Were always given the impression that Haughey was a corrupt , menacing and generally bad Taoiseach , but just look at the way the audience greeted him . Haughey was despised by the establishment but enjoyed popularity with regular people . I am not so sure about that. The 1980's when Charlie was at his pinnacle were one of the worst decades in the Republic since the foundation of the Irish state. The country was beset by high inflation, high unemployment, and high immigration. While in the North the Troubles seemed non ceasing, violent, and intractable. Remember the overwhelming sadness of the hunger strikes in 1981. I am not saying this was all Charlie's fault who by the way was extremely clever in my opinion, but he could also be chameleon and devisive at a time when the country needed integrity above all else.
