Good question. They're not afraid to let their game music be gamey and stick to the old-school approach of bite-sized, melodic tunes that stick, as opposed to other studios going the more forgettable film-music route.

How do you create these? Do you do it mostly by ear? I’d love to know as I have attempted a few transcriptions like these but can’t seem to really pull it off as well as you do.
Yeah, I do it by ear and start at the very top and the very bottom first. I listen to rhythmical elements like drums and try to translate those in some shape, and fill out the middle registers that way - combined with countermelodies and chord notes that aren't in the melody or bass =) .
@@demantim That's amazing. I can't read sheet music so I also play by ear but I can't play the piano like you can. My brain only works with one hand at a time so I can mostly only play melody with chords
@@leahtheanimationfan40 Yeah, hand independence takes years to properly develop. Ultimately I'm constantly shifting my attention between the hands, letting one do a little part on autopilot while focusing on the other. This process shifts *all the time*.

I've got a 1890-something Bechstein grand piano in the living room! It's my therapeutic piano ;). For work, a digital piano is much, MUCH easier to record, plus it outputs MIDI which is a must for many of my viewers :). I do have a few older videos using the Bechstein, like the Yoshi's Island music box.
@@demantim This all makes total sense. I guess there is just something so relaxing about the sound of a "real" (non-digital?) piano that is not replicated with this style. Still a beautiful arrangement.
