I really enjoyed this interview! Thank you. You mentioned Mahalia arrived in Chicago around 1927. Her aunt Hannah Clark-Robinson was already in Chicago, along with another aunt Alice Clark-Stamps. If I’m not mistaken (biographies, autobiography), she (Aunt Hannah) was a member of GSBC. So Mahalia probably joined before the 1940’s. But nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this. God bless you.
Hello Derrick: I have some interest information on this great lady of song, Ms. Mahalia. My uncle Lucius Curry (she mentions him in her biography by Lorraine) knew her very well and when I was growing up, he talked about Mahalia to me all the time. She also became friends with some of my cousins in Oklahoma City when she gave a concert in that town. During the concert in Oklahoma, she stayed with my cousin Jeannie in Oklahoma City, OK and they became good friends. Mahalia also gave a concert in the City of Shawnee, Oklahoma at the Okla. Baptist University. She had two gospel friends named Missionary Russaw and the great gospel singer Jessie Mae Renfro, both deceased. When she gave her concert in Hawaii, my Uncle Lucius was the promoter of that meeting. When I was a child, I didn't know who they were so excited about until later in my life.
Thank you so much for your work, and bless these ladys
That’s a glorious building.
