I clicked auto (English generated) translation, and what I take from basque is that they really like sentimental spoons and they all wish to establish the moon. Fascinating people.
For the most part I think speakers of most European language are able to pick up a recognizable word here and there when they hear someone speaking another European language yet I did not hear a single recognizable word spoken by the girls. It almost sounds Romantic until you listen closer and don't hear anything familiar. It's truly incredible that we are able to listen to the last European language not of the Indo-European family tree. What a beautiful sounding language.
Listen closely. They say: identidad (identity), sentimiento (feeling/sentiment), cultura (culture), tradición (tradition), motivación (motivation), teórico (theorical), creatividad (creativity), artístico (artistic), música (music), proyectos (projects), etc. And some that are Spanish or doesn't have a similar English equivalent: o sea (I mean), en plan (I mean/like), asignatura (subject)... Btw, I wrote them in Spanish, as I'm not Basque, I'm from Southern Spain.
@@arianam9977 yes a few words were similar to Spanish but most of them does not have any similarities, we see that in English also, creatividad, creativity, motivación, motivation, identidad, identity, they called it cognates, and doesn't mean that they are related. Basque is a romance that is not related to any other languages
Klingon is modelled after Tlingit at the North-West coast of America. However compare Klingon to Tlingit and Klingon really falls short and could be considered laughably simplistic. The guy who invented Klingon was an expert for Native American languages.
The Basque language came first. That is because it preceded the arrival of the postulated ancestor of all languages that are Indo-European in Europe: Proto-Indo European (PIE).
in Basque, they learn both the local language which is Basque and as well as Spanish. for those that speak and understand Spanish, you can tell in the very beginning they have a rough pronunciation when it comes to Spanish. But their Basque is 100%.
I disagree, their Castilian is natural ,it is their Euskera (Basque) which is forced. Even when they speak Euskera you can hear the influence of Castilian in their words.
@@dariomartinez459 No no. Thats false. They speak gipuzkera a dialect from the province of gipuzkoa and in this dialect they use A LOT of loan words from spanish. But they are fluent speakers and they use this language in everyday life. Me for example i speak bizkaiera that comes from the province of bizkaia that is completly different, mostly the verbs and the conjugation is different. Ah and also they dont sound spanish at all
@@selaud3229 like it or not it is the truth and even foreigners can hear it. Until the birth of Basque nationalism under Sabino Arana the vast majority of people spoke mainly Castilian and that is still present in the sound. Unless you go to remote isolated villages in the pyrenees and speak to uneducated farmer you won't get a feel for pure Euskera.
@@dariomartinez459 hahaha thats not true. My grandfathers grandma was rich af and she spoke euskera same as all my family. The only ones who didnt where those immigrants who worked for them. The only time that they didnt speak it was during Franco dictartorship so stop saying lies. Btw my family lived really close to bilbao so stop making up things. Also if u think that basque sounds castillian because of that you are wrong. Mainly because castillian was created in la rioja. Basque speaking territory at that time. (The first written form of castillian appears alongside euskera and latin). Due to that geographical influence castillian has 5 vowels they have the "rr" and the "ch" sound etc. So we can say that castillian sounds like basque (actually the word izquierda (and not siniestra) comes from euskeras ezkerra (with the same meaning) which literally means "wrong hand".
