    If you are from the new school and can consciously say out of your mouth that Tupac is a two on a scale of one to nine, I can’t rock with you. You don’t have to like Tupac per se, but I would argue that you have to respect him.
    I was born in 1981 and didn’t come up on Run DMC for instance. I would say in general, the 80’s aren’t necessarily my favorite decade of hip hop. I will be damned though, if I relegate a figure like Rakim or Kool Moe Dee to a rating of two......because I understand that without them, there would be no Nas, Biggie, Jay-Z or Tupac, who I did come up on.
    The problem with a lot (not all, but a lot) of these new artists is they don’t pay respect to the veterans in the game. Vince Staples called Biggie and Tupac overrated because they didn’t sell as many records as Kanye West. That’s an incredibly ignorant thing to say and he deserved every bit of backlash he got.
    Pay respect to those that made it possible for you to do what you do......that’s what it’s all about at the end of the day.

    First, stop falling on the melody angle. Black Moon, Bone Thugs, Missy, even Pac and The Bad Boy sound, melody is nothing new. And they was rhyming too, Second, “change” and “expanding the culture” is not the same. Esp when you don’t even care or know anything ABOUT the culture, last, Everybody uses the same argument, but shows the ignorance. “I’m sure when you was coming up you wasn’t rocking with the 80s and 60s music.” So the argument is always, “yall wasn’t rocking with your OGs either.” FALSE. Just listen to HipHop from the 80s, it sounds like a new flavor of BLACK MUSIC from the 70s. Listen to music from the 90s, you not only still hear Al Green, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, etc, but you also hear 90s emcees collabing with the dopest from the 80s. LNobody was outright just dissing and disrespecting the legends. FALSE. Now it’s cool to troll and disrespect. But, really it don’t matter. Because the top selling hot artists is still true to the roots. Drake going to battle rap functions, doing tributes to The Wu. Kendrick, Cole, Wale, KRIT, you already know. Even Meek keeps it true. It’s all perception. If you only rely on radio and the club to hear the real, it’s not there.

    Jaquae to Lord Jamar: "i'm sure you weren't rocking with the 80s or 60s music, you know what im sayin, you had to create somethin"
    Me: True, but the difference here is that we didn't shy away from advises from our elders... we showed love, admiration and respect to the guys that came before us.
    BIG and Pac had their 90s style but that didn't stop them from showing love and respect to the old school cats from the 80s, something that most of your generation isn't doing.
    Sure, you're quick to agree with me when I say part of it is our generation's fault for not educating our youths but lets be real, a lot of youths from your generation don't want ANY advises from anyone. They're attitude is more like, 'Yo you had your day pops, i'm doing it my way".

    Unfortunately rap should have categories just like rock music. You have hard rock, soft rock, Metal, punk rock etc..,, I feel like rap should have that- , Trap , Hardcore, Dance rap, political, etc..,, Back in the day different types of rap all existed together- you could have De La Soul, Public Enemy, A Tribe called Quest, EPMD, RED MAN, NWA, Queen Latifah and Luke all playing on the radio in the same day and everybody would be happy with it!! In fact a lot of different types of groups could do shows together and they would sell out all the time!! Radio now gets stuck on the same shit too much!!

      Shoot....when I'm gettin' right for work on any given mornin', I may literally bump The Message, Mama Said Knock..., Life's a B!tch, Slow Down, Gin & Juice, Follow the Leader, Bonita Applebum, Time 4 Sum Axshun & so on, appreciating such a hip hop gumbo!!! 👂💗😁

    I remember a very similar debate going on in 1996-1998 with comparing new artists like Mobb Deep, Puffy/Mase, No Limit with Run DMC, Rakim, and KRS. Back then old school was considered the early to mid 80s. And new school was Nas and Jay z.

  • @jzw55
    @jzw55 5 лет назад

    It’s actually funny that there’s an argument cause essentially everyone vibe to the same things. The most respected artists of the new school actually do old school stuff. Drake, Kendrick, & J. Cole we all can agree are the most influential artists currently. J. Cole is a combo of Nas, Jay Z, Tribe Called Quest sonically. Drake don’t mumble. He just makes dope songs & I’d probably compare him to LL COOL J in his universal appeal. Kendrick is probably a combo of all of them

  • @jman1562001
    @jman1562001 6 лет назад +1

    The real point is the lyrical content and substance PERIOD. TBH that's a state of mind/information thing because not everyone has the agenda to do that esp in this era. For someone like KRS-One or Public Enemy type, the whole point of their movement ( as with others) was to kick knowledge and spread information in lyrically creative ways. For whatever reason the young artist weren't passed down that legacy and/or really take to it. I don't think young rappers today are really sitting in the studio really with the mindset of crafting a body of work with a message or deeper meaning. That element is the core essence that gives rap the credibility as a an artform. Aside from the theatrics and the gimmicks, the content and lyrical wordplay lends itself to skill. There is a place for that in the mainstream but it has to be married to song structure and melody. Kendrick and Cole balance the content with song structure. Their should be more or a balance for the audience, but DJs are to blame in a lot of cases for this. DJ was the curator in many respects, and the removal of the DJ killed Hip-Hop IMO!!!

