- It was such a treat to be able to fly in this piece of history.... A ford Trimotor. the aircraft that started commercial aviation.

This has quickly become one of my favorite channels!
Wow thanks a lot!
Agreed. it's popped up on my feed a couple times from a video I watched a while back I guess but I decided to watch one that popped up the other night and it's all i've been watching the last week with the exception of a handful of other videos including a couple of the sailing side.
Yeah man. Me too. I love GA aircraft and this channel goes into extensive back stories on the pilots and planes. Which I like.
Bill Stout who`s designs evolved into the Ford Trimotor was our Illinois Model Aero Clubs tech advisor in 1911-12.
I flew in that plane as a kid when it was still in commercial operation. It would fly from Port Clinton Ohio out to the islands in Lake Erie. What a fun ride.
I had the privilege of flying on the Ford Tri-motor as a kid in the early 70's. It's nick name was the tin goose. Beautiful plane brings back memories.
My first time flying was in a Trimotor in the early 1960s in Independence, MO. My uncle took me to a nearby empty field where they were selling rides for $5 (I think). I was hooked immediately. It was so thrilling to look down on my hometown like it was a diorama.
Bobby & Laura, I can't imagine anything much better than to taking a ride in this aircraft OR possibly in a blimp! The Captain was really cool and its obvious he is loving his retirement job! BTW, so nice to see Laura in this posting.
WoW! I'm definitely jealous. You know... That's the Holy Grail of aviation. 😎
Not just the holy grail of aviation but also of Ford as well. I never knew Ford built aircraft until I saw this plane. I'm a hardcore Ford fan so this is a dream to fly on one of these.
so I'm thinking the $70 price tag and how much the Uber ride will cost to get out to that airport will definitely be worth it.
@@mathewmclean9128 Growing up at an airport I saw an article on them in a magazine probably 30 years ago. I was a teenager. Anyway, I fell in love with them then and even more when it showed up in the Indiana Jones movie. I don't have to ride but one day I'll actually put my hands on one. Do a good walk around yu know?
That’s incredible- makes a DC3 look modern. Love the mix of modern and old. Really enjoyed watching this channel lately - keep it up!
I got some right seat time and was allowed to maneuver for all but departure and landing phase......
A thrill of a lifetime for a long time pilot without multi time at all.
Just listen to those radials. I bet the video just doesn't do it justice. Incredible.
It does not do it any justice.
It;s quite remarkable to experience the noises this airplane makes.
Flying in a Ford Trimotor is like being a part of history. The infancy of aviation was obviously not about speed but the convenience of exploring an alternate form of transportation which evolved into the airplanes that are flown today. That must have been the ultimate thrill of that era! Have A Great Christmas and A Happy New Year! You earned it.
So cool! I was lucky enough to fly on one of the EAA owned Tri-Motors a few years ago. Was awesome!
Brandon Wright How did it sound in that awesome plane?
I don't know who was smiling more, you or Laura. Really nice piece of work. Great to see you enjoying yourself and doing so well. You have a real gift for storytelling. Now, relax a bit and enjoy your holidays.
I've flown aboard this exact a/c and it was a blast. Much smoother ride than you might expect. If you ever get the chance, take a ride. You won't regret it.
Man, how impressive how quick they could rotate even with a plane full of people. Amazing.
Back in the late 90's I was a weekend volunteer at EAA's Pioneer Airport. Capt. Welch is a good friend of mine. And while I've never flown in that particular Tri-Motor, I have taken several flights in her sister airplane, NC8407. Including a few in the right seat. I highly recommend it.
I got to take a hop in one of the EAA’s trimotors up at Oshkosh about ten years ago. They let me go up and sit in the cockpit when we got back on the ground. It was an incredible experience ! 😃
Best Flying Doodles yet. Amazing airplane. Learned a lot. Nice to see you there together.
This was the first plane I flew on back in 1972 to Put-in-Bay. Pretty cool. If I remember correctly, a few weeks after my flight, another Tri-Motor had a water landing in Lake Erie!
Great Video... would love to learn even more about this iconic plane. Thanks for taking us along!
In 1976 American Airlines had a contest for the Cub Scouts. In each district each pack/troop had to build a large model of an airplane. The winning pack would win a trip for 3 to New York City for the 4th of July. In Louisville, KY my pack won! Since the plane was built at my house, I helped build it and was chosen to do the presentation to the judges, explaining how it was built. So I got to go to New York City for the fourth (and my birthday July 3rd) without my parents. The plane we built---A Ford Tri-Motor in American Airlines paint scheme.