@@selaud3229 Basques have been Spanish for centuries and although somehow you have maintained your language to deny the influence of the national language and one of the world's strongest languages is lunacy. If the nationalists hadn't forced the language in the autonomous region it would be close to dead by now and even the standard Basque spoken today was an artificial creation made by nationalists because there never was a standard Basque before. The reality is that Basque would not survive naturally just like all minor languages, but denying Spanish influence is illogical and false and only in close minded separatists are such beliefs held. Most Basques except the most ignorant speak Castilian and even if they speak Euskera you can't deny that each language influences the other as in any bilingual person.
It's funny how i (Moroccan guy living in Moroco) can tell the difference between Spaniards and Basques just by their names, Basque is really different, not from Spanish only ... but all other Latin/Indo-European languages !
@@boeloevanboeloefontein spanish pronoinced X as the basque until not that long ago. Castillian origiated right next to basque and therefore its the language with the biggest influence on it
The Spanish intonation is very strong here. I would like to think that the kids here were given intonation/pronunciation training as they progressed with their Basque. I studied Japanese, and my Professor spent as much time teaching us the correct intonations as he did with teaching us grammar, vocabulary etc.
selaud Spanish and basque have no connection . Spanish is a language that was born from Vulgar Latin that the roman invaders brought to the Iberian Peninsula. But since the Basque Country was well hidden in the Pyrenees the basque language didnt become extinct like all the other languages that were used in the Iberian Península before the Romans arrived . However in recent times especially in the last century there were efforts to eliminate all the other languages in Spain besides Spanish . This may explain why there was a large decrease of people who can speak basque and how many who speak it it’s as a second language which could explain the Spanish accent due to them probably learning Spanish and due to the fact the Spanish is the most spoken language in Spain and the fact that all the other languages in Spain besides basque are languages that share the ancestor of latin
Carrot Boy Before Roman rule, most of Iberia spoke languages related to Basque. Spanish was formed from the Latin vulgate that developed to accommodate vasconic pronunciation and intonation, similar to the development of French as a Latin vulgar influenced by Gaulish. Vasconic languages only survived in the Basque Country because of its geographic isolation.
Chris G.k And do you speak like those scripts from 1430 BC? No, didn't think so. Languages are always changing and have been evolving for thousands of years, and so has your Greek.
Correction: Greek is one of the oldest attested languages but actually not in fact the oldest. You have to know, a variety of other Indoeuropean languages such as Hittite and Luwian were actually in fact scientifically confirmed 100% to be undeniably atteted first. Hey hey hey! I am a Hellene. I don't have to disort information however to delude myself with nonsense "the first language script is Greek" and I do my research. No dreams now, only good sleep. P.S: We don't actually know the origin of Albanian but it is true to assume it was the Illyrian language that was clearly in fact evolved. Still we can't know since we know so little about Illirian but the similarities are strinkingly apparent. BOTH Albanian and Greek were scientifically proven as Indoeuropean languages, of steppe horse peoples that migrated Southwest, South, Far Southeast, Northwest, North and eventaully spread their languages in the world (English, Spanish, French). Still Albanian is completely unrelated to the discussion and was farted into it from nowhere. If anything, Tamils OBSESSIVELY claim Tamil is the oldest language in the world... it's verily however their dumb bullshit. ----- Please don't try to equate anymore Greek with Basque. Basque is a language isolate, a preciously epic diamond of Stone Age and First Europeans before we raided their lands with our steppe languages.
True, it does have some similarities phonetically, and it's pretty safe to assume that the Kartvelian languages are much older than indo european languages, so i wouldn't be surprised if they actually were somewhat related (not directly of course, but since Basque is the only pre-PIE language in Europe, it wouldn't be TOO far off to assume that they might share a common ancestor or something, but that would probably go waaaay back

