For Day 7 we are going to New York's Penn Station and its annex Moynihan Train Hall. We're going to check out the facilities at Moynihan and look at the new construction of the Penn Station entryway on 7th Avenue.

Another great video Thea. 1) Your criticisms of Moynihan Hall are absolutely valid, and I'll add another: the total inadequacy of the restrooms. While current station management might not have been responsible for the lack of restrooms in the main Penn station (three! and they're awful), they failed to correct this in the Moynihan's plans. An Amtrak passenger better not need to use the restroom if they're in a rush to catch a train! 2) Around 10 years ago I was invited by NJ Transit to participate in a focus group examining ways to remodel their sections of Penn Station-- I was even paid $100 for my time. While it was interesting to learn about the many challenges they faced, I note that still nothing has yet been done by them except to update some signage.

So glad you mentioned how unreal the seating situation is. An enormous beautiful building, zero chairs. So anybody who’s not able to stand for the entire wait time can sit on the floor. Classy👍 I use this facility almost every day.

    Happy Saturday Thea!
I love your very ambitious series. I started watching you with your PATH video after I rode it. At some point, you should speedrun PATH. The best route I think would be to start with the "red" line from Newark Penn to WTC, WTC to Hoboken, Hoboken onwards to 33rd street and finally, 33rd street back to Journal Square. Maybe you might want to do it backwards given that you live in NY proper. I am a huge PATH fan and I guess that's why the Oculus transit hub video is my favorite in the series. At the oculus, you can see the subway come and go and you can go on very fun hydraulic elevators. 10/10 would recommend those elevators. Keep up the great work.
I am from Boston, so it is great to see someone as good as you explain the biggest transit system in the U.S.
I love New York myself (because they have world's biggest Krispy Kreme obviously) for transit purposes and you do a good job showcasing that. Do come to Boston and ride the T at some point!

I love Penn Station same time I’m glad it’s getting a major makeover and renovation, it’s like underground city from above New York also on top of Madison Square Garden and Moynihan Train Hall.

There are no seats to keep the homeless from congregating. At one point Moynihan Train Hall had security walking around and wouldn't let anyone even sit on the floor. They must have relaxed a bit since the early days.

Those Jumbotrons playing ads really add that je ne sais quoi to the architecture. It looks great on the new 7th ave facade of Penn Station, totally not distracting at all. I really hope they put some Jumbotrons in the main room in Grand Central Station next. That way people will be graced with ads for cough medicine, banks, and money management apps during their romantic moment. You simply cannot have an iconic, world class train station without a Jumbotron!

I traveled through nyc by train recently, and was really annoyed by the lack of seating. It's so crazy that we as a society have spent so long punishing homeless people that we just create a lower quality of living for everyone else as the new normal.

Happy Friday Thea. Great video as always 12th Liked 👍 I haven't been to Penn Station in years. It really looks nice now. It's too bad there isn't enough seating area. I remember going to the new Penn Station and new Madison Square Garden in 1968 to see the circus there 🤡 Looking forward to seeing day #8 tomorrow! Have a great day Thea 😎👍

They do it for anti-houselessness purposes. Problem with the old Penn Station is houseless and unwell people would overrun it at night and take all the benches for sleeping. I wish there was a better solution though than just removing all the benches

Long islanders have been, debatably, spoiled with both Monaghan and Grand Central Madison opening up in the last few years, but neither of them is sufficient like that map shows and I think a lot of us would agree we just want the old Penn station back.

I have a question: (and likely misunderstant the layout but based on my understanding:
The "legacy" Penn entrance was on 7th avenue in the middle of the block and went down one floor to the "station" level with the big round atrium.
One level below is what is called the concourse level that has the stairs down to each platform. Roughly under 33rd is a long corridor at cocourse level ws all renovated with a new grand entrance near corner of 7th and 33rd.
My pictures as a tourist show that the stairs/escalators to the old atrium are about as long as those from the new entrance at 7th and 33rd to concourse level, yet, if concourse level is one level below the station level, how come the stairs aren't longer since they would go down 2 levels from street level to concourse level?

