Kara, what did you do an a career before Etsy? Did you work in marketing? Your knowledge is amazing and very genuine. I feel you think outside the box and have far more knowledge than these other etsy youtube advisors
Thank you! I had the cake business and did a few things before that. I started in retail out of college by accident, it’s a long story but it taught me a lot about selling things.
I just met someone who works for a woman who has a shop that is actually doing pretty well. We both went to look at the shop and discovered (through some of the tools I use) that none of the listing has any tags! The titles are good and give a thorough description of the what the items are. The shop still makes daily sales!
Tags are optional! It says so in the listings manager. It's better to use them, but once something starts selling that's a larger part of search placement than people think it is.
@@KaraBuntin Just as you said! Was so crazy back in the day when everyone would copy their titles exactly into their tags and even put the title at the start of their description.
I think Etsy has more variables in their algorithm now, so it has more information to calibrate with. Samething with Google. So basically, it is not about short tail or long tail keywords, but more about how much search activity those words get.
Not necessarily, what I'm seeing and what I talk about in this video is that they're still using word order matching, but there are definitely other variables. They're using activity on the specific listing for older listings, and I don't think that "recent activity" is as recent as it used to be.
Just put more keywords that are relevant to the listing in the tags. Don't overthink it, there's no magic formula, describe the listing as well as you can to help the search engine understand it.
Hi Kara.. Not sure if my message reached you yesterday or not..( it was late!) Was just curious about your courses.. really looking for an in-depth shop critique on my Etsy shop . Don't know if you offer that or not. Thanks a lot! Jan
I enjoy learning from your videos. I need help getting an answer to a question and don't know how to find it. Etsy deactivated my listing of a teapot and I can't figure out why. I deleted it and changed the description and it was deactivated again. How do I find out why? There are several other listings of the same teapot in other Etsy shops!
IT could be something with the keywords in it and the Etsy bots are deactivating it without understanding what it really is. Does it have the word "amber" in it by any chance?
@@KaraBuntin Ha, I learned that amber is not a good color description, but when I changed it to honey the listings were activated. I believe the original mistake was the pattern called spice of life. I changed all that by deleting it, but it still was deactivated. No buggy, I'll put it on ebay, but I am confused.
@@KaraBuntin yes. I've given up for now. I'll work on it again down the road. I really appreciate your replies. I still struggle with enough sales, but I keep on it. Your videos have helped. Thanks again.
@@sharenreyes7324 Sounds like you have a Corning Ware teapot; some of those were recalled back in the day due to a faulty handle, and Etsy is deactivating them. If yours is not one of those, perhaps you can convince them that yours is not one of the faulty ones.
I want to say yes, you would do that in the sale manager. I'm not sure if there's a way to choose the entire section but you can choose individual items and put all of the ones in a specific section in the sale.
@@KaraBuntin I wish Etsy would improve how to add items to a sale and to see if items are attached to a sale. You can't see within the Shop Manager if an item is in a sale, and if you look at the sale, I don't think you can search to see if an item has been added (it will only show you if the item has not been added). I end up making a section called "On sale", use the bulk editor to add items I want to offer in the sale to the section. Then when I create the sale, I add the entire section to the sale. But once the sale is over, those items are still categorized in a section called "on sale" so I have to go back and change them to something else that makes sense.
I have an off topic question but kind a better place to post it. Can I ask your thoughts about Pattern? It really appeals to me because of the price and simplicity.I’ve read pros and cons.
If you want a website for the long term i wouldn’t use it because it’s going to be really hard to change to a different platform or Etsy ever decides to close it, or you want to switch to a different platform.
I ship to Canada and the US, but nowhere else because of the VAT taxes and long delivery times. When people have told me that they don't mind waiting, that changes when they actually have to wait, and I don't need the aggravation!
Just had a thought so have a question about tags, when I use "some" of my title in tags I have to break them up, but I have a habbit of using a capital letter at the start of each tag, Would the capital letter stop etsy reading 2 or 3 tags as one search or would it make no difference what so ever?
Hi, I have one question! is changing in listing price affect listing? (for example, if my XYZ listing performing well and I increase the price of that particular listing then will my listing go down in the Etsy algorithm or something happens to my that listing) hope you understand what I want to ask you. Thanks
It won’t affect search placement director, cut it can affect whether people buy it, and if people stop buying it as often then THAT can affect search placement.
Hi! A general question: is the same item allowed in two different stores? Not talking about me having two different stores. Thinking of starting POD and primary design myself, but also use some things from creative Fabrica (of course making it unique). When I surf Etsy I can see the same phone cases sell on many stores. I get confused. Thank anyone för clarification. Don't find anything about it in the Etsy rules.
You can't have the same thing in two stores that you own, but people who sell similar items because they buy the same clipart and make things out of them can do that.
Hi there, I tried to open my Etsy shop on Wednesday (July 6); at the risk of sound daft, I found it a little confusing and struggled with the delivery section. So, I spent quite a few hours uploading images and descriptions, only to be told that my account had been suspended! But, I hadn't even activated it yet! They sent me an email saying that someone would contact me within 7 days. Has this happened to anyone else? And BTW LOL, I'm selling Bib Aprons, not something risky like .... well, something bad! I'm still completely confused.
It happens a lot with new shops, they use bots to check the listings and sometimes it's overzealous. Start emailing them and pester them about it and they'll reopen it without explaining what happened to begin with.
Hi again. Just wanted to say I appreciate you getting back to me so quickly AND they did respond! Now I'm up and running! Trying to get into your FB group!