My older brother Tom and I got to fly on this trip motor when they visited Fresno Ca, had a great flight. $75.00 for 35 minutes. Worth every minute. Couple old guys in our sixtys, acting like kids again. Would DEFINITELY fly again on this bird.
As a kid, growing up in Southern California, we had a neighbor who was an old man then. His wife showed me a scrapbook of her husband's early career.
He was a Barnstormer in the first years of aviation. What he flew was a Tri-Motor. His main competition his James Doolittle! Word of the tricks he did reach the Ford plant and the folks there did not believe the stories. So they sent people to watch him. They confirmed his performance.
His name was Hal Johnson. I don't know if their is any info out there on him, but perhaps you could ask the guy who took you up, if he has very heard of him? Let me know if you find out anything!
There are several articles that come up when you Google Harold Johnson Ford tri-motor pilot. It also mentions there are several on RUclips.
I flew in the City of Port Clinton during its tour of the Southeast last year when it visited Venice, FL. We cruised at about 1200’, blazing along at about 85 knots (lol). I can only liken it to riding atop a huge condor... very smooth. I videoed the entire 20 min. flight. One of these days, I'll post it to YT. I hope to occupy the copilot's seat on my flight this year. My dad (yes, my dad) flew Trimotors (4s and 5s) in the late 20s/early 30s. I passed along several articles and photographs to 'Capt.' Ross, the pilot of the 'Port Clinton'. He was, to say the least, amazed. I’ll bring some more memorabilia to him (or whomever pilots her) this year.
I had the unique honor of flying in her when they came through for Cavalcade of Planes at Clow (1C5) a while back. Pure decadence inside her, lovely aircraft. Glad you had a chance to experience it! (Radial engines rock)
I got to sit right seat in the cockpit when the Port Clinton one came through Albuquerque recently. What a great flight! Pilot let me take controls for a few minutes too. It was incredible.
Love the sound of those radial engines! Thanks for sharing.
When your in it taxing the burned AV Gas floating thru the cabin is intoxicating in a wonderful sort of way ;)
Gorgeous aircraft, gorgeous video quality. Well done!
Thank you so much!
That’s really cool. You got some good shots of the flight. My kids and I were able to take a flight on one here at KHEF about 4 years ago. It was really fun.
I just watched this one again, and realized last time I forgot to say it's absolutely awesome! I do love your videos, and seeing one with a true legend of the skies is just great!
Very cool flight Bobby and Laura, that looked like a lot of fun.
My wife and I flew in this plane from that same airport back in Oct 2018. Smooth as silk takeoff, flight and landing. What an experience that I'll never forget. The engine strut was hiding the gauges directly mounted on the struts from your out the window shot. I sat in the second row seat and had a perfect view of the gauges. I think it had Fuel pressure and Oil temperature gauges on the struts. A pilot would need very good vision to be able to read those for sure.
Glad to see this channel exploding! Keep it up guys!
There is a Ford Tri-Motor on display in the Evergreen Museum near Portland Oregon. It's a fabulous museum. There are lots of special aircraft there, even the Spruce Goose.
They sold it
Grace and beauty 👍 top video and merry Christmas .
I have flown on this exact aircraft. One of those “must-do’s” for avgeeks. You sat in the exact seat I rode this airplane in.
Such a interesting bit of history, thanks for sharing 👍🏻
I got to see this plane up close a couple years ago when I was working a job washing airplanes in Oklahoma City. We would travel to the smaller airports washing airplanes for various clients and one day we pulled into Sundance (the airfield in this video) and we walked into the hangar and we see this thing sitting there. I had no idea what it was when I first saw it but it was super cool to get to look at it up close and hear a little bit about it. Definitely a cool and unique airplane.
Fun video Bobby I’ve seen the tri moter at Oshkosh many times I’ll have to give it a try next time good to see Laura keep having fun and thanks for sharing
Awesome piece of aviation history!
Great historic airplane, may she fly forever to show our children how aviation got started.
Thanks for taking us along Bobby!
You're in my neck of the woods Bobby! That Ford Tri-Motor comes to our airport in Waukesha WI for rides often. Great to see Laura with you in this series as well. You two are a great couple and I look forward to seeing her back on Sailing Doodles soon. Keep up the great work.
Absolutely beautiful aircraft and the interior is amazing! Great job!
Saw the one on display at The Henry Ford and they are absolutely beautiful planes.
Awesome piece of history
What a treat! Thanks for the experience
Great video! I rode on one in 2014 when the EAA one came to Shelby County Airport, AL. Very roomy cabin! Love the radial engine sound.