I am watching the movie Errementari right now and I realized it is subbed/dubbed in English, so I looked up the original language and it's in Basque. I have never heard of Basque before this, but I wish this movie was in Basque so I could hear it! Super interesting language. Especially because it has no Roman/Latin roots but originates in the mountains between France and Spain.
Aside from the auto translation in English (best described as Three Steps Sideways' comment see below), I felt like I was hearing Spanish. The rythm, the pronunciation. Funny, as when I listened to French people speaking Basque all I heard was French with new words.
this is why i envy European teens. Most are able to speak at least 2 other languages apart from their native language. Granted, i am a native Spanish speaker (who ironically speaks in a spanish accent despite being mexican) who grew up in the U.S, and learned French in high school and learning italian. But i do feel that i would've been at least fluent in italian now if i was taught the way Euro kids are teached

Basqologist Vahan Sarkisian published numerous books and studies between Armenian-Basque connection including a first ever Armenian-Basque dictionary in 2001 (identified almost 600-shared parallel words between the two languages. I don't understand anything except english but I guess there is meeting Welsh boys and Basque girls. Can anyone of these two nations say, how your languages are related to each other. Can Basque understand anything of Weish and vice versa. Cause both of these nations are very close in DNA tests.
+bob1988y Probably not. Welsh, as a celtic language, is part of the Indo-European language family. AFAIK Basque today is considered the last holdout of the European language that was present prior to immigration of the Indo-Europeans. It is definitely not Indo-European. Their situations are similar in that they are both part of a language community that is pushed towards the western sea by a new language culture pushing in from the continent.
my mind really wants to hear the romance language roots, but there are non. even though the language is spoken primarily in two countries were romance languages are the main languages. Interesting
I'm Brazilian and I've been watching a lot of videos of galician and basque language, and honestly both sounds like spanish, written galician is almost identical to written portuguese, but spoken galician sounds just like a spaniard speaking portuguese with a strong accent. And basque sounds totally like spanish to my ears, if I heard someone speaking basque on the street I would just assume it was a spaniard, because it sounds exactly like spanish. Seems like every dialect in Spain ends up sounding like castellano.
It sounds like spanish, but it hasn't any conection to an other language. The grammatic, the way you forme sentences, ist quite unique. Many "modern" words are taken from spain, but one example how simillar are the two languages. One in spanish = uni, in basque one= bat.
NJSM1995 yeah that's very interesting, I've seen texts in basque and is really different and unique. I dont know If basque influenced Spanish pronunciation or If was the other way around. By the way thanks for the information
With all due respect, those are not dialects sir, they are different languages. In the case of Basque it is from a completely different language family(it's own ancient one). Galician and Portuguese used to be the same language but now have small differences in lexicon and many differences in phonetics, but Portuguese came from Galicia, not the other way around. All the languages in Iberia started in the north and spread southward.

