"Hi, I'm Othais and this" *Wheek* "isn't a rifle, it's Crozier. And he's going to go over the features of this rifle over here for us."
I have a Kar 98k with a 1916 Spandau receiver...the fact that it survived the Great War, the Weimar Republic, the second world war AND 'Bubba' is amazing and makes it one of my favorite rifles in my collection...
@ Especially 'cos he (that particular Bubba) was most certainly white....
@ ...most definitely...in fact that it survived 'Bubba' was the most amazing of all its survival stories!!!

whats the German equivalent of Bubba
You know, it's not too often that you see Mae having a look on her face that says " What do you mean, there's still more ammo?!"
Here we go again with 20 rounds.
I have a Gewehr 98 that was manufactured by Oberspree in 1916, right before the factory was bought out by DWM. It also received the 1920 government stamp so it's likely it saw service with the Reichswehr in the Wiemar Republic before it was sent off to to Spain for use during the civil war. This rifle definitely got around and saw a lot of history!
5:44 "thats a weird lookin horse."
I laughed out loud at that. It sounds like it was added "in post" rather than actually scripted. Also, othais has never sounded more southern than that 1 simple sentence. LOL
Designed by committee, or so the joke goes.
Man, I didn't even notice it the first time.
Such 'horses' were once stationed in Southern California for use of the U.S. Cavalry.
Research U.S. Army Camel Corps.
I mean, it certainly ain't a normal looking horse

With you reminding me of the tgewehr, i thought of a completely useless but verry fun idea of a tgewehr with that 25r mag.
@@davitdavid7165
Actually, a T-Gewehr with a 25-round mag isn't all that completely useless of an idea. Especially when the enemy tanks keep coming and coming and...😉
@charlestaylor253 nah. You need to carry the thing to the taks and get up close and there is a big chance you would die in the process with the tgewehr. A 25r 13mm would be incredibly heavy, it would make going prone very difficult and the extra cost of producing that thing would exhaust the German factories even faster, leading to fewer guns reaching the front. And because of the recoil of the thing, each crew could only fire a single digit amount of rounds, so even in deal conditions it would be useless weight.
All I will say is: there is a reason the later anti tank rifles were given a capacity of around 5 max and even the barret 50 is issued with only a 10rounder.
I watch these when I am running of the treadmill. Mae's shooting segment was so long that I ran a half mile during it.

@@wierdalien1 was it a joke? cause it totally wooshed me.
@@GIITW.5OKC no, i was saying like good job, speedy running
Huh, 804,5 metres in 4 min 25 s...that makes it 3 m/s, or 10,9 km/h. You're good, my average is about 10,5 km/h. (I don't have a treadmill, I just use the plain boring countryside.)
Watching this with a Bluetooth speaker in the shed where I clean my guns. My wife was taking the dog out right at the point Mae was loading the rifle. All she heard was a females heavy breathing coming from my speaker, and so she burst in. Then boom! "Oh just some more gun porn? ", "yes dear"
You see kiddos, when an Air Service Rifle and a Gewehr 98 love eachother very much...
This was clearly the last rifle they shot that day, holy crap Mae seems exhausted
Salute her sacrifice....of shooting 100+ year old unicorns most people will never even see.
These episodes are thoroughly researched, well presented, interesting and educational, but the best part is always the final scene and sound effects of the "WAR WERE DECLARED" clips.
It's what I watch for, no question.