Saw this plane flying over my shop in Tucson yesterday!! I made my 28 year old son run out to see it. With the headwind, it could have been doing more than about 70 ground speed..... Awesome sight to see and hear it. May well be the first and last time my son will get to see one.
Beautiful plane...travel companion isn't so bad either! Welcome back to the Doodle videos Laura! Two in one day, it's a bit like winning the lottery, except Bobby gets the spoils!
Nice to see Laura again
I will see what I can do and hopefully see y'all in Mesa in January!!! I'm used to flying on jetliners but I've always wanted to fly on a prop plane! And to fly on a historic plane, that would make the experience even better!
Thank you, Flying Doodles, you couldn't have posted this video at a better time!
Absolutely stunning. The Tin Goose is the stuff of legend! Imagine doing a transcontinental trip in that bucket of nuts and bolts and rivets flying in close formation.
Super Cool!!!! Love your vids keep up the great work!!!
WOW! surprised that there are a few of these still flying, especially 8. I think the Henry Ford Museum has one on display. Great video as usual. Merry Christmas!
YES THEY DO IT DONT FLY BUT THEY HAVE ONE HENRY USED BACK IN THE DAY HE HAD A BIGGER PLANE MADE FOR HIS FORD MOTOR CO FAMILY ITS THERE IN THE MUSEUM LAST I KNEW I CANT REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS IT WAS LIKE A DC3 OR CLOSE TO IT !
The “City of Port Clinton” Tri-motor began its flying career as a school bus serving the Catawba Islands of South Bass, Middle Bass and Northern Bass. It would fly between the islands picking up and dropping off children that attended school in Port Clinton.
That is the plane that flies out to Kelly's Island isn't? Does it still still fly?
Used to watch a Tri Motor fly around the Erie islands back in the 70’s while walleye fishing. I believe that it ground looped on South Bass that ended its days as a ferry plane.
Great video of an oldtimer that's still flying. Thank you. Shalom
Awesome history! Great Plane.
@FlyingDoodles, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! If I hadn't come across your page and subscribed when I did, I probably would have missed the Ford Tri-Motor event in Mesa, Arizona the weekend of Jan, 26th 2018! I had heard of Ford Tri-Motor planes a few years back and thought they were cool but never dreamed of flying on one. I stumbled across your page due to one of your videos coming us as a suggestion based on another aviation video that I was watching. Mentour Pilot has some great videos as well. I was watching one of his videos about how certain systems work on aircraft and saw one of your videos as a suggested video to watch next.
When I finished watching this video that you did about the Ford Tri-Motor, I immediately went to the websites that Cody mentioned and booked my flight on the Ford in Mesa, Arizona! That flight on this incredible piece of Ford and aviation history was well worth the $70 price tag! I will do it again if this event returns next year and the year after too!
I've flown many times on jetliners (mostly Boeing 737 aircraft( but this was my first time flying on a prop plane.
I've always wanted to fly on a prop plane, but to fly on a Ford Tri-Motor, that was even better!
@3:12 .... "good landing???" That landing was just about as perfect as you can get! That landing was smoother than most landings that I've experienced in jetliners!!! I barely felt a thing when the wheels touched down. The way I knew for sure that we had landed was when I heard the wheels skid when making first contact with the runway.
Cody was the pilot for this event and I mentioned you to him and how I came across this event and he thought that was really cool and remembered you. He is a great pilot and flew this plane really well. Like Cody said in this video, I hope these planes are flying for many many years to come.
And to add humor to the event, I couldn't resist wearing my #48 Jimmie Johnson NASCAR shirt which has a big Chevrolet logo on it... :D
Flying Doodles, thank you once again for these awesome videos! I'm one of your biggest fans!
Best episode. Amazing plane.
Island Air Lines out of Port Clinton Ohio used to fly three trimotor's to Put In Bay Island (and I think several other neighboring islands). In 1968 and 1969, I went down there from Michigan at least three times just to ride on these wonderful machines. They used to have airline pilots come out there frequently to guest fly them, and I remember seeing some rough landings from the "professionals". One time I got lucky and got to ride right seat on one flight, an experience I'll never forget. hanks for a great video.
I am glad I was born when jets were the the norm for commercial airlines. I have great respect and awe for people who flew before flying became "safe" maybe sometime in the 60's with the 707?
Some amazing facts about an amazing airplane. Very informative! Thanks!!
Thank you so much! You brought back some memories. More than 30 years ago I paid extra money to ride the right seat in one. He even let me wiggle the controls a little. Part of the pre-flight briefing was, "It takes off at 90, cruises at 90, and flies down approaches at 90." It was a fabulous experience and a great plane.
