- You may wonder how a beatboxer and an orchestra can work together?
Acclaimed beatboxer Tom Thum and classical powerhouse Gordon Hamilton show you exactly how, as they showcase their world renowned concerto for beatbox and orchestra, Thum Prints.
Together with The Bombay Chamber Orchestra, they deliver a never before seen sneak peak into this globe trotting symphonic project. At first glance, you’d struggle to find a greater example of artistic polar opposites, yet anyone lucky enough to have witnessed this creative alliance would agree that the two compliment each other perfectly.
Executing performances with some of the worlds most renowned orchestras, such as the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic, Cologne’s WDR Funkhausorchester, Florida’s Imperial Symphony Orchestra, Nürnberg Symphoniker, and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra to name a few, the pair have been turning concert halls on their heads and continuing to wow audiences with this remarkable collaboration.
Simply titled, ‘Thum Prints’ this boundary pushing symphony comprises mainly of original compositions, wholly written by Tom and Gordon. Bridged by comedic interludes, it has the ability to be programmed as a full 60 minute show, or as a 20 minute concerto in a longer symphonic program. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Coming from a music teacher, what distinguishes Tom from so many other talented beatboxers is his clear understanding of musical fundamentals, music history and styles. In performance, he demonstrates a clear grasp of all of the technical elements - pitch, timbre, rhythm, etc. Combining all of that with his desire for story-telling, he produces some truly virtuosic sonic masterpieces. I have shared his original TedX video with many of my elementary music students over the years and it always makes an impact. Often those students come to tell me later how his video was one of their true inspirations to pursue music. I’ll be sharing this one, too. Thank You, Tom Thum! Keep doing what you clearly love doing!
Blah blah blah I coming from king of United States of France.
U dont know nothing about music.

Oh, definitely!!! Very well said. I teach Music at an Elementary School, too, and pretty much ALL of my students, K-5 absolutely love to try to beatbox on their own mic AND the 2013 Tom Thum TedX is also there favorite video period.... I also have an a Cappella group instead of a show choir, so my students are beatboxing aficionados. ☺️
If you like Tom Thum, you should check out MB14. He also has an established knowledge of music theory
@@dartheory4423 Thanks for the recommendation. He's quite the singer, too! I think I can begin to build a whole unit on beatboxing for my students. They'll love it!
Isn’t it amazing how musical instruments can imitate his beatbox?
Yes! 😊
yuh
that one dude in the orchestra was enjoying this alot too xD
He was so pleased to be there, I loved that
Yup, that dude right in front was me, and you're absolutely right! I had the time of my life :-D
@@AnishSharma-ro8xy hey! I would too!
9:49 - that moment is fantastic
all of it is
This is when I made the Stank face bc it was THAT good!
It's originally from his show on beatbox battle years ago
It was like climax of movie
Gordon’s gesture to to kick off the drop wasn’t just conducting his orchestra. Turns out over many viewings, he also has control over goosebumps.
I legit couldn't differentiate between Tom's trumpet and the Real one.
Crazy innit?
Get out more then,
It was so small I had to see it, otherwise I didn’t even notice it wasn’t him until later
@@einfjordbreen4239 Okay, we've been out, what next? Tom has incredible skill, why are you trying to diminish that? You act like getting out will let people see what a trumpet sounds like, yet in this video we heard them right next to each other and couldn't tell the difference.
What is your goal? Putting people down or just been a mean person in general?
@@einfjordbreen4239 ignoramus
This is a criminally underrated performance...
Whatt.....???
Such a performance without any single sound of the crowd???
I cant even close my mouth during the show...
What an amazing artist...!
@Bamidélé you couldn't have put it better than this.
It’s common sense to be as silent as possible in an orchestra. You could confuse their sense of rhythm, their notes, and their attention. A single musician out of sync could have a domino effect on the entire performance. The reason why an orchestra is deemed as the most sophisticated form of performance is because of how hard is it to make 10+ people with different backgrounds in music and style to make the sound that the conductor wants. While an orchestra is usually played by classical musicians, it doesn’t hinder beatboxers and EDM artists to join them as they’re just a different form of musician that abides by the same musical rules
While it makes sense to shout at a beatboxing or a normal concert, in a orchestra and classical music performance, you would be deemed as uneducated. That’s not to say concerts where people shout are full of uneducated people, it’s just a different environment with different etiquettes.
All of his other videos where he's by gimself are similarly quiet. I think he just catches and keeps attention so well that people are shocked
it is an Orchestra it is a proper etiquette to be silent
At TEDx it's practically impossible to get the audience involved, I've seen him doing orchestra where the audience goes wild.
