  • Welcome to a new spinoff series to my extremely popular "History Of" series!
What better topic for the first episode of this new series than one of my favorite stores from my childhood! That would be none other than the old Disney Store at Oxmoor Center! It has quite an interesting history throughout it's nearly 30 year run from several character appearances to the many iconic and classic statues, and don't forget Mount Plushmore!!!

I used to go to the Louisville Disney Store A LOT whenever my mom, Mike, and I went to Oxmoor Center in Louisville to do some shopping. I also went there with my Dad whenever I went to Louisville with him. I sure do miss that.

There was a Disney Store at the mall I grew up going to in South Florida. It opened in either 1995 or 1996. It had it’s “plush mountain” in the center of the store. The entrance had the classic Mickey head from the cartoon openings, made of terrazzo.
It felt like they took a piece of the theme park and grafted it into the mall. It was a good way to get your Disney fix without having to drive 3 hours [to Disney World].
I found out that this one too closed in 2020. It had been 18 years since I moved away from the area by that point.

It's pretty sad to see a lot of Disney Stores shut down in shopping malls although there is still one that is active that I found, the one in the Ontario Mills Mall in Southern California. I actually kind of miss the ones in Moreno Valley and Tyler now. :(

As someone who loves Mickey Mouse and Disney, I wish the Disney Stores remained. It's a place where you can experience Disney magic, without visiting the parks. I'm glad I visited my local Disney Store in 2020. I bought a Sorcerer Mickey and Christmas Mickey plush there. Just recently, I visited NY's Disney Store. It was so incredible and big. I bought 4 items there.

I LOVED the Oxmoor Mall Disney Store!! It was my favorite mall store, and it was the closest I ever came to experiencing the parks! I can even remember when the Warner Brothers Studio Store was right across from it in the late 90s - Oxmoor Mall was a great place to go if you loved animated films!
I also loved Plush Mountain (sometimes I call it "Mount Plushmore" too!). In fact, I think that the very first time I was brought to the Oxmoor Mall Disney Store when I was very young, I was utterly enthralled by Plush Mountain, and I stood there gazing at it, slipped off my shoes, climbed in and snuggled in with all the plushies - until I was yanked back out again at the urging of a distraught cast member! At 2 or 3 years old, it didn't occur to me that I could not do with a store display of plush what I did all the time with my stuffed animals at home😅
My favorite Disney Store items were definitely the plushies, especially the mini bean bags! I still have a bunch of them - my favorite childhood bean bag plushies were/are Flower the skunk, Dumbo, and Piglet from Winnie the Pooh. I loved Disney Tsum Tsums, too, when those were released years later!
And, I can totally believe that the 429 store cast members were like a family to one another - I remember them being some of the nicest people working at Oxmoor. I'm glad to hear that they got to have so much fun together, with all the different exclusive events. In the 2010s, I even sort-of became friends with the assistant manager (at least, I *think* that was his role)...he was always the first one to greet customers and offer assistance, always had a smile on his face, and when I felt self-conscious about browsing/buying plushies as a young adult, he would smile at me encouragingly and say, "I see you found some new friends!" In another Disney Store-related RUclips video, someone revealed that Disney Store cast members are told something like, "each guest deserves at least 30 - 40 seconds of magic" (can't remember the exact amount of time), and well, the assistant manager at the Oxmoor Disney Store offered that, and more.💖 I hope he's been doing okay since the store closed in late 2020, given that the closure occurred on such short notice (I'd been afraid of that).
Anyway, this is a terrific video - thank you so much for the nostalgia trip! 😃

This was my hometown location too - it just pains me to see a store so staunch in its aesthetic ways be steamrolled by the minimalist wave. It breaks my heart - now everything feels bland

Damn. My local Disney stores went through those same and similar fates. We had several Disney stories in the Cincinnati area (where I live) including Northgate, Springdale, and Kenwood. The one that I remember going to quite often before it closed was the one in Springdale. It was in Tri-County Mall, and my parents would take me to that store, which I bought some plushies from there, including figurines.
The one in Tri-County Mall was the one that I remember going to that introduced me to the world of Disney. I was told that the ones at both Tri-County Mall and Northgate Mall opened in the 90s, but in different years. Unfortunately, they both closed in 2008. The one in Northgate closed in January of that year, and became a dance studio years later (which is still open today). The one in Tri-County closed in July of that year, which was devastating because the mall was doing fine before it went downhill, and it became a jewelry store called Glitter, which closed and the mall is now closed for good, unfortunately.
The one in Kenwood had its interesting relationship with Disney. The original Disney Store at Kenwood Towne Center opened back in 1991, but I’m not sure when it closed. However, they opened a new location in that mall in 2011 until they closed in 2021, and I went to that store, a lot. I bought several kinds of merchandise there, not just plushies.
The only Disney store that’s currently open in my area is the one in Monroe, but it’s called Disney Outlet, and that opened in 2009 along with the rest of Cincinnati Premium Outlets, if I recall.

7:28. They were definitely not limited to Pink & Green. The later Piperail design had statues extensively, though I agree with it rivaling Plush Mountain. Heck the characters are what I miss most, and for whatever reason I didn’t have a Pink & Green, so my stores were straight to Piperail.
As for the front display, I saw other videos of different characters moving like Donald in a rocking chair. And at one point both had animatronics, at least in some cases.
