2001 was their last realistic shot at the brass ring
Spurs didn’t get their act together until March, Lakers had a shaky regular season until April, Blazers had toxic chemistry, Kings and Mavs were still unproven

Bruh, I remember Dallas was the laughing stock of the league in the early 90's. They won 9 games in 1993. Even the arrival Mashburn, Kidd and Jim Jackson in the mid 90's couldn't make them a consistent winning team (also had guys like Popeye Jones, Gary Trent Sr. I believe and George McCloud who was a super high volume 3PT shooter a bit ahead of his time).
It was the Dirk, Nash, Finley trio (along with Juwan Howard and Shawn Bradley, and a year or 2 later Raef Lafrentz, one of the early stretch 4/5 guys) that finally made this team a contender. This was the series that put them on the map and they became a contender for the rest of the 2000's, all the way up until they won a title in 2011. This series was like a changing of the guard of sorts between Stockton/Malone and Nash/Nowitzki.
Dirk was my favorite player around this time and I remember bugging my uncle (who lived in Arlington Texas) to get me a Dirk jersey (for whatever reason he didn't like Dirk). I can remember the next season when they got the new uniforms and everything. He got me the dark road Dirk jersey.
    Good times.

Not just the early ‘90s; it was pretty much the entire decade, with a brief reprieve of fool’s gold in 1995. They showed flashes of the future in the lockout season, but it wasn’t until midseason a year later when things really started to gel.

As a lifelong Mavs fan, including the gory days of the 1990s, this series was a big moment. To me, it was one of the last great best-of-five series in the NBA, which culminated with a furious comeback by Dallas: coming from behind 0-2 and coming back from 16 down in the 2nd half of Game 5 in Utah. The hero in the end? The “immortal” Calvin Booth, haha!…I almost forgot. This was the final season in which the Dallas Mavericks played at Reunion Arena.
