Ernestine Wade brought such a level of convincing intensity to the Sapphire character that she should have been awarded an Emmy for best actress in a comedy series. I loved those episodes where Sapphire could be delightfully pleasant, then, like flipping a switch, she would get [rightfully so] very hostile . . . and Ernestine Wade staying true to the Sapphire character when that happened . . . that's the mark of a superb acting talent.
I so agree with you. A superb actress who played beyond the stereotypes. All the actors has outstanding credentials. It is a shame there were so few real acting jobs for them.
hello , my mom and dad way back in the day , got a kick out of this show . sometimes , my dad would laugh and teasingly call my mom sapphire , we'd all laugh.........we were just happy to see people who looked like us , on television . we knew their portraiture of blacks , was not an accurate portrayal . great share , thank you , for sharing....😊😊😊🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰.........
It's easy to see both sides of the argument about this show. It had black characters who worked in professional positions which weren't depicted on any other TV show at the time. However, the main characters were created by people who were laughing at Black people, not with them and that is what civil rights groups couldn't look past, and rightfully so.
Gosden and Correl did not put on "Black Face" to perform on the radio. They did, however do that when they appeared in the movie, CHECK AND DOUBLE CHECK (1930), They were not happy with the film, and that was the only time they did this. The basic problem, aside from the White actors doing "Negro dialect" was the way that the dialogue was written by White Writers based on their depiction of Black characters. The fact is that there were, and continue to be Black people who speak in the criticized illiterate manner. But the television show did show some professional Black characters speaking in an articulate and educated manner. Unfortunately, the impressions of the main characters is so strong that they over power the impression of the entire show. I would have agreed that Saphire's dialogue could have been more articulate since I knew Black women like her. As for labeling Sapphire as an "angry Black Woman," being married to a dubious character like George Stevens would make her edgy. The irony of her even marrying such a man adds to the foundation of the comedy. Sapphire was her husband's conscience. Her chastising was really hilarious because and the audience knew that "Kingfish" deserved it.
You are right, they did not need blackface for radio. I see it in the ads and promotions for the radio show. Negro dialect like those of other groups was common and we hear it in ethnic movies. It is not from ignorance but how taught to speak. One of the things I like about the show is how varied the characters were. Professionals, business owners, police, judge and how American the families were. Yes, to make it a comedy, there was over-exaggerated baffoon behavior., but in perspective. The right values showed up by the end. Interesting that you see Sapphire as his conscience. I agree, just never thought of it that way. When I read about these actors, they were well-trained and had worthy acting careers. Thanks for your comments.
@@asbhistory6785 ....just like they tried to cancel , ms. hattie mcdaniels , for her portrayals as a maid.......she clapped back stating " well , i'd rather play a maid , than be a maid " .....priceless😊😊😊😊............
Sapphire needs no defense. She was an intelligent, responsible, very attractive woman! No tv show would have influenced whites to be any more or any less racist

Laughing with and at is the premise of comedy. I hear you and during this time Jim Crow as king.
"Depicting black women in PROPER character then and today."
Thanks for your insight.
Unfortunately, this theme of a black woman in her relationship with her husband/male partner.
