Lyrics:
I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead
I just need some place where I can lay my head
"Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?"
He just grinned and shook my hand, "no" was all he said
Take a load off, Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off, Fanny
And (and) (and) you put the load right on me
(You put the load right on me)
I picked up my bag, I went lookin' for a place to hide
When I saw Carmen and the Devil walkin' side by side
I said, "Hey, Carmen, come on let's go downtown"
She said, "I gotta go but my friend can stick around"
Take a load off, Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off, Fanny
And (and) (and) you put the load right on me
(You put the load right on me)
Go down, Miss Moses, there's nothin' you can say
It's just ol' Luke and Luke's waitin' on the Judgment Day
"Well, Luke, my friend, what about young Anna Lee?"
He said, "Do me a favor, son, won't you stay and keep Anna Lee company?"
Take a load off, Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off, Fanny
And (and) (and) you put the load right on me
(You put the load right on me)
Crazy Chester followed me and he caught me in the fog
He said, "I will fix your rack if you'll take Jack, my dog"
I said, "Wait a minute, Chester, you know I'm a peaceful man"
He said, "That's okay, boy, won't you feed him when you can"
Yeah, take a load off, Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off, Fanny
And (and) (and) you put the load right on me
(You put the load right on me)
Catch a cannon ball now to take me down the line
My bag is sinkin' low and I do believe it's time
To get back to Miss Fanny, you know she's the only one
Who sent me here with her regards for everyone
Take a load off, Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off, Fanny
And (and) (and) you put the load right on me
(You put the load right on me)
My father's last night on earth was Dec 18 1997. I got the call he was being made to be comfortable. I walked in an knew it was going to the last night. This was one of his favorite songs. So I loaded my portable CD player and played this song using my headphones. I set the headphones are N top of his head. My father absolutely relished this song into his soul. This was a comfort that I could offer as it was my way of saying goodbye pops...he laid there smiling. It was an unexpecting surprise because very few people knew it was his favorite song. He passed away 4 hours. I hope that this song resonated through eternity though the outer limits of time. Miss you always Dad. See you on the flip side.
Beautiful thing to do. Poignant

I hope you've listened to The Waltz version with the Staples singers. It takes the Weight to another level of amazing.
Aretha sang it with Duane Alman on steel guitar. She said get me “that white cat” who does steel guitar & everyone knew who she meant. I almost didn’t recognize the song as her take is so different. I didn’t even know she did it until I read Barack Obama’s playlist for his book “The Promised Land.”

@T Brown I grew up in Jacksonville, FL/ & Atlanta and had the greatest experience... Best childhood... had friends of different races, we all played together... I went to UF, and all was fine... I got into Construction and built homes for all kinds of successful people of many different races.... honestly, everything seemed great.
I lived all over the world, and I always felt America was the best.
Then, around 2010, things just started going downhill- fast.
I mean fast.
And here we are today.
These classic songs just remind me of a wonderful time.
People worked hard and truly seemed to want a better world.
Many expressed it in their songs, through stories and experiences.
For people to learn from and grow.
Now, I don't even know where to begin, but something tells me you already know.
We can live in joy and hope for the best, or live in fear and plan for the worse... either way, the story will play out the same.
Just wish we could all be good to each other as you casually mentioned.

God love you for loving your Nana so much ❤

How are they underrated ? They were elected to the Hall of Fame in 1994 ...

I'm 33 years old. My house is in the northeast section of Morioh, where all the villas are, and I am not married. I work as an employee for the Kame Yu department stores, and I get home every day by 8 PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink.
I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up.
I'm trying to explain that I'm a person who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although, if I were to fight I wouldn't lose to anyone.

They were working for Bob Dylan before that they were the Hawks with Ronnie Hawkins as the band leader

My youngest daughter, Annie, always thought that they were singing " take a load off, Annie" Whenever I would get my guitar out to practice, she'd be on her way to bed and she'd say, "Play the Annie song, Daddy". One of the best things about music is sharing it with others and having it touch them. It is especially thrilling if the ones that touched are your children. The "weight" is the load that we shoulder when we take on responsibility or when we try to do good. But it's also the heaviness that presses down on us when we fall into "sin" or wrestle with "temptation." It's a song about a universally human dilemma.
Hey there Rick, I hope that you're doing alright today. I've got a question for you, regarding this song. Here it is:
There's a point in this song that it basically says: "I looked up to find Carmen & the Devil walking side by side." So I said "Hey Carmen, c'mon let's go down town." Then Carmen said: "No, I've got to go, but my friend here can stick around."
So... the Devil... what happened with him? He was never mentioned before this moment in the song, nor was he mentioned after this moment in the song either. So, what's up with that? Any insight for me?
Thanks Rick. Keep Smiling... Cheers...

This song had such an impact on Dan McCafferty, Pete Agnew, Manny Charlton & Darrell Sweet that they named their band " Nazareth" .
That's cool to know. "Love hurts".at times like this.
This is Old School music, and it is a shame somewhat that this era missed the music back then, not to mention going to see the bands in their prime. Just an Old Head saying hello.
This song is one of those tunes that anybody who has had ups and downs in their lives can relate to. Life is journey and you just have to appreciate each day as it comes
It also has great touches of irony.

