Rhiannon Giddens and her band doing Paul Simon's American Tune at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass on October 2, 2022. Note the slight change in lyrics in the last verse, personalized by Paul Simon for Rhiannon for her Newport Folk Festival Paul Simon Tribute performance.
Amazing cover
Talent always shows. Effortless, beautiful, no vocal tricks. Unwavering held notes. Wow.
This sure isn't a song you can just belt out, it's incredibly exposed. This is a song where restraint is the name of the game. I love this, flawless delivery.
a few weeks ago I had never heard of Rhiannon Giddens. I'm European and don't have much to do with the folk scene. Now I've seen quite a few concerts and performances and I'm completely irritated by such talent and dedication to the music. Paul Simon's American Tune leaves me speechless. The traditional music in the respective accents is also unbelievable. She is a musician with every cell and I hope that she will soon come to Germany and give concerts. Best regards.
Indeed, here amongst the people, folk music is in the shadows, we too just don't here it--not "top ten on the hit parade". But as you note, so very very good, so meaningful.
Me, as well - she blew me away at the tribute to Paul Simon several weeks back. She brings a new meaning to this wonderful song....which, incidentally, usually brings tears to my eyes.
Very touching- brings a new dimension to this fine Paul Simon song.
Wow - I hope Rhiannon records a studio version of this song. I'd play it on loop. Gorgeous and moving.
Great natural talent more people need to discover
This is the first I’ve heard of her
MysticFollower -- thanks for this. She is so quiet, and so beautiful.
She is awesome! Beautiful voice
So very, very talented.
I was just thinking that I wanted to here this song sang by Rhiannon ❤
I want to quadruple like…love!
Magnificent!
Absolutely beautiful. I am so glad Ms. Giddens sang the adapted lines, "We didn't come here on the Mayflower, We came in a ship in the blood red moon." Paul Simon's original lines are, "We come on the ship they call The Mayflower,
We come on the ship that sailed the moon." (not sure about the tense) Rhiannon's lines acknowledge the passage that brought African Americans here in chains. Now, how to acknowledge the people who were already here?
Those are better lyrics, I think. Really makes the song punch you on the feels. Also turns the line about "sing and American tune" into a big nod to about the 250 years of black, latin, and native American musicians shaping american music then attempts being made to write them out of history and take credit away from them.
👌
We come on the ship they call the Mayflower
We come on the ship that sailed the moon
Renandstimpy Ramaswamy Xtweeted this from Marmalade Lagoons Miniature Golf Resort: "...and so it was that later Steven Miller told his tale - that her face at first just ghostly turned a whiter shade of pale..."
Get the lyrics right
Paul Simon changed the lyrics for her. She performed this song with him at the Grammy's tribute to him and sang the same lyrics she sings here - standing right next to the guy who wrote the song.
Stunning
