Mount it on a low bench with a hole in it. Then put a tub or a crate or something under it for the kindling to fall into.

Wranglerstar I picked one of these up and I cut the base off and took two pieces of round stock 12 inches long and welded it to the frame than welded the base back on the the bottom it definitely improved the tool for me

I'm a kiwi & the story of this was the young lady who designed this wanted her family to be able to split firewood - kids in particular - the original version was rough and ready but worked great. This would be a great gift for family with kids / older people / people with issues with vision. Most NZ firewood / fireplaces are around a foot - note that there is a larger version of this splitter 😎👍 chur

I can’t believe he didn’t cut it! I was about yelling to just get the wood saw and cut it off right above the ring to release the tension on the round.
Regarding the length issue, as you mentioned, you want to mount it to a big round of wood, but you could cut a cylindrical recess into the round that closely matches the diameter of the tool hoop and extend the length capacity and help keep everything tidy so the kindling wouldnt slip out the bottom etc

I temper my blades 2 cycles of two hours at 200 degrees c. A wood fire burns hotter than 200.

After watching this video, I bought one of the smaller ones from Northern Tool. With a coupon code I got it for $85.00. I love it! It works excellent and we split all our kindling in half the time we usually spend with an axe. Great video, great recommendation! I bolted it to a stump and used the right size logs to start with. Learned from your mistakes. I feel so much more comfortable using a hammer than an axe. Nice job!
I've had the same concern as this guy, letting my daughter use an axe lol I've watched my 11 year old cousin miss and put a chip in his shin bone with an axe so I'm reluctant to let someone younger do it

So many people have tried to knock-off the design, through minor tweaks to get around her patent. If you enjoy the tool, support the original girl that designed it, and buy the original quality product.
Came across this thing in a public open fire cooking area in Denmark (yeah, that's a thing there, apparently). Loved it so much, I had my 11 year old daughter gather the wood and split it while I tended the fire. Excellent stuff.

More than 2 million kiwis in Australia. I'm one of them. NZ should be counted as two separate states (Nth Island and South Island) within a wider federation. Both Australia and New Zealand retain their names, just rename the federation itself. Southern Pacific States or Union of Southern States, something like that.
Heck, the Australian constitution has a section written into it to allow for new states to join the federation- renaming the federation would keep both identities happy.

Two changes I would make is making it taller like you mentioned, but also having the top ring be able to open outwards. It looks like it could have split that first log if the ring could be released. This product is remarkably well made and thought out, kudos to her!

We have a wood burner insert in our home. After cutting the back of my hand, luckily no permanent damage, I saw this online and it has been the best thing! It has even sat outside for the last 6 years on a large, knot filled, walnut log. High, high highly recommend the Kindling Cracker!

On the big round you’re mounting on, drill out a big hole in the centre for the long kindling to drop in.

I have one and it has to be mounted to something solid and heavy. You will also have to cut out a portion of the base ring on the sides where the wedges are and drill new mounting holes ior long lieces of wood keep hitting it.

I've been using the larger XL version (17 inch height, 9in diameter) for 6 years. I can handle larger pieces. Works great.
I was given one of these for Christmas. Love it. Much safer for splitting kindling than aiming my axe at a wobbling piece of firewood.

Kindling doesn't have to be just as long as the firewood. I always cut several half-length rounds from logs specifically to split into kindling. It requires noticeably less force to split the shorter pieces. A screw or nail driven through a 1-foot 1x2 makes a very safe way to stabilize the target board for splitting. Put the screw at one end of the board and give it a slight tap with the hatchet. I've heard it called a "chicken stick" but I call it a "safe-split kindling stick." No more nervous fingers. : )