Wow 😲! Awesome to see one of these fly 🙏! Thanks!
The airline, Island Air, I believe also had a couple of Beavers it used. But alas, no more. Used to promote itself as the worlds shortest airline. There is a great museum at the Pt Clinton airport that has a B 25 Mitchell that you can fly in.
Fantastic Plane, Rode her twice at OSH19. Loved it !
Hey Bobby, Not sure how I missed this episode, I've seen all the other Flying Doodles, just found this one today. The Ford TriMotor has to rank up there in aviation history at number 2 right behind the Wright Flyer. I could tell that you and Laura really enjoyed that flight. Great work as always, keep them coming.
Awesome and gives a whole new meaning to "on a wing and a prayer"
OMG what a 😍‼️ Thanks so much for sharing this. I can only imagine the trepidation of people riding this in the early days. What a thrill it must have been, seeing the earth from above for the first time in those huge bay windows!
Really cool, Bobby!
Use to be a Tri-motor sitting by a building near the flight line at Incirlik AFB in Adana Turkey.. This was around 1970-71...
The Oshgosh Airshow is on my bucket list....lol One of the greatest and biggest Airshows in the world.
Cool! It's coming to Idaho Falls in May. can't wait to check it out.
Nice Video Doodles. The Ford is definitely a piece of history.
Wow! A flying museum! I love your channel, just found it!
Excellent video!
A beautiful and iconic aircraft.
I remember seeing that plane on display years ago at the Evergreen Aviation Museum. Good to see the new owners put her back in the skies.
I had the privilege of taking a ride in one of these machines when I was about 8 years old. It was my first airplane ride and it got me hooked on flying.
Love the prop bend under load! Saw this when I flew in it, if you get the camera in plain with the prop its more pronounced yet...
Love this bird. Flew on one at EAA
The brief section during the touch & go where he opens up for T.O. revealed some really neat sound I've never heard before. I'm sure it has to do with the sync of 3 engines but it is a really powerful, unique sound.
Wow. Great stuff.
Had the opportunity to see one in Florida a couple years ago. Great look.
Frigging AWESOME! Great one.!
Boy he greased that landing, haha.
I am liking your video's....keep it up! Great Job!
Amazing stuff
A great interview. A lot of people dont know that the very first paved runway and the very first passenger terminal for dedicated regional passenger travel was at the Ford, Dearborn Michigan site. Currently the Henry Ford Musuem and next door a Ford test track sits where this historic site once was. Surprisingly not one mention or plaque on site to showcase the history of ford motor company
Bobby and Laura , you guys are the greatest!!! I just saw a previous vlog wishing a Merry Christmas 🎁! I consider myself a very good judge of people and ❤️ heart! Never let anyone give you a hard time! You are beautiful people who put it all on the line! Never forget that! If you need a second opinion just ask your Mom and Dads! They will confirm you are beautiful people inside and out! I would give anything to be able to be your best friend or offer enough to your program to be part of your team! Keep your head up and never ever quit on your dream!
A great airplane and a epic mark in aviation history..... and the seat mate isn't too bad either..... good to see Lauras' smiling face back again
I got to fly in one at Oshkosh a few years back. Super bird.
great vid, beautiful machine!
Excellent vid! I know this vid has been out for a while, and I'm re watching it. I noticed the Royal Duke behind the Ford. Ever think of doing a Flying Doodles on the Royal Duke conversion? That thing is a rocket ship! Keep up the fine work!
Maybe some day!
OK, this is the best episode yet! If this is the trajectory of the channel, this will soon be one of the top aviation RUclips Channel's. The big dogs (Flight Chops, Aviation101, etc) should partner with you NOW!
*Amazing, keep working!!!*
I saw one of these in Reno last week (may 2019)...the pilot pointed it out over the intercom!
1:28 I love the trimotor and EAA.. but it is sad, that non US history is never existent for US citizens, the first mass produced all metal airliner was the Junkers F-13 in 1919
Maybe it's difficult for folks to think of an airplane that only carries 4 people (F-13) as an airliner. After all, a Cessna 172 can do that.
@@johnfillmore343 The F13 carries 4 passengers and a crew of two. So, no, not a Cessna 172
@@mneeser872 Cessna 206.
pro trick: you can watch movies on flixzone. I've been using them for watching all kinds of movies recently.
@Kole Fabian Yea, have been using flixzone} for years myself =)
Dangit Bobby! That was seriously badass! Im jealous
That was WAYY cool!!
Yep! My first airplane ride was in Little Ford during Oshkosh 1996 when I was 5
