As we wait for life to change after recently buying a remote cottage in Ireland, our current off grid life living in a van was starting to get to us. Winter van life in the UK can be tough, we were getting cabin fever, starting to feel continuously trapped inside the van and after a while, spending 24/7 with just one other person can get a little.. tetchy!
This week we travel 1200 miles across Europe, taking the ferry from Dover to calais as we begin a journey South..

Never ever boring. I am 82 years old and for 14 years before he passed my husband and I lived full-time in a motorhome and traveled the entire United States. So right now I am very envious of both of you and the great time you are having. We were never ones to sit still either. When I married my husband, he was in the Navy, and after 20 years, he retired And then took another job for the next 20 years of which we did not travel. Well, when he finally retired from that, rather than kill each other, we moved into a motorhome. The best 14 years of our lives. We made such wonderful friends, and saw things most people don’t see, and just enjoyed every single minute of the time we were on the road. So not by any means are your videos boring at least to me. Thank you for letting me travel the world through you.

Happy New Year! I’m doing my first drive to France and then onto Spain next week! I’ll be in my Motorhome, just me and the dog, following my friends in theirs. We are going on Le Shuttle and I don’t think we are going via the toll roads. I haven’t driven in France since 1997 and it occurred to me that we will arrive in France in the dark driving on the wrong side of the road! All in all away for 10 weeks. I’m 63, this was mine and my husbands dream and part of our 5 year plan. Sadly he died 3 years ago and I promised I would have our adventure, so next Thursday I’m off! Wish me luck!

I’ve checked a thousand times for a video. To take me away, our Bassett passed away last night. We found out a week ago she had cancer, and it was metastatic. She had exploratory surgery, and they asked if we wanted to just let her go or out her back together. We brought her home, and our vet gave us meds for pain and anxiety and nausea to keep her comfortable. She was comfortable, and happy and had a great few days prancing like the queen she was. Then yesterday she slept her way onto Heaven (I’m a hospice nurses and I don’t care what anyone says, dogs our pets go to wait on us). I was unaware the capacity for a dog the love that is. I’d never had a pet.
So this is a welcome distraction
We are so so sorry to hear this and know only too well the pain you are feeling right now, so glad we could distract you for a little bit and it’s lovely to hear she has a good couple of days ❤️
She had the best parents she could have had ❤

Well done girls. I live in Wales and it has been storm after storm after floods and rain and more storms. So nice to get away to some sun.
I thought the video was great, not boring at all. Having just converted our first van and started using it for holidays and weekends (unfortunately a few years from retiring so no longer trips at the moment) we love watching all the everyday vanlife stuff and the travelling even the loo emptying!! Its all part of the package when travelling in a van and we find it really interesting to see how the experts do it all!
Get yourself a Bip&Go tag it’ll save the issue of the class of your vehicle and also the hastle of your fine lady hanging out the window getting tickets all the time.
I drive in France often and the tag has made things so much easier!

Hi from Queensland, Australia. It’s so good to see you girls back on RUclips, it gives me a good chuckle. Today is my last day at work, so I am feeling pretty excited about getting on the road full time. I’ve just bought a medium sized motorhome (used of course), and will be heading off in a few weeks time. Work wise, I will be working as a travel nurse, so will be all over this country. Oh, how this took me back to when I fulltimed in my Autotrail Scout, every year around about November I’d wend my way slowly through France and Spain eventually arriving on the South of Portugal wherever it was quiet and peaceful. Then at Easter, all the way back again.
Summers were spent in Scotland and the Outer Hebrides…..Oh happy days, so many memories. 😇
I'm starting to understand what you meant about having 2 bases now, it sounds like a sensible idea to make the most of each places weather. Why live with the worst 3 or 4 months weather in Ireland when you could be in the sun. Plus when you're Irish residents you won't be limited to the 3 month rule. Very smart.

First night in France - snow. First few days in Spain - heavy rain and hail. Like you I'm making my way to Portugal, but at a much slower pace.
I’m so envious of 14 degrees it turned very cold here in the Uk today well certainly did in Northamptonshire 🥶 had to put my gloves on to go out haven’t needed them all week

This is why living full time in a caravan and a ute. (Ford Ranger) is ideal for us. The ranger is my shed.
In usually up at 6 am. Wife gets up at 11.
With the ute, i can take off for a while. Little cooker. Packet of coffee. Sit on the back of the ute watching the sun come up with the dog.