6:08 "There is a waiting area but it's not that big." You flash from the LIRR waiting area (cramped, lower level) to the Amtrak ticketed passenger waiting area (upper level) at Penn Station west of 8th Avenue. The latter seats several hundred passengers and I've never seen it full. (The tables with power for laptops do fill up though). This is unlike the ticketed passenger waiting area at Moynihan, which is usually jam packed. There's also another smaller waiting area with seats at the West End Concourse under Moynihan that nobody ever seems to use. (p.s.: You can buy a same-day fully refundable first-class Amtrak ticket to check out the Metropolitan Lounge and then cancel your trip.)

I'm interested to know how much seating is available in each ticketed waiting area. The video shows there could be additional seating in the non-ticketed areas. That said, I wonder if part of the reason for limiting seating goes beyond policing unhoused people. One way to keep people moving is to limit the amount of seating. This was likely an important consideration when designing the newer spaces.

I've been in there to look thru many times, not taking Amtrak there yet, but LIRR and subway connection, One tour, too. Walking thru to go to 9 Ave. B&H photovideo, across 9 Ave to 'Manhattan West' and Hudson Yards.
The waiting and food options are nicer in Moynihan than in old Penn. Toilets are better. Both can be crowded and issue to wait to go down to platforms.
It is hard to believe the big trusses across the hall are original. Had observers up there .. looking down on a mail sorting floor for security!
The hall was roofed - not open courtyerd.

During my recent trip to NYC, I traveled to/from Moynihan 5 times. I don't think I used the same way through the complex more than once 🙂
Leaving NYC, I took the 1 to 34th, ended up in the big round atrium at Penn Station, followed signs to Moynihan which led me to crossing 8th ave and entering via "TO TRAINS" entrance on the south side.
There was one time where I ended up on that new long corridor. And another rime where I was in a mix of old/new. (Coming off train from Washington, people just went up to Penn Station since walking all the way to Moynihan is pointless (trains still stop under Penn where platforms are).
The first time arriving from Montréal, I ended up in the route you showed, but took the C right away and didn't see the new corridor. Looking at various maps of the complex now, I can better retroactively orient myself on the various routes I took. But during trip, I followed signs without understanding where I was going.
On Moynihan/seats: I had no problems getting into and finding seats in the coach passenger lounge. There are toilets there. My guess is that it is LIRR passengers who decided to use Moynihan that are seat-less.
There are 2 "baggage" related areas, one is baggage collection, and one that is more for customer service (where you can drop bags for $10 for the day), and that one has a really impressive high m8ral with pictures of the original Penn Station.
One caveat about catching Amtrak trains from Penn Station concourse: For the Adirondack (Not sure about Maple Leaf), there are controls at Moynihan to separate passengers going beyond border and getting off train south of border, and if going north of border, you MUST check in and have hand luggage tagged and get a paper boarding pass and that is checked when you board the train. Passengers going to Canada form separate line than those taking train to points south fo border and board first (and have very long walk from Moynihan to very back of train on easten side of Penn Station).

¿No seats? That's not friendly to people with disabilities who don't use a wheelchair. They need more waiting areas.

How are you going to say there's no seats but you refuse to check out any of the multiple the ticketed waiting rooms? (insert face palm emoji here) I usually like your videos but I almost always can find a seat in at least 3 of the 5 waiting rooms and the one in the main moinahan hall has outlets and USB ports for passengers and all of this aside trains are supported to be announced 10-12 minutes in advance and aside from the extreme congestion in the pm peek thats usually the case from a safety and loading perspective if I'm on LI heading into the city for a basketball game and I get to Penn and there's 1000 people on the platform waiting to get on while me and my train are trying to get off and out of the station it becomes a big challenge and the same goes for passenger strike from passengers falling onto the tracks