So far, my favorite kindling making method involves a heavy sheaf knife (I use a Ka-Bar), and a gnarly chunk of wood to strike the knife. Aka the baton method. Agreed on using a hatchet- I like my fingers right where they are, thank you! Best part is, one hand holds the knife, the other the baton- both are totally out of the way of any ooopsie!'s.
And if popping becomes a problem, just go until it's mostly there, grab the stick, and twist the knife to break it apart.
I also use this method on green sticks, to help them dry faster. I mostly use limb wood and tops for kindling. Why not, it's already about the right size. And it works great on resiny pieces of spruce or pine for firestarters!
This unit looks like the bee's knees, if you're working with chunks split off larger rounds!
Thick bladed machete and a wooden mallet or another bit of firewood
Irwin makes a utility chisel that's designed to be beat on and only costs about $10. I prefer using that over harder steel knives that can get microfractures from impacts.

I'm sure you've noticed by now the smaller pieces weren't splitting because they were falling between the fins and not being forced apart.
Here's a thing about New Zealand. No-one ever told them they were too small to be important on the world stage. So they just go on being awesome and making excellence. I say this as an Ozzie. So many things from Australia that made us famous are actually Kiwi. Phar Lap the racehorse. Tim Finn from Crowded House/Fleetwood Mac. Russell Crowe. Sam Neill. Taiko Waititi never had to get to Australia for a pay day, because he's totally brilliant. Our trans Tasman rivalry is a thing between us, but we seem to share it pretty well. We rag on their accent like crazy, much the same way as the South Park guys do about Canadians.

Mount that on a table with a hole underneath the hole in the splitter and you can stand and have the split kindling fall in a box below. Looks like a time saver for sure

Here is a shortcut for removing a splinter/sliver. Especially with kids. Have someone hold a pair of binoculars backwards where the eye piece is against the splinter. This will enlarge the splinter around 50-100 times larger and be much easier to see then looking through the big end, you can more safely remove it. So tiny lens to splinter and look through the big lens to magnify it. Have fun!

Just got one of these things yesterday - Canadian Tire version called Kabin. Screwed it to my stump this morning. Tried it out. Works great. Especially like that it can do narrow diameter pieces.
My wife got me one of those for Christmas. I first thought it was kind of silly, but it DOES make a things a lot easier.

Pretty cool invention! You could mount it with the hole open on the bottom. That way spliting smaller and longer kindling will pass through the hole. Just a square frame underneath the spliter. Also elevating it on a short stand. 4x4s or something similar would work.

Hmm, I didn't even realize I need this! (I hate kindling shooting off in all directions, and swinging a hammer towards my fingers is safer than using a hatchet!) Loved watching you wedge that big piece. I kept thinking, that piece is going to expand... where's it going to go?! :) (Not that I wouldn't have done the same thing...)
As a 58 year old grandma I bought myself one. It works SO well I bought this as gifts for others. My grandson loves to split would for me now.

The splitter doesnt need to be taller. Notice the hole in the base of the splitter. That allows the user to cut a hole in the bottom of whatever surface you anchor the splitter to. Then fit it the underside of the anchor with an adjustible receptacle beneath the opening. That way you can cut longer pieces and still have easy access to them to further split them down.

I love splitting wood. I'm 53 years old & I split a cord already. It keeps me in shape & toned. I wouldn't change a thing.
When he said a larger size, I just thought immediately about mounting it on something with a hollow center that you could put a bin under to catch the pieces.
By larger size though, he really just means more distance between the upper ring and the blade. That would allow for splitting longer pieces.

I just bought one and it will arrive in two weeks. I bought it before watching this video, lol. Fortunately it will be the XL version, a bit taller, wider and heavier. Final cost $250 Canadian. I am getting older and this makes everyone rest easier. :-)

If you Bolt it to something with a hole in the middle, it would solve that problem with getting the little guys all the way through
The wood deflects too much to go down hole you need to mount it on a pillar the same size or just slightly larger then the base
I split all my big stuff with a sledge and wedges. I've used my cracker and a 3 lb hammer for smaller stuff for years. I love it. It's easy, fast and safe. In all the years I've used it, I've never had to touch the edge.