  • @jlj777
    @jlj777 6 лет назад

    Let these youngsters have their fun and do what they do just like all of the people before them. Things change and will never be the same as yesterday and 10 years from now these youngsters will be saying how different the game is. It is all part of social engineering to keep people at odds in this type of music and in every institution that the powers that be has their hands in.

    Not ONLY did we respect our elders but we showed respect by integrating their music into our new sound hence, SAMPLING!
    A FUNDAMENTAL of Hip Hop!
    You can't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been. And as others have said we do reach out to the youth but troll consciousness has taken them over. The one thing Hip-hop was and intended on doing was bringing everyone together but the mentality now is very crabs in a barrel. For me to get shine or recognition I have to bash other rappers ...even though I sound JUST LIKE THEIR @$$. Hip-hop is and was also a reflection of the environment. Remember when we were growing up, we had tools in school such as Phonics and the RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) Campaign. When we went home even on Summer Breaks there were book reports that were MANDATORY! Even if we weren't learning we were because you had Elders who repeated and tested you on not only History but Current Events. This generation are products of what the school system became. Lack of funding, phonics taken from schools (so they don't hear how the words ACTUALLY sound / being able to enunciate "mumble rap"), and aging out kids. Advancing kids solely on their age NOT their educational level was NEVER a good idea but the powers that be WANT to keep folks ignorant. So NOW this is what we're being subjected to. And if you bring these topics up to this generation(not all but most) watch them get MEGA tight and offended because they can't articulate their feelings or they may say something hurtful and lash out as a defense mechanism because the truth is an ugly thing sometimes. Nor do they have the patience or (sometimes) the maturity that we WANT TO KICK SCIENCE with them, to let them see that society let them down and see that partially it's not their fault. We're not bashing them we're here attempting to enlighten them.

    If all that matters to you is the beat, then STFU trying to say who the g.o.a.t. is! In your case, it should be the producer! Why not just listen to instrumentals then? A dope beat is cool, but that don't have shit to do with who is the best rapper/lyricist. Period.

    It's NOT Millenials aka GEN Y. We're 1980-1995. I'm born in 1989 and I can remember hip hop from 1993 onwards. I had the pleasure of having older brother and sister born in 1981 and 1983 respectively so I got to learn more than others my age.
    But I'd say my year was definitely the beginning of the end. At least those born in 1995 would at least remember
    Kanye " College Dropout" as they were 9yrs old that year in 2004.
    It's GEN-Z, the iGen those born from 1996 onwards in general.
    but some kids born in the late-90s onwards study the oldschool and are talented. So not ALL of them are bad, Joey Badass is great example.

    There are some new songs I like but that's mainly cause of the beat and the hook. When I go buy a mixed cd, I have to take my 19yo daughter with me so I can make sure I get the right songs cause I rarely have no idea what the name of the song is and the artists all sound alike.

    If u watched Straight Out Of Compton, the older musicians didn’t accept rap. Every new generation is going to be questioned. Now raps are “too real” and considered as self incriminating music. Before that was Lil Pump, Yatchy etc were considered mumble rap. With every new sound comes with a generation before not understanding it.

    Something they did not touch on which is what my thing is with new school, every coast sound the same. Back then you knew east coast even by the beats alone, west coast etc... to me every rapper today sound like south rappers and Im from the south so I know. Thats what LJ is getting at "no variety". Thats like Wu Tang rapping over a trap beat, Cypress Hill doin crunk music. I dont need to know the name, I know Too-Short the moment I hear him, Scarface, Snoop, Pac, Cube, Big, 8-Ball & Mjg, Pimp C, B-Real, , E-40, Eazy E, even Kid Frost, etc...today everybody sound the same.

    Aite.....
    Clearing throat.......
    Hip hop....is the culture...
    Rap is one sector of the hip hop culture...
    Lamest terms.... hip hop is a house
    And rap is a room in the hip hop house.....
    We are missing Graffiti, break dancing,beat boxing ,turntabilism , cyphers.....
    That's what's missing...but....we still have street entrepreneurs, Street fashion, jewelry, females,....it's overflooded the art or culture rather.........we need leaders in this culture that understand through experience,humility,self control, eloquent speakers and doers that can make this culture In their 1% to rally and stand strong but not dance all the time.......it's common sense people...call a dog a dog etc...
    Speak to me in your lyrics to encourage or inform or for the people to acknowledge and stop the singing...leave that to people that really sing and take singing serious and not for popularity.....anyone that feels different....do the knowledge first don't speak out of turn .....Peace....P.S. some idiot is going to thumbs down or negatively speak against what I just said....watch...