"By 1915 the Gewehr 98 cost the government roughly 65 Marks to produce. At Oberspree, it cost only... 250. The project was an abysmal failure."
I saw something like that coming from the lead-in about what the factory was meant to accomplish, and it _still_ clobbered me. :)

You got the bayonet out on the lightbox, showed it off... but you didn't hand it over to Mae to give a live fire demonstration :(
How will we know if it's accurate and effective?
While we sneacky British , with a short rifle, had a cunning plan! We made a longer bayonet! Which to quote, as the Brtish always do on these occasions, Lance Copral Jones of the Home Gaurd 'They don't like it up'em'!
The German rifles are not sighted with the bayonet on, the idea is they would be fitted for a trench charge and otherwise kept on the person as a knife. Some other nations did sight the rifle with bayonet in order for it to remain fitted during line fire, this changes the point of aim fairly drastically (not just weight, balance and harmonic, but aerodynamic effects from gas charge ahead of the bullet).
Part of the rational here is that unlike earlier conflicts most WW2 guns where carried with live rounds in the magazine, so a soldiers reaction if surprised (even fairly close) was to make a shot (maybe even with handgun). Likewise at short ranges when using a battle-sight notch the shift in point of aim mattered far less than long ranges where a bayonet provided no functional advantage, but still made already forwards heavy guns even moreso, and would need to be fitted when spotting an unexpected distant opponent before you could start shooting accurately, as marching with bayonet installed (especially longer types) is generally an unfavorable concept.
@@SheepInACart He was talking about the knife itself...not the gun WITH the knife
Mae needs to affix bayonet and charge a sandbag while shouting every now and then.
Hey, I just want to say that I love this show, I just found it today, which today being the 8th of November, and I plan to go through and watch every other episode (I have watched at least a half dozen or more already...). While I love shows like this that talks about historical weapons, I am a bit more knowledgeable on WW2 weaponry than I am on WW1 Weaponry, I take every chance afforded me to learn new things, especially on topics I know little or nothing about. Thank you very much Othias and Mae, and I will look forward to future episodes. :)
in the book "All Quiet on the Western Front" from Erich Maria Remarque, it is written that the recruts got taken away the saw bajonets from older Front soldiers so that the dont get killed
immediately when being captured.
True, the allies saw the sawbacks as a warcrime
They saw it as a violation of the 1908 Hague Convention, which banned bayonets with more than one cutting edge. However, the Germans viewed the US M1897 Trench Shotgun as being a violation, because of it using non-jacketed lead ammunition. They also considered the seldom-encountered .455 British "Manstopper" non-jacketed pistol round as a violation for the same reason...
Othias:" that's a weird looking hoarse" 🤣 I don't know why I laughed so hard at this🤣🤣
Always wondered why the Mauser didn't get a 10 round mag?
Great video Othias and Mae and crew, thanks a bunch.
After the initial boost, you’re still loading 5 round stripper clips
Othias: Of course it a weird looking horse! It was designed by a Military Aquisition board (Old English joke)
The one I heard was that a camel is a horse designed by a committee. I think I like yours better.
FWIW,back when the Bomarc missile was in use, certain of the people involved with the project called it "the civil service missile". In that it would not work and you could not fire it. Oof.

That dust cover comes in real handy when you have the rifle flipped over and are trying to shove the magazine in.
War were declared: 5:55
This is the fastest war were declared in the series thus far I believe
FWIW, In the Pederson Device episode, WWD is at 2:13 or so. (In the BAR & Chauchat it's at around 4:35).
I think the Pedersen Device episode has the quickest War Were Declared.
Waiting for an episode where it starts
"Hi, I'm Othias, and war were declared."
@Devin McLeod Yeah, MP 18 was 1:25 IIRC. Definitely and deservedly the fastest, though that episode aired after this comment.
Where there any Karabiners equipped with the 25 round magazine? Seems like it'd be more useful on a shorter rifle used in close quarters when it's more difficult to find cover to reload rather than on a long and bulky rifle used at range.
That would be some Edwardian Gucci gear.
Bless you Mae for taking one for the team
God I love this channel thanks for giving me insight on this magazine extension. Your channel is the ONLY channel and place I have found useable information about this reproduction pice. I’ll definitely be getting one for my 1903 Springfield
We too are very glad to have watched this episode.
This gun is so cool. I would have done it sliiiightly differently. Shorter mag that would allow for easy removal and prone firing. Probably 10 or 15 rounds? 21st century hindsight is 20/20. I love the dust cover!!
Miss Mae is a tough young lady to endure all of that. Tough and pretty as well. Bless you for that endurance trial. You did a great job.
It's for science, eventually recoil will be measured in chest displacement.
A nod to Mr Nambu....and to the Type 38.....a great followup to your already great 98 Mauser episode.
"spits gesosh meed kearn" ... had to replay this 3 times - the grin in my face is still holding on as I'm typing... ;-)
To watch Othais wrestle with foreign language is one of the highlights of this show - at least for me
Eurgh, the sound it makes when you cycle it sets my teeth on edge.
Great channel! Great content! Great dynamic in presenation! Appreciate the show!
It was good to meet you and your wife at the rally. I'll be listening to more primer episodes at the plastics factory. Thanx for all the research you do.

