- How to really sound like a Stormtrooper. The Star Wars Black Series Stormtrooper Helmet looks GREAT but the sound effects were really disappointing to a lot of people. We have found two ways to fix it. The first one is practically free. The second adds a new voice changer which gives a MUCH better sound effect, and is cheap enough to well worth it.
Second we install some new helmet padding which makes the helmet much more comfortable to wear for a long time and makes it stay in place so you can look around without having to hold onto the helmet.

Elite Geek what did you use to stick the paddings inside the helmet?
+Ken Banson the padding I used that is in the description comes with velcro with tape on the back in different shapes so you can fit it where needed depending on your head shape.
+Ken Banson I should also mention the velcro glue backing is very strong once permanently attached. But I was still able to take it off and move it several times as I tried different positions for the foam cushions.

Well you should get one. Its awesome.
Try blowing directly into the mic, when its close up to your lips.... before and after you speak. this will mimic the static you hear when stormtroopers speak.

I know this is a 3 yr video, but as someone who builds stuff and knows sound I have another mod for the voice.
If you isolate the sound of your voice with a small hyperbolic mic, you would only hear what came through the voice changer.
Maybe use a small tupperware with a mic at the bottom. Place it inside the helmet right in front of you mouth. The sound of your regular voice will be muffled, and you should also get an added tube like reverb effect.

I just took a trip to Batuu at Star Wars Galaxies Edge in Disney Hollywood Studios. I wore this same hoodie and it was still good enough the Stormtroopers pulled me aside and told me to report for assignment.

I tried your suggestions and they worked great. I was able to get a thick piece of rectangular Styrofoam just larger than the microphone and cut a channel down the middle so the microphone could sit there. It holds it up in the position like you did with the Styrofoam peanut. I also had 2 extra foam pads in the kit I bought which I stuck on the back on the inside of the helmet which gave a little more reinforcement. Thanks again for the suggestion. I enjoy my new Stormtrooper helmet even more :)

So how do they do it at Disney? No one ever asks how the staff helmets work in the park!!?!!?
They probably use the same gear as the 501st. But it is 100s of dollars just for the parts.
Pre recorded voice lines
The stormtroopers that walk around Disney use pre-recorded lines. They gave accelerometers in each of their fingers and their palms of their hands. Hand movements trigger voice lines. If you watch videos of them and look at their hands, it is very obvious when you look for it

I'll take your advice on the voice changer and the padding, because I can completely understand the complaints. The microphone is useless, and the straps do nothing. My all the weight lands on my forehead and nose which makes it uncomfortable after only a minute. Totally sucks. Either way, I decided to start customizing mine which means ill probably take out all the electronics, paint the inside black, maybe change the lenses, add fans FOR SURE, padding, etc. I want a sweet helmet so I can rent out a tux and go out with a tux and the helmet to a comic con or something of the sort.
Don't know if anyone else did this, but I personally just removed the nose piece outright and used the foam padding like you did.
I just got the imperial flametrooper and this video helps a lot! I feel dumb for not adjusting the microphone now. I might install a chin strap to keep it on my head for better visibility though
Alright, in case anyone is still wondering how to disassemble the Black Series Stormtrooper helmet, I might be able to help you.
Please note, I will not be responsible for any damaged helmets; these are the steps I took to disassemble my Black Series Stormtrooper bucket and I was successful and got to modify. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.
If you do decide to continue, remember, be patient; be gentle; don't rush; I prefer to use an old card because it's flimsy and it's plastic, anything metallic and very thin is likely to cut and break the helmet; please read every step carefully before proceeding; evaluate this course of action; be sure you want to do this.
Ok, let's get started:
1) You'll need an old credit/ debit card
2) Start with the top piece of the helmet
3) There are 4 plastic grips on the rounded diagonal corners (above both eyes and under both rear vents)
4) Start by using the card to push inward on the visible separation seam under one of the 2 rear vent grips first, proceed to the next grip until both back grips are both unlocked, move onto pushing inward on the front 2 grips above the rubber trim above the eyes one at a time (continue to lift gently after every grip is unlocked)
5) Ok, this is where the card is really handy, on the outside of the sides of the helmet (ears on down) you will notice an S shaped slit separation seam
6) Insert the card into the arch of the top part of the S slit and push inward and separate slowly; you will hear a snap
7) Do the same to the bottom part of the S slit, gently separating after every unlocked grip
8) Repeat steps 6 and 7 for the opposite side until bucket is fully disassembled

Is there any space inside the helmet to mount the upgraded speaker and coiled-up cord? Maybe stuffed off to the side of the chin?
I bought the voice changer you linked, but it didn’t come with a mounting bracket sadly... Should be ok, I’m sure i can mount it with something else.
Also if you get a little pease of Velcro looping and put it on the mic it will block off some outside noise

Well yea. I have to get in on the fun. And it will inspire me to review the stack of stuff I have ordered I never got around to opening.
I felt the voice changer was not much better in how it sounded, but that could be my speakers. So the the changing of the strap to padding to make it more comfortable over a long period of wearing was nice going. Do you find you have any trouble your vision when wearing it? Some people are saying it is hard to see through when waling around.
The hardest part with the default straps is you can't look down properly. With the foam I don't have that problem. Last Halloween I wore it pretty much the entire day. At work, then walking the kids through the neighborhood. The padding makes a world of difference. I can just toss it over my head and it lines up perfectly every time. and I have full freedom of movement to look around. It makes a bigger difference than I expected.

You can also eliminate some reverb of your voice in the bucket head with soundproofing

I don't mind the sound at all. What I mind is that battery access in the back of the head, which is the main reason you can't use this helmet for trooping with 501th :( But for display this is the best thing ever.

It’s just impossible to please everyone. If they made them big enough to fit everyone they would look funny. If they made them in multiple sizes they would have to cost more. If they made them sound like they do in the 501st they would be $800. For what it is at this price I think they did a great job.

In legends/canon it makes no sense for their armor to be downgraded after the Clone Wars if anything Palpatine wouldn’t be giving his soldiers weaker armor and bad weapons in Legends the excuse of Vader having bad boots and the Stormtroopers having bad armor was budget cuts like its the fucking USSR.I don’t even know what the Disney version is they just diss the armor and the weapons as bad.
An explanation I heard on a RUclips channel was that they downgraded because the storm troopers were more of a police on some planets than an actual fighting force, and you wouldn't have US Marines policing the streets, but a less armed and more friendly looking officer. For the same reason they're not camouflaged at all.

+Super Fry it depends on what they look like. It's not going to be perfect like a motorcycle helmet. It's just pvc. But I wouldn't accept it if it came with big gouges. I can see mine across the room right now. And my kids are pretty hard on them. And they look great.

+Recon Gaming that is the 'own voice' setting on the voice changer right out of the box. It worked really well wearing it for about 4 hours on Monday. And I got a lot of "wow and he sounds like one too" which wouldn't happen with the one built in.

Nope. The older Hasbro Boba Fett voice changer worked better and it's just a toy. I just don't understand why Hasbro uses fancy term "black series" to up-scale the product. For sure they triple the price and it is the same crappy quality like those Hasbro star war helmets 10 years ago. Things certainly have gone backwards.
