• 6 Months in Iraqi Kurd...
How are prices in your city, in your country? Let me know in comments!
Welcome to Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan. Erbil is known for its modern, expensive-looking buildings and is considered an expensive city by locals.
What is the reality? Will my 8 month stay here ruin my wallet or no?
Let’s find out what can you do with 10 DOLLARS!
Erbil has 1.5 million inhabitants and is actually one of the oldest cities in the world. The local citadel has a documented history of more than 6,000 years! Near this citadel is the traditional, iconic Grand Bazaar. Where better to buy things than there? Let's head there!
We can either take a taxi, which costs about 4,000 Iraqi dinars, roughly 3 USD. But, I’ll take a bus, which is just 750 dinars, about half a dollar!
So lets catch a bus! The journey took about twenty minutes, and was for 750 Iraqi Dinars.
Speaking of Iraqi Dinars, let’s look at the currency.
The currency look changed After the downfall of Saddam Hussein in 2003, back then his image was featured on the banknotes.
Interesting is also this old banknote with al-Khwarizmi, the inventor of algebra.
Now, on the current banknotes, you can find there places from all over Iraq. And the old notes can still be bought as a souvenir at the bazaar.
The banknotes reach from 250 to 50 000, but I can’t show you the highest one because I am too poor to have it
The currency is influenced by inflation, therefore we need about 14 thousand to have 10 US Dollars.
So, here we are. Grand Bazaar.
Its starting to be very hot in Erbil, the temperatures are reaching up to 50 C in summer! What else to buy than delicious pistachious ice cream ?
It costed just 1 500 Dinars.
Okay, let’s move on. There is one think noone visiting Iraq escapes: tea.
Usually is very cheap, about 250, however for this one I paid one thousand. It’s in the famous cafe in the city center after all.
What I really like about my stay here, is the quality and price for nuts. Pistachious, cashew, these are so expensive in Europe. Here, I paid for a mix of pistachious, peanuts and cashew 5k for half a kilo!
Of course, as a typical tourist, I got lured in to a tourist trap and bought this souvernir with Kurdish flag, with a shape of Kurdistan, for 2k.
On the way, in bazaar, I was invited for some sweets in this amazing sweets shop, Damascus sweets! I managed to get some sweets for free - it’s actually quite frequent, locals are so friendly towards foreigners and trying to make them feel welcomed and help in any situation
Then I also bought some other sweets to the way. Middle Eastern sweets are just legendary!
If my stay in Erbil tought me something - there is never enough food.
On my way back, I stopped for a falafel bread. Just for 1k!
Bread is actually on every corner. I will need some for tomorrow, so I’ll head to my favorite bakery.
It’s just 250 for two pieces!
Tomorrow, I leave to a trip to mountains, so I need to buy a pack of water bottles. Just for 1k!
So, for 10 Dollars, we bought a bus ticket, icecream, tea, half a kilo of nuts, souvenir, sweets, falafel, pack of water bottles and a bread. It’s pretty good, no?

Erbil is probably one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, many empires have ruled over this area like the Babylonians, sasanids, ottomans etc… erbil is also the home of very different ethnic groups such as Arabs,Kurds,Turkmens,Assyrians, and even Jews back during late 19 and early 20th centuries, erbil is also the safest city in iraq after suleimania and duhok with barely any crimes,
Fun fact about erbil: the EBL Erbil international airport has the longest runways in Middle East
Thank you so much for the comment! I am currently working on a documentary about my 6 months in Erbil, I will be sure to use all these info!

@@KURDISTAN905-q7t1st grade comebacks. NOW STOP BEING GREEDY! IT IS OUR LAND.
I've been in Erbil, it's honestly not bad. The atmosphere is very heavily influenced by the West. Women are safe to walk around in whatever clothing, though some choose their traditional garb. The city is safe enough, that some businesses lock up at night, and leave new product outside without fear of theft. I've been to the family mall a few times, which is a nice place to visit and buy various items. Inside we found a local gym on the 3rd floor (or 2nd, can't remember), a grocery store, regular goods store, and a store similar to a Home Depot. Can't remember the names of the actual stores, but they were worth the visit.
Thanks for the comment!
I can only agree. Erbil is a safe city and The Family mall is a great place to spend free time, they also have the only cinema in the city.
Have you worked there or just travelled?

Welcome 😊🎉
Hey Dan, since most kurds here keep telling you kurdistan is not iraqi, i thought its best to inform you about their history, kurds are not arabs, they never were, in fact they are distributed in some countries including Iran, Turkey and Iraq. In Iraq specifically, they inhabit the north of Iraq, meaning iraqi lands, within years they take their salaries, food and economy from the south and middle of Iraq, but they got too greedy that now they want to call themselves a country. The audacity of some kurds to tell the world that they’re not Iraqi is beyond me and its rude after all they live on our economy. If they want to be a country then they can go out of Iraqi lands and declare themselves as a fully independant country no one will stop them, but they cant cause who would fund them? So please ignore what they’re saying and welcome to IRAQI kurdistan
I’m a Kurd and I completely agree with you! Finally someone with common sense! It’s so painful to watch my people claim someone’s land as their own and ridicule the Iraqis by telling them the land they STOLE from them doesn’t belong to them . We stole all 4 countries land and want it to be an ‘independent’ country and play victim when people tell us we can’t , it’s sickening :/ .
Hey, thanks a lot for the comment! I spent 6 months in Erbil and spoke with many people about the political situation and know it can be very complicated.
@@danvoznak it’s very complicated indeed, but i tried to tell you the truth that they for some reason ignore and refuse to acknowledge, i mean it’s pretty clear from simple things like the map and even from football, i once watched a football match in Erbil and the kurds were supporting Iraq in the olympics because they don’t have a team on their own, everything tells them that they aren’t a country. The SIMPLE truth is that Iraq is a very varied country, meaning it has different religions and ethnicities, it has Turkmens, Kurds, Arabs and even jews, muslims, christians, sabians and many more ancient religions, Iraq contained them all for years. Kurdistan is a province in Iraq.