Thank you

Yes,it does sound just a little bit like Spanish. But other than some of its, spund,it,s really quite different from either Spanish,or French, fridnds.
sleetskate no way
Waldir Pimenta you are the real mvp
There are a fair number of words borrowed from the romance languages. Not enough to help much .... :D but they are there...
Uralics though
Finnish, Hungarian and Estonian are not Indo-European languages either
@@arianam9977 yes a few words were similar to Spanish but most of them does not have any similarities, we see that in English also, creatividad, creativity, motivación, motivation, identidad, identity, they called it cognates, and doesn't mean that they are related. Basque is a romance that is not related to any other languages
Basque sounds beautiful, I had seen it written and I expected it to sound like Klingon.
lol xD
Klingon is modelled after Tlingit at the North-West coast of America. However compare Klingon to Tlingit and Klingon really falls short and could be considered laughably simplistic. The guy who invented Klingon was an expert for Native American languages.
Some people say the self same thing about Welsh.
LOL :P
I search to hear basque spoken of old people, who remember the original basque. the young people speak basque with very strong spanish accent
thanks for explanation
Which came first, Spanish or Basque language?
The Basque language came first. That is because it preceded the arrival of the postulated ancestor of all languages that are Indo-European in Europe: Proto-Indo European (PIE).
Thedoctor19000 Thanks
Spanish sucks, they talk too fast
it sounds like a finn or an estonian speaking spanish
Exactly, LOL
funny you say that, I am hungarian and a spanish guy told meg our language sounds a lot like basque.
@@cecilianagy3562 really? Az szep.
Cecília Nagy its because hungarian, finnish, and estonian languages are all uralic, so they're all similar
Hell no! XD they just sound spanish
it's been 8 years since this video came out, i wounder where are these boys and girls now in life
True
Basque is so cool and beautiful, I need learn this language.
that's an authentic Basque!
Nahia7.7 This is native basque!!
in Basque, they learn both the local language which is Basque and as well as Spanish.
for those that speak and understand Spanish, you can tell in the very beginning they have a rough pronunciation when it comes to Spanish.
Sounds like a mix of japanese, spanish and one of the slav languages
Basque sounds like you can't exactly fix the tracking on your Spanish VCR.
It's funny how i (Moroccan guy living in Moroco) can tell the difference between Spaniards and Basques just by their names, Basque is really different, not from Spanish only ... but all other Latin/Indo-European languages !
Like Xavier, for instance. (The X is pronouced as either a KS or a Z)
@@boeloevanboeloefontein spanish pronoinced X as the basque until not that long ago. Castillian origiated right next to basque and therefore its the language with the biggest influence on it
Meh....surnames go by region, so it’s easy to tell if someone is from Biscay whereas other surnames wouldn’t sound Biscayan. Still Basco though
Basques are spaniard
Duh 😏
The Spanish intonation is very strong here. I would like to think that the kids here were given intonation/pronunciation training as they progressed with their Basque. I studied Japanese, and my Professor spent as much time teaching us the correct intonations as he did with teaching us grammar, vocabulary etc.
These girls sound like the real "old" basque. This is the real basque accent actually. Look at my surname :)
Fun fact. Spanish adopted the intonation and most of its pronunciation from basque, not the other way round.
That's simply how Basque in Hegoalde sounds. They have a perfect native phonology.
@@josealbarran7202 That is a fun fact actually
Spanish intonation is not strong at all
The way they pronounce the words it sounds Spanish but it has no connection to that language
spanish sounds like basque. spanish (castillian) was created by those basques who couldnt speak latin well enough
Yeah, the same way the girls speak in english.
selaud Spanish and basque have no connection . This may explain why there was a large decrease of people who can speak basque and how many who speak it it’s as a second language which could explain the Spanish accent due to them probably learning Spanish and due to the fact the Spanish is the most spoken language in Spain and the fact that all the other languages in Spain besides basque are languages that share the ancestor of latin
selaud oh also it’s believed that Basque is a prehistoric language one that was there before the undo European languages
Carrot Boy
Before Roman rule, most of Iberia spoke languages related to Basque. Spanish was formed from the Latin vulgate that developed to accommodate vasconic pronunciation and intonation, similar to the development of French as a Latin vulgar influenced by Gaulish. Vasconic languages only survived in the Basque Country because of its geographic isolation.
I am greek, my language is very old , but the Basque language are the Eldest Language in World.
Your language is very old?
Don't make me laugh so hard.
Surely there are older IE languages...
The Albanians claim the same about
their Shqip!
The first language to have script is the Greek . In 1430 BC Mycenean use the Arcadic Greek. The Albanian not exist in that time.
-----
Please don't try to equate anymore Greek with Basque. Basque is a language isolate, a preciously epic diamond of Stone Age and First Europeans before we raided their lands with our steppe languages.

I'm proud to be Basque
Can I ask what your blood type is?
For me Basque language sounds like very-very soft Georgian language
True, it does have some similarities phonetically, and it's pretty safe to assume that the Kartvelian languages are much older than indo european languages, so i wouldn't be surprised if they actually were somewhat related (not directly of course, but since Basque is the only pre-PIE language in Europe, it wouldn't be TOO far off to assume that they might share a common ancestor or something, but that would probably go waaaay back

this is why i envy European teens. Most are able to speak at least 2 other languages apart from their native language. Legend of the Basque people of a folklore in Rapcal valley, in Province of Navarra tells us that the leader of Basque was called „Haytor“ arrived from Armenia with seven sons found seven settlings in Navarra.... ancient manuscript found in that village gives evidence of its historic chronic and confirmed the spoken legend. In Basque language the name of their ancestor Haytor means „Received from Haya“ which exactly corresponds to Armenian „Hay tor“ meaning „a Grandson of Armenian“. The well-known German scientist Joseph Karst mentioned that too. Armenians ancestor Hayk had a grandson named Pask (in other Armenian dialects Bask). In Basque language an expression „haytoren seme“ exists which means „the son of Haytor“,

I'm Brazilian and I've been watching a lot of videos of galician and basque language, and honestly both sounds like spanish, written galician is almost identical to written portuguese, but spoken galician sounds just like a spaniard speaking portuguese with a strong accent.