LOVE Mae’s BIG SMILE firing the trench cleaner shotgun...
Love the sound affects from war were declared! You should make a video of all the clips!! Cheers!
Love you two, Mae is fearless...... even this old wolf gets banged up popping off a 25 rd mag, kept waiting for that heavy sigh cause I know exactly what those last few feel like :)
Mae is tough as hell and deserves a good drink after all those rounds down range.
The clock went back an hour giving you an extra hour to watch C&Rsenal before bed. NICE!
The most important observation is seeing Mae sitting there holding the rifle at port arms and looking at her left hand and thinking
" why doesn't somebody put a ring on that girls finger" . Brains, wit, humor, personality, looks, beauty..... lots of beauty, and she shoots !!! Rather well I might add. Unless it's by choice, somebody needs to step up.
About the magazine, curious that there are no reinforcing ribs on it as the Air model one has and most all other magazines do. Also curious is why someone would go to all the time and trouble to develop and make such an obscure after market item. And that dust cover seems to be a telegraph to announce where the enemy should concentrate their fire. Way to noisy, added weight, slows down the cycling of the action and ultimately does little to keep out any form of water based debris
Round of applause for Mae. Took courage to show off that upper body workout, proper arm and shoulder workout
Thank you, thank you, thank you guys! As a collector and student of “gewehrs” (as i call them, referring to Gew98’s) this actually was really good. I learned some stuff. Would LOVE to talk about these with you....
War Were Declared compilation needed!
Another informative episode as always.
And man, Mae was just exuding the same feeling towards the end of shooting the 25 rounds like with the Air Service, just make it stop.😂
34:59 And if only that other ultimate Mauser was put into mass production. That would be interesting to see and compare to its contemporaries. The German Arisaka.
Holy shit that thing is super tactical.
Big fan of Mae !
It was a pleasure to meet you aswell Othias
There was similar rifle In NRA museum, it was fitted with both dust cover, box magazine and additionaly low-magnification optical sight fixed on "roller coaster". I wonder how common was these modifications in frontline trenches.
Thank you much as allways. I like the way you present the information. I'm slowly making it through all the ones here and truly like them. Peae love & jello. TomCat
I spent most of the time Mae was shoot just cheering her on. That was a ton of shooting.
I enjoy your presentation.