TomThum, the best beatboxer in the world...😍
In the Milky Way
Go check out Swissbeabox, you will find so many more amazing beatboxers
Yeah i think so too, he is so diverse
Best or at least one of the be
Tom is a great looper but beatboxing I wouldn't say he is the best. Better arguments would be Alexinho, D-low, Codfish, Zer0, Napom and I can keep going. But I agree that Tom is good if not one of the best at looping.
the lack of promotion of Tom's post-TEDxSydney contents is killing me.
He's admitted that he struggles retaining an online presence. He does a lot of work outside the internet and then pops up every once and a while with something like this.
Like comparing that original TEDx to this, it's like two completely different people. He definitely deserves promotion but I think he just enjoys the actual physical work he does and traveling to spread what he does.
Wasn't his first Ted Talk like the most viewed out of all other Ted videos?
Still is
Still is boy! Tom Thum the GOAT!
Yeah!
I don't know how I've only just now stumbled upon this, but it feels like I just walked into a magical land full of adventures
How is there only 242k views?!! This needs to be 24.2million views! Such talent needs to be seen all over. Time to share!
that static disc sound is very underrated. loved tom singing as a woman
You do a Siren with some saliva on your teeth mate. Real doozey.
Wasn't expecting Ratchet Face.
It was a more than pleasant surprise.
that was sick
Beatboxing was so popular that they made instruments after it, thank you Tom Thum!
Evolution:
1. Big Bang
2. Amibas

What's the dinosaurs and humans on your list
Who's Superhumans I meant to say superheroes
You're not supposed to say Superhumans
What is Tom thumb
I meant to say Tom Thum
Put Tom Thum in a movie!!! Ratings will explode everywhere. 🥰🤩
Tom in my opinion is undeniably a beatbox legend. I love how he incorporated ratchet face into this ensemble
Ratchet face is infuckingsane
Tom 'The Voice of The Universe' Thum!
LIKE. could you IMAGINE?! A whole MOVIE with this? Forget just an album. I want a wholeass new GENRE to listen to!!! This is literally so awesome and exciting to listen to. I had tiny tears of joy during the last couple minutes of this.
Symphonic beatbox. It was a fantastic experience. Thank you Tom.
Straightforward, chills at 9:51
This particular track of Tom helped me go through some of the toughest times of my life in 2019. I can't explain how grateful I am that the two legends came together to gift us a 2020 remake. God bless Tom.
What's the blessing gonna do? Just curious.
@@saneperson3776 its like luck but luck technically just is a synonym to blessing because if god blesses you your going to have good luck so its like a religious good luck
tbh it sounds like the moment in a action movie when they're preparing for a massive war
Tom Thum is not the best beat boxer... He is a living legend... ❤❤❤ love from India 🇮🇳
tom thum artwork is a world class masterpiece
As an Indian, this makes me very happy. Tom is the best beatboxer no doubt!
He was born with an incredible ear 👂 and the ability to recreate sounds he hears .....
Born? I mean sure, he is genetically gifted, perhaps, but his talent is the result of thousands of hours of practice
Tom is gifted in the way of the voice. His Thum is legendary.
I really like Tom because he actually creates a performance. So many other beat boxers never leave the technical aspest of it. You are awesome Tom!
Why so low views on this? This is amazing
Beatboxers assemble!
Brand loyalty I love this man
Every Ted x with Tom is so amazing, he is truly a legend
Tom thums ratchet face + orchestra = next level genius. Jaw dropping performance
Absolutely amazing! I would loooove to go to a full concert like this
This is undescribable, I have never seen something like that before
Tom takes beatboxing to a whole different level. Really amazing!
Isn't it a performance that makes you question what music is? I love it.
Tom is brilliant and one of a kind. It's fusion of so many thing's.
With all the smiles on everyone's faces, especially the composer. you know everyone is having soo much fun and that is what it is all about
08:30 opening of rachet face. Always amazing!!
Love from India we love your performance
Every bit of song is so beautiful
Thank you for performing in India
I don't know what happened to the audience but I think they are petrified by the beauty of the beats
Just common etiquette in an orchestra hall. You're not supposed to make noise, just to avoid disturbing the orchestra. It's very difficult to have so many different musicians of different music backgrounds and skills working together, so it's very easy to distract them out of rythm, which would be a disaster.
To be fair, wouldn't you be petrified if you had heard that?
One of the greatest beatboxers to ever exist. ⭐
Such a mesmerizing show. Tom has talent unlike any other beatboxer I’ve seen.
This was fabulous! Thum is constantly improving and adding to his performance, it's just a pleasure to see his evolution.
Every 2.5 mins a wave of goosebumps.
Better than any Grammy intro ever. Real, true, raw talent.
