I'm black. In general, this is so true: we don't get in the water. For us women, our hair will get ruined, and it takes forever to redo, and for the fellas, it's all about the "look cool factor"🤣
I was married to a black woman with 4 black kids. We moved to the beach in Delaware this past summer. After being there for 5 weeks, and not once going to the beach except to go surf fishing twice; once with the 2 boys, the second time with one of the boys, I realized we were NEVER going to go to the beach! We might as well have stayed in Northern VA!
😂you gave it the good college try. I’m half black and used to have no problem going to the beach but for some reason the older I’ve gotten it’s just a no for me. More for fear of what’s in the water than anything else. Pools are fine though
This is hilarious! My gym teacher in high school didn’t even get in the water when we had swim class. She walked around the pool in full makeup with her hair done and got mad at me when I almost drown because she thought she was going to have to come in to get me 😂😂😂
I don't necessarily think this is a black thing. I had a white PE teacher in high school, and he never got in the water during swim class either. Doesn't have a fear of water or anything like that. He could swim too. I was shocked. To me, it's unacceptable that a swimming teacher doesn't get in the water. It does not inspire confidence for the kids who don't know how to swim.
This is utterly fascinating. It's a completely foreign social experience to what's happened in my life. A pool party is all about the pool and GETTING IN IT! Standing around the pool dressed up is fine, but then it's not a "pool" party, it's just a damn party! Ha! I am black too!

We had to push people in at our pool parties. And when I was in Jamaica even the lifeguard was amazed at how far out I could swim. Jakes would say about me, "(Patois accent)That boy swim like fish (pronounced feesh)😂"
Lol, I was that rare kid that would jump in. my grandmother would take my sister and I to the Salon before a family reunion. I would be so excited to get to the pool and I would hear the dreaded words, "You're not getting in that pool after I paid to get your hair done"! 😮💨 So I had to sit at the edge of the pool and dangle my feet. I started requesting to not have my hair done so I could get in the pool, my request was always denied. 😒
I attended a James Brown concert in the late 60s and a black comedian opened the show. He told some jokes about white people, which were hilariously funny, and I could see some black people looking my way to see if I thought the jokes were funny, too. Yep, they were. As someone else said, "Funny is funny."
I swam at a beach for the 1st time just last year. I took my 2 nieces and their friend to SC. They were actually swimming like they were in a pool. I said, “if they’re not afraid of Sharks I’m not going to be, so I swam. But right before that 4 Black women were right at the water just chillin. They then got up, put their feet in the Ocean and started taking pictures. I cracked up!😂 Dude you’re hilarious😂
When they went to kick him out he should have said "alright, get in here and escort me off the premises. Cause I know you ain't gettin your ass in here." 🤣🤣
I remember talking to a black friend about the beach, sunblock or something and he was like " black people don't lay out at the beach". Mind blown as I realized its mostly true! I don't lay out to tan, it just feels good but I never see black people lay out much lol
I knew lots of black women in the army that would lay out at the beach or pool. One girl I worked with loved sunbathing, said she didn’t have as much issue with dry skin when she tanned.
Dang I just learned to swim at the age of 42 lol. I love being in the pool. The deeper the more fun it is. I swam in a lake last year for the first time. This year I’m learning to canoe. I want go far in the ocean! That’s totally different water and buoyancy. The lake I was in was man made and they drain it to clean it plus it was only 15ft. I hate I waited so long to learn to swim. I swim year round and lost 35 pounds in one year not trying because I love to swim. I encouraged my mother to learn this year because it helps with arthritis. I’m paying for her to take private lessons. We will see how it goes!
What's funny is my first pool party no one was swimming either and I'm black. I got it and everyone looked at me like I was crazy. I think 3 ppl actually got all the way in. everyone else sat on the edge with their legs in the pool
