  • Jessica Lange ('Feud: Bette and Joan') dishes her role as iconic actress Joan Crawford and her Oscar, Tony, Emmy wins with Gold Derby editor Chris Beachum. We also chat about meeting Bette Davis back in 1983.
    Lange is a two-time Oscar winner, having prevailed as Best Supporting Actress for "Tootsie" (1982) and Best Actress for "Blue Sky" (1994) among her six career nominations. Along with Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett, they are the only actresses in Academy Awards history to win supporting and then lead in their careers. She also took home a Tony Award last summer for "Long Day's Journey Into Night." With that trophy, her two Oscars, and three victories at the Emmys, she is just a Grammy away from becoming the 13th person to achieve EGOT status.

      she is. she has attended several art events here in New Orleans, La. very very friendly. doesn't seem as if she's too enthused to autograph or take a selfie though. but, say hi, how are you? shake your hand. she'll do that. I would never ask a celebrity for an autograph or selfie. too much into there personal space or so I think.

      She comes across as an actress who loves the work way more than being famous. I think that what separates her from Meryl Streep, as Jessica is more reserve and doesn’t get political if it could take attention away from her work or the project she’s in.

      I agree completely! She has that unmistakable open book quality. I like how she goes into talking about discouraging her grandchildren from seeing Francis. That movie was my least favorite because of the horrible psychiatric treatment she received as a result of a mother who herself suffered from a personality disorder.

      @lapislazuli7876 2 года назад

      Dunaway did a campy interpretation of Crawford and it wasn’t very good acting. She pretty much admits it herself. It’s the fault of the director really though. Lange’s interpretation is brilliant and probably much closer to the real and tragic quality
      of Joan Crawford.I feel Lange was better at doing Crawford than Sarandon was at doing Davis. But Sarandon definitely looked a lot more like Davis than Lange looked like Crawford. I just don’t think Sarandon captured Davis’s particular and peculiar speech patterns and mannerisms. Whereas Lange really seems to have captured Joan’s speech and voice and style much better.

    • @JudgeJulieLit

      Therapist 84 my point is that both the series and Lange did Crawford justice. Up until this point most of the public looked at Joan as that crazy monster portrayed by Faye in Mommie Dearest and Feud shown us a fighter and a smart woman with a complicated past. Of course there's an exaggeration to amplify the drama but Lange was extraordinary in every way.

However, if I HAD to choose one (what a Sophie's choice that would be) I would have to give it to Lange because she broke my heart playing Joan.

    • @georgelong9782

      I hope Jessica Lange gets nominated but Susan Sarandon DOES NOT deserve a nomination. She was AWFUL as Bette Davis. Nothing like her at all. A pale, pale imitation. No fire or strength or anger like Bette had. I saw Bette Davis in person in 1974 in her "concert" appearance. They showed 1 hour of her movie clips then she came out and answered questions from the audience. It was great and a lifelong memory for me.

    Another interesting coincidence was when Jessica was nominated for Best Actress for Sweet Dreams (as Patsy Cline) at the 1986 Oscars and was up against Anne Bancroft for Agnes of God and Geraldine Page for The Trip to Bountiful (Page would win). Little did she know then she'd play Crawford some 30 years later appealing to Bancroft and Page to accept their Oscar should they win.

    Sadly it may well have not happened if not for men trying to create publicity

    • @ClarenceFisher
      @ClarenceFisher 7 лет назад +9

      From what I can see in "Feud", I'd say Bette Davis only made that remark about Joan's death because that's the "role" she was playing in life. Earlier, we heard her tell "Victor Buono" that if she were heard saying anything nice about Joan that it would wipe out half her talk show appearances.
      On the surface it sounds cruel of her to say, but did you see the look on her face after she hung up on the reporter? She had this look on her face to say "My God, what the hell did I do? Why did I say that?" It appeared as if she was so trapped in this image of "I hate Joan Crawford", that she couldn't say what she really felt. Also, did you see her trying to call her when she heard she was ill, but then "chickened out" when she heard Joan's voice? I'e gone through that. There were people I considered reaching out to, and it was a good idea in theory, but I "chickened out" when push came to shove.

    I love what she said about Joan Crawford. To me, legacy is the superlative of all achievements because it's what you leave long after you're gone and it breaks my heart that Joan's is so tarnished while she basically spent her whole life creating hers, starting from the very bottom. I hope Feud, like what it did to me, encourages more people to rediscover Joan Crawford, see past the alarmingly inaccurate Mommie Dearest and some creative license taken by Ryan Murphy, and realize that she is no worse than any actress of her era and deserves the same, if not more, respect. Thanks, Jessica, for letting us see that beneath her Hollywood survival tactics, there is a good person who just wanted to love and be loved.

    She is so fantastic as an actress, it's downright scary. Way better than Streep!

      MrS98VAC I love Jessica and all the roles she's played, but in recent years it seems to me that she's always "Jessica" in every role if that makes sense.

      Sacred Swindell It makes sense, but it could not be further from the truth. She literally inhabits every role that she plays!

      More human and authentic than Streep, but absolutely. And, by the way, sooo much more attractive.

      Meryl Streep is good at performing and mimicing really (a chamelion)
      BTW, she is a very scheming opportunist who can grasp the golden chances to shine.

      Both are better than Bernie Bro cult victim Susan Sarandon. That's important to remember. She had a neurotic flashy role about a woman who could only play neurotic flashy roles.

    I have to admit - I LOVE Jessica Lange - she's a brilliant actress and I truly enjoyed her portrayal of Joan Crawford however - although I'm not a fan of Susan Sarandon's, I thought Susan was magnificent as Bette Davis. I loved "FEUD" - what a great series! Bravo to Jessica and Susan. And the rest of the cast was amazing, especially Jackie Hoffman as "Mamacita" and the great Judy Davis as "Hedda Hopper"

      Lydia Lilli I had no issues with he portrayal but as a person who has read a good amount of books on both, I don't think it did Joan any real justice. Bette is easy to do, and that's not a slight. But I think what draws people to Joan is that complexity of charecter and look, and I just didn't see much of that in this portrayal of JC. She had many more dimensions to her than what we saw. Bette had exactly two, and we saw those.

    Jessica brought "acting" to Feud and in playing Joan. There were no camp hysterics with her Joan, like...that other actress playing Joan in that other role. So many Joan fans didn't like Jessica because she wasn't mimicking Joan. As a lifetime Joan Crawford, Jessica TRULY brought her to life. She did everything right and I hope and pray she sweeps the awards for this role. Susan was good as Bette, but for me she was doing an impersonation as much as she was acting and Joan's role was the meatier and more fleshed out of the two Hollywood legends.

    I love this interview and the amount of insight Jessica Lange gives in it.
    Her performance in the series was outstanding and it moved me deeply. For years I only ever knew „Mommy Dearest“ and it painted a very one sided picture of Crawford as far as dehumanizing her. But „Feud“ showed a very complex person under such complex circumstances and sparked such sympathy in me. I have to admit that I cried for Crawford when I saw the last episode. She was forgotten by the world and that broke her heart.

    I always felt animosity toward Joan Crawford. She didn’t seem authentic. But Jessica lange portrayal of her fleshed her out and I felt so empathetic and compassionate for the crawford that Lange created. Lange is simply inside out amazing!

    JL is a brilliant actress. I thought it was marvellous to watch joan and bette come to life again and to relive that experience as part the audience. I loved bettes movies and I loved joans movies and I did not want them to end. and I loved Feud and I did not want the miniseries to come to an end either. do you think you can keep the story going with BD davis and Christina crawford brought to life and watch drama about those two