Every time that kid playing the violin smiles, I smile - this was delightful😊🥳🎉🥳 Happy New Year 2022!💗
5:02 - 5:28 *_It reminds me of the talent show at the Crusty Krab, when the crowd went wild when SpongeBob was on stage while they were booing Squidward_* 🤣🤣🤣
Tom Thum with another banger ! Let's go man ! Entertain us in ways only you, know how to do it
2:10 ...A masterpiece was Born ! ...Amazing medley
sounds a lot like final fantasy, doesn't it
Ratchet face remix. I'm digging it
As soon as the drum beat kicked, I knew it was "Ratchet Face".
Tom Thum is a unique GENIUS!!!
So many incredible moments, but when he breaks out the female, hypnotizing voice at 10:32 my brain melted into dismay and amazement
This should have a lot more views, honestly
I love this so much. I got to meet Tom last year. I was legit speechless.
Absolutely a pioneer in beatbox and in music in general, shout out the incredible orchestra and kudos to tom, phenomenol
This is the coolest sound ever, ive never really been into orchestra but allitle beats makes it epic
I just happened to watch it and I watched it all without even realizing it
The storytelling through music is soo incredible!
I've never watched a concert or anything like that that costs so much for 1 ticket.. not even a fan or interested in watching concerts... but if Tom Thum comes to Philippines, I won't care where it is or how much it'll cost, I'll be there! Such opportunity to watch a legendary man performing live shouldn't be missed.
This is probably the coolest thing I’ve seen so far
Tom is from a different planet!! Pure Dimond
As a fan of multiple genres of music this was a beautiful and amazing collaboration. I already liked Ratchetface and was excited to hear the twist with the orchestra accompaniment as soon as he started the layering. Outstanding job to everyone.

I absolutely enjoyed this. I would like to see this applied to a classic opera like the magic flute or similar.
I really appreciate Tom Thum. I would love to witness a collaboration with Tom and Bill Bailey - I feel that could be awesome! :P They're both very musical, comedic and very talented.
This was absolutely fantastic! I used to sing in a choir with Gordon Hamilton when we were teenagers, too, which is very strange. Nice to see him being successful. And I'm always a fan of Tom Thum. They were a wonderful combination of sounds.
If only i was there i will give them a standing applause, you know what ?
I'll get on top of the chair
The combination of beatboxing with the very instruments being imitated is absolutely incredible.
Side note: Tom looks like if Bill Skarsgård looked sane.
Other side note: This sounds like it could be the theme for a Disney villain.
Big props to the sound engineer
Bruh! Best Beatbox and Orchestral fusion ever! and the Ratchet Face added right at the end, what an outstanding performance overall. Congrats Tom Thum and his crew! :)
10:42 damnnn, goosebumps
I'm speechless, amazing work Tom and the orquestra as well 👏🤙✌❤😎
Rachet Face - the first time released in 2016. Tom had been in my youth!
10:45 Tom the Loooord!!! 💥
This is a masterpeice.
Your epic songs, bass, and lyrics always end too early mate. You're too good for this world
I'm very happy that how carefully the audience is listening.
I remember when I used to work in one of resort in Bali, Indonesia. Tom Thum and his friends stayed at the resort. Then, one of them told me that he (Tom Thum) was a beatboxer. I was curious about him and found out on RUclips his TedEx video in Brisbane. And today, I couldn’t believe that I found his another masterpiece. This is insane!! Good Job, Tom..
Absolutely outstanding. An orchestra going in sync with a beatboxer ? What a time to live and to be able to witness this beauty
Damn this was breathtakingly amazing
The young man playing in front of the orchestra is the luckiest. Both playing and enjoying
Who's got Goosebumps with me?
Newfound love within the world of music
I'm going to watch it several times so I get every moment!
I want Tom Thum, Two Cellos, and Rob Landers to ROCK IT ALLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!
Man, this can be used for the music tracks for the whole of the next Mission Impossible!!!

TOMTHUM WAS MY MAIN INSPIRATION INTO BEATBOXING….He has been my secrets mentor for years and where I am in the journey of beatboxing today I owe it all to him….😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️ MUCH LOVE FROM NIGERIA 🇳🇬 🎉
🙌 HANDS DOWN AWESOME
🙃
Tom forgot to promote this on his page!!!
The Best Professional Beatbox Artist in the entire world, great job Tom Thum, one of the beatboxer that get me into beatboxing since Ted 2013 !!!
This guy is a monster. I'm little sad because of the crowd that didn't wave too much about his performance. Not sure if they did really understand what they was listening to :)
Tbh I'd be just as hyped as that one violinist.
Cleaner than the last orchestrated version. Didn’t think that was possible.
I don't even know how,why or when this dude develope such a dope talent for beatboxing but my words can't even describe how much effort he put into it but man he sure knows how to entertain an audience with music with his voice. Give this man a standing ovation. Shout-out to Tom Thum y'all
Crazy good great stuff, tom thum is extraordinary amazing excellence