Greetings from another 1969 southern kid! If you really listen to or read the lyrics to this song, they make very little sense but it’s still a beautiful song and reminds us to “lighten up “ when we have troubles.
I’m a Panamanian immigrant who’s been in America since 7th grade. This song takes me right back to these days even though I never lived in that era. Just powerful!

This is one of the songs I played in my daughter's room when she was an infant. I was taking her to school one day in first grade. This song came on the radio. She said I like this song. I raised her right.

Lost my bestfriend today, he didnt even have a chance to meet his newborn son. He walked out of the house late in the night and met his maker in the morning. RIP Sheldon clear the way for the rest of us you tired, heavy hearted soul.

I hope he gets to see his sun some time in the afterlife
I have a feeling he is watching over both you and his son right now... I am so sorry for your loss, the memories and life you shared in friendship will always be with you.

Cracking song - no better opening line in any song. I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead. R.I.P Robbie
1972 seventeen years old hitchhiking to CA sitting around a campfire at the Big Sur signing this under the stars. Man what a memory.
We might have seen each other. I hitch-hiked to California in 1972 also.
U LIVED IT....
@@kraut5011 what part
@@kimo7447 Started in Houston, Texas where I had been managing a head shop. Hitch-hiked to Denver, Colorado. Spent a couple of weeks in Nederland, Colorado. From there to Hermosa Beach, California where I staid for two months with some friends that used to work at the head shop. Left there and hitch-hiked to San Diego. Then back to Houston and moved in with my ex-wife's sister and her girlfriend. Ended up meeting a girl and moving back to Nederland. I caught a Grateful Dead concert at the Hollywood Bowl while I was in Hermosa Beach.
Sounds like a helluva time. Im about to be 29 next month and havent done anything worth telling a story about...
Dad, see you on the flip side. I absolutely adore that statement. Great music. Shed a tear for that.

Perfect. This tune still gives me goosebumps. It's great to mellow out or crank the volume and cry. Wow what masters of their crafts
This and Candle in the Window by CCR 💙🎶🎶🎶
Definitely makes me miss My Daddy. He passed away March 2020 after a 7 year battle beating one Cancer to lose the fight to the 3rd kind... He was the best of the best, "Bad bad LeRoy Brown" didn't have nothing on my Dad 💪💙
We played this at my father's funeral. It was a favorite of his. I always think of him when I hear it.
I adore this song!! The piano takes breath away!!! I’m 82 and I’m dancing to I every day!!

I love this comment. 😊
Me too … specially the third chorus, third triplet country lick at 2:20 .. still haven’t learned to play it
That piano breaks me up
My childhood was sketchy, my mother was very sad for too much of our life, this song eased my soul, thank you, "The Band"!!!!

This was my dad's favourite band. He died when I was 5 months old, so I never really met him. I listen to this, and he knows it. That's when we talk. Miss you Pop.
Such an important piece. Full of humour and gravitas combined. Never tire of this gem ❤❤
This song is a masterpiece. Love "The Band".
This song makes me feel like scraping away space from existing in this world.
OY 'SUKE I AM WEEPING SHOULD I USE MY STAND [THE HAND] TO REMOVE THE TEARS?

When i was a teenager I i had this album on tape. R. I. P. Robbie
Bob Dylan couldn't have chosen a better band to tour with him in the mid 60s
They did not tour with him, he was a member
Bob Dylan also owns the publishing rights to this song and all their first album. Just found that out because of Bob selling his catalog for rumored to be 400 million. And guess whose first album was included in that deal.
Yes, and we have Bob and Ronnie Hawkins to thank for exposing us to The Band.
“He just grinned and shook my hand, no was all he said”
That line always cracked me up.
Best band ever. There will never be another THE BAND. Name says it all. Great song. Rest in Peace Robbie Robertson.
RIP Robbie Robertson. You & Levon gave us Roots Rock before it had a name. After all these years.... still Groovin' to The Band
I love this, me and dad put it on every night after work with some beers. Now he's near 60 and I'm mid thirties and it's a bonding moment ever time. One of my favorites if not my favorite. I love you guys, thanks for this great tune by The Band

Ever watch the dawn of the planet of the apes?
How could anybody give this a thumbs down. The band was one of the greatest and this song was always one of my favorites thanks for the memories.
Lots of ignorance in the world today.
lots of ignorance. truer words were never spoken.
The thumbs down represent only 2.5% of all votes. Probably rap and hip-hop fans. Focus on the positive! :)
agreed 100% , this song still holds up today
...then WHY the FUCK are they even TRYING to LISTEN to GOOD MUSIC?
Read a lot of the comments and it has a place in history for sure. I'm in my mid 70's and this song has been with me since it was first released. Timeless classic. R.I.P. Robbie. Your music lives on.

Watched Planet of the Apes recently, and heard this. It gave me memories from the good ol' days, back when times were simpler. I hope that this vaccine will work, and we can go back to those days. God bless all, hope you've been doing good.
