Exchanging Mozart for Mario Brothers | Rob Landes | TEDxSaltLakeCity

  • After unsuccessfully auditioning for four orchestras, classically trained violinist Rob Landes started to lose hope in his dream of a musical career. A loop pedal and a community of supportive video gamers changed everything. In a paradigm-shifting TEDxSaltLakeCity performance, Landes demonstrates that dreams can come true with a little tweaking, that listening to your mother always pays off, and that classical musicians also know how to rock. Featuring covers of “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen and “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC. Take a classically-trained violinist who began studying at the age of 3, add two music performance degrees, include a loop pedal and a dash of humor, and you have Rob Landes. Rob Landes has become a sensation on both RUclips and Bilibili (China’s
    most popular short-video platform) for his combination of video game music, pop music, comedy, and costumes. With over 1.6 Million subscribers worldwide and 160 million views online, Rob has delighted diverse audiences with hundreds of musical covers. As to his live performances, Rob Landes has opened for T-Pain, Rachel Platten, and Jason DeRulo, while also having performed at New York Fashion Week, Carnegie Hall, the Sundance Film Festival, throughout Europe, Northern Africa, Southeast Asia, and now TEDxSaltLakeCity! This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

      It’s funny how he mentions losing at auditions for professional orchestras. Rice University has a low output of musicians who win jobs. Let alone maintain those jobs with orchestras around the nation. I’m sure there are plenty of them who win jobs with 52wk orchestras, but that’s a slim chance than none. But most of them just return to their hometowns in hopes of becoming the next big thing, but yet, no one wants them when they comeback unless you can absolutely knock it out the ballpark. Unfortunately, he had to turn to this to where it’s still a failure.

    • @laceandribbonsviolin
      @laceandribbonsviolin 3 года назад +2

      Wow that must have been difficult! Once u figure out the intervals of the strings of your own instrument, it can be hard to play those same pieces on an instrument with different string intervals. I play cello too and you just play it down a string and change one of the fingerings but it’s almost the same. Viola is even easier because you only go down a string and don’t have to change fingerings except shifting up on the A string. But I still haven’t gotten the hang of guitar. Nice work👍🏻🤗

    TwoSet and Rob both started their RUclips carees by making violin covers. TwoSet evolved into a relatable classical comedy channel while Rob combined the violin with video games and anime. Anyway, what I’m trying to say is We. Need. A. Collab. Rob should def try the Ling Ling workout and TwoSet should cover more anime openings and video game themes🙌

    in classical community, Rob Landes is probably (or maybe definitely) an example of what we call "sacrilegious". I didn't know that he was struggling in classical world, I mean, we all know that it is a very difficult industry (kinda an understatement to say that it is difficult). He was being humble, vulnerable and courageous to try out different path of career while still playing violin.
    I hated myself when I watched his Despacito video and sort of looking down at him cause I thought he wasn't good enough due to the fact that he could only cover some pop songs (and I was still in grade 3 in violin). To that, I am sorry that I judged him without knowing his side of the story. We all struggle in so many different ways and I am glad that he have found something that works for him while he still able to play his instrument and entertain many people.

  • @loreermejo

    This guy is great. I wonder why nobody ever talks about how elitist the world of classical music is sometimes. I remember a friend of mine struggling to convince his co-students to play music from Pokémon Yellow he had rearranged, basically telling him it was not adequate for them. Music is so much more than big names and history, yet we let those awful people think they're in charge of telling others what is good and what is not.

    Rob landes is my hero! He was the reason I started to play violin the way I do now. I started playing at 6, and when I was 10, I found out about rob landes and his meme music. So back then I thought that violins were for classical and classical only. When I saw his coffin dance video, I realized I could do more than classical. Now I’m 12, and the meme playing goddess of my school. :)
