireless campaigner for civil rights too. If you don't know about him and you call yourself a drummer, then you need to get with it.
Those that expect more as they put it don’t understand it
? This is complete trash. There's one ''uncommon'' technic and he didn't even master it.

The moronic comments leave no doubt there are many non-musicians watching the video.
...agreed
@@dujanaabdul-nur7647 The respect for him by musicians who know his real skill does not nullify the fact that what he was doing was like having a class for elementary school kids showing them how a hi hat sounds.
@@genez429 He was playing some pretty intense stuff. If that kind of 'basic demonstration' was all of what you heard, then congratulations on having an elementary-school level understanding of drumming. This was a very cool video, with a fine message to it.
Most young guys listen with their eyes.
Un buen bateria, da gusto de ver a personas tocando que gusten tanto al cabo de los años , siga gustando esa forma de tocar.
Whys the top hi hat so small it's like hes playing a 13' top and a 14' bottom
It is a technique used primarily in Jazz and Polka music. The idea is to trap air towards the center of the cymbals while allowing vibrations to pass along the edges which speeds up the frequency and varies the tonality creating a simultaneous high and low sound that can be manipulated when striking the cymbals in different places.
@@rodneytruitt9566 Now that's what I call an answer...
@@spicypineapple It could be a recommendation from his stick maker. /The lower cymbal will "eat" sticks/.
I wish I could have met this cousin, awesome musician
" Hey buddy, you know the camera's recording right?"
Max Roach could make a bunch of plastic 5-gallon buckets sound like a $8,000 drum kit!
Sensacional a diversidade de pegadas.
Incredible max roach 🥁🔥
I love all the snarky comments from people who 1) clearly have no idea who Max Roach is 2) have never picked up a drum stick in their life and 3) clearly can't understand stick dynamics and the resulting musicality as shown in your ignorant and snarky comments.
"I don't understand and therefore I am going to insult to hide my lack of understanding"
yeah sure stick dynamics can be tricky and he may have been influential, but that doesn't make it good
Bottom line though, if it sounds shit to someone who knows nothing then it doesn't belong in mainstream entertainment
@@oliver.douglas to you. I think it's amazing.
@@doublestrokeroll Yeah me too, i think its great, what i was getting at is our mate who made the comment said that these people are ignorant "they don't know who he is", " never picked up a drumstick", "clearly can't understand stick dynamics and the resulting musicality" (very pretentious statement btw), all i'm trying say is that none of that matters because its all subjective.
@@stevecarter8810 it's... not in mainstream entertainment though? It's a niche youtube clip of a TWENTY FIVE YEAR OLD PUBLIC TV PROGRAM. What are you even talking about? How about, "if you know nothing, don't speak?"
This is one of those videos that I find fascinating but can't show to people because they won't get it.
Esto me demuestra que no se necesita unas 50 piezas de bateria para tener un buen solo
Different sized hi hats I bought a kit a while back with different size hihats still got them might dig them out again
Obama when he has a lot of free time
the different-size-cymbal thing is awesome. the no-felt thing gives me night terrors.