That may not have been the most interesting video you have ever made, but they are always so entertaining! As for your French Emily, it is always understandable and the French always appreciate it when foreigners try to speak their language so you are doing OK! Ooh, no, that has not been my experience at all! They get very angry when you butcher their language. Yes, if you make the effort while they’re in your own country, the French will be pleased. But when you’re in their country, the French want you to get it right and have no patience if you don’t.
We came back from our last French trip certain that there are some lovely French people, because we’d met them. Both of them!
I have reasonable schoolboy French and can generally get by, though I do sometimes need to ask them to speak more slowly, or try a different way to say something, but when I speak, you can see them take a breath while deciding whether it’s worth bothering with me. It’s not uncommon to be ignored and have the next person behind me in a queue get served instead. The amazing thing is, the public treat that as normal and will also ignore me, taking my turn over and over, until I either give up or decide to cause a scene.
Being Irish in a non touristy part of France is not for the faint hearted. The resorts are fine. No issue there at all. But getting there can be a pain.

I have spent the last year travelling on my own to Iceland, Norway, The Arctic Circle, Portugal, Spain, France, Barbados, Madeira, and many more places. At 69 I was just beginning to think I should settle down, especially after losing my gorgeous little (but very old) dog. But after watching your vlog I know it's not for me! Thank you for helping me find a new path in life and I hope you go on to have a thousand more adventures x

I actually loved this video, maybe because I live in a vehicle myself and travel too and I know the excitement of a spontaneous travel plan and the buzz of driving a lot to make it a long distance towards your destination. I could feel that excitement through the screen.

I do sympathise with the sea sickness thing Louise. Every time for me UNTIL I did the opposite to what the usual advice is i.e. looking out to the horizon and don't have anything to eat. I figured it was worth a go so I sat in the cafe area and tucked into a big veggie lasagne and didn't look out the windows at all. It was a really rough crossing with plates crashing and lots of green looking faces all around me and I was fine! Couldn't believe it!

Just bear in mind, this is approaching processionary caterpillar season in Portugal (and most of Southern Europe). Be mindful when dog walking in pine woods. Keep an eye out for their nests in the trees.

Maybe Emily also have a goldilocks window, though not as tight as Summer’s :) Driving from Washington to California (multiple times a year) over winter time, from constant cloudy/rainy days to feeling the warmth and brightness of the sun also brings out similar happy feelings. And a bottle of Mountain Dew (instead of black coffee) starts the driving day. Looking forward to more sun videos to keep some of us, who are still in rainy weather, warm! Thank you and fingers cross for safe and un(bad)eventful travels in Spain!

@@campervibe Indeed it is a cool drive… either along the coastal route or the inner mountain route, and even along the I-5 highway where 700miles in 9 hrs is possible. But only those who can appreciate the journey finds it a cool drive, which I hope you will be able to do next time you are in the US. can’t wait til your next “boring” video, which is still so so entertaining!

If you are going to buy a property in Portugal check out taxes as you might get taxed on one or both properties. Also capital gains tax 😢
We won’t be buying anything anytime soon, just scooping the place/places out really to see if it would be something we would want to do later on

Gosh, it just brought it home to me , that the last time I went abroad on a DFDS ferry was with a 7m Hymer motorhome in 2018. It cost £59. A plandemic later, inflation and now its almost three times as much. Good job I'm swapping van life for boat life.

You guys have got to visit Andora in the Pyrenees. It’s a beautiful place. We lived in Costa Brava and used to visit regularly. Give it a try on your way back north. You will love the place.
Also on the idea of the foreign home look into the €1 euro homes in Italy. There are loads available even in the north of Italy and just as easy to drive to as Spain or Portugal. Great opportunity’s to renovate. My wife and myself are selling up in the U.K. and joining permanent van life but with the twist of a €1 euro property in Italy.

Not keen on the English themed bars in Albufeira but great beaches and we found a brilliant free park up not far from 1€ services.
Had 2 days of rain in 3 weeks. Winner

Cheaper property around Chaves.
Lots of quiet free park ups but lots of dogs roaming freely.
Careful of france speed cameras on main roads, they do avg speed between 2 cameras, dont slow down then speed up.

I think Portugal for a period is a great decision particularly given how wet UK has been and now turning cold. I'm disappointed louise, the godess of innuendo stuck to the badger in a kayak rather than looking for a beaver in a kayak 😅

My wife and I have a great camper van, a dog (no cat), we have just bought a cottage in the Cotswolds and are currently waiting to exchange….. what we don’t have is the ability or time to drive down to Portugal … so SO jealous! Spain will be handy to get to from Ireland too with a direct ferry from Rosslare to Bilbao (handy for skipping France's motorways and tolls).

You've done the right thing leaving the UK as it has rained non stop and now the temperature has dropped, so AJ and especially Summer would not be able to get out or get some fresh air and I think the cabin fever would have been unbearable for you all. Enjoy Portugal and if there is a place for you out there at the right price go for it...life's too short so make the most of it.