SmK isnt Sierra Match King? 🤔
Mae deserves a raise after this episode!
Thank you oatboy
Too cool!
This thing looks like what would have happened if someone in Mauser R&D considered the possibility of a zombie apocalypse to me. Which, given the provenience of the design, tickles me greatly.
Mae is great a shooting machine!👍
You really need to do some new episodes focused around the berthier rifles. Especially the 07/15 since it was a primary rifle of the french military in ww1
They did it's episode 2 but they have gone back and re done the earlier episodes so probably in the works.
@@LavitosExodius Thats why i said they need to do NEW episodes
That loading sequence really calls the entire concept into question for me
That’s a lot of time and effort to expend *in a firefight*
You don't need to do it that way, I have an original and it works a lot easier than this reproduction, fill it up with stripper clips and good to go. Also I can lie prone with it isn't a hassle i suspect my arms are a bit longer than Mae.
You guys make me want to move to South Carolina.
One of my Buddies had one of those "Trench" Mags... Also a repro, and also kind of a bear to load... Like you guys said... "Cool Idea", but would like to know if the original ones functioned better...
Keep up the Great Work... 👍👍👍
I like the dust cover.
Great!! 😀👏👏👏
We need a series about bladed weapons from WWI .
I have lots of respect for Mae. First things first, she is not afraid to sholder this beast of a gun, and second she is beautiful.😙
That's a useful accessory! You can grind up your pepper for your sauerkraut while you fight.
But what the Gewehr 98 doesn’t need? The box magazine. It’s too fiddly.
The trench mag seems like a good addition to rifleman in the machine gun teams. They can better cover the gunner and loader when reloading or if they need to clear jams or what have you.
fabulous episode on great topic : thank you !
Now I want a book where Sam I Am tries to get a German requisitions officer to like one of these. Thanks, Othias.
haha.....poor May, you could tell she was thinking "when is this bloody thing going to end!"
I also have an Ersatz bayonet made in 1917 and modified in the 30s to fit a Turkish M38 Mauser. I've even seen German Ersatz bayonets lent to Turkey being modified for M1 Garands!
05:44 - Such 'horses' were once stationed in Southern California for use of the U.S. Cavalry.
Would love to see the 'fixes' you did to get it to feed better
I wonder how valuable original dust covers are. I picked up a 1915 Erfurt Gew98, in about 90% condition with original dust cover and partial original sling for $125 at an auction several years ago.
20 rounds later, still lights up as the sun. thats how you know its a good gun!
MMM Loading looks super simple.. Mae was huffing and grunting getting the last couple rounds in. That dust shield looks like it could get easily damaged or fall off, yet does seem effective. Overall this thing almost looks like a Bubba'd Mosing ironically... Like someone converted a 91/30 to a detachable archangel mag. Looks like a chore to shoot.
The box magazine is pretty stupid on this rifle, but the bolt dust cover is pretty slick.
I did a little research on the colonies, and the 98/05 wasn’t there. It started with the long 98 and than the KS98 became standard issue.
One of these guns you shoot on Sunday and load all week.
Спасибо) Хорошее оружие, хорошие ведущие)
Nice shooting, a lack of smoke when you use that dust cover
the mag chain is Mauser's OG gangsta bling
I just want to say, I'm glad I work nights!
zeuk416b I wish I had the time to watch RUclips on nights. It’s usually just as if not more busy then days for me
Good God, it sounded like Mae was cycling a coffee grinder. BANG *grind grind* BANG *grind grind* etc.
25 rounds of 8mm Mauser on a steel buttplate like that! Made respect for you. Damn if I would I'll stick with my .30-30
I think this serves as a good example of when more is too much in bolt action.
27:10 Lindybeige will be proud to hear this.
That’s funny you mention deer cause I’m taking my Garand Saturday and I’m taking my gewehr 98 Sunday providing I get one Saturday with the Garand
I lost count, Mae. Could you do that again?
I have a 1903 Springfield made October 1918 with a magazine similar to this gewehr, do you have any information on it?
That was more like the “(Two) Minute(s) of Mae - check out C&Rsenal if you want to learn more….”
Mae is so lovely.
RIP mae's shoulder once again. Same with the air service 1903.
I once read someone's opinion that in WW1 America fielded the best target rifle (03 Springfield), Germany fielded the best hunting rifle (K98 Mauser), & the English the best battle rifle (Lee Enfield).
I have not seen anything to make me think differently.
I'd argue the 1917 fielded by America is the best battle rifle.
The M1903 isn’t much of a target rifle given it’s sights. Also it’s a mauser clone.
The best target rifle was probably the Ross. For battle rifle, I'd probably go 1917. I'd take a sub gun over all of them though.
Mae is a trooper, I'd have put a pad on that stock.
