    I like big nibs and I cannot lie
    You other writers can't deny
    When a pen shows up with an ebonite feed
    And that metal that you need
    It'll get sprung if you are too rough
    When you notice that feed is stuffed
    With Kon Peki, it just keeps flowing
    Not sure I can keep this going...

    mag600 is definitely the best modern flex on the market. they built that nib from the ground up, designed for flex, and it paid off.

  • @osirisgolad
    @osirisgolad 10 месяцев назад +20

    It was already becoming quite obvious over the past couple of years that Magna Carta was steadily working its way up to the quality standards you'd expect from other established manufacturers, but I was absolutely flabbergasted when I first wrote with the Mag 600. For decades we've been hearing how hard it would be to recreate no-compromises vintage flex nibs, and then these upstarts in India just went ahead and did it instead of talking about it. Impressive to say the least.

      but the price is insane. For that price you buy an original vintage flex penwhich has a gold nib, not steel

    • @osirisgolad
      @osirisgolad 10 месяцев назад +6

      @ The Mag 600's nib is gold, not steel. It's also a larger pen than most vintage pens, you know it works and doesn't need restoration, and the filling system is much less fragile than the average vintage pen's filling system. They both have their place in the market.

    •  10 месяцев назад +1

      @@osirisgolad I didn't see the gold marking in the video.

    • @osirisgolad
      @osirisgolad 10 месяцев назад +1

      @ Not all gold items have gold marks on them , and the marks could also be on the heel of the nib inside the grip section. Magna Carta claims they are 14k nibs in all their marketing materials, so that's what I will assume until someone puts one into an XRF spectrometer to show that they are not in fact 14k gold.

    The word you were looking for, Drew, was "flow". The ebonite feed supplies the mag600 with enough ink flow for its needs, which most so-called flex pens don't get.
    That said, the Fountain Pen Revolution flex and ultraflex (a totally different beast, a 14K ultraflex effortlessly puts down seriously wide lines without railroading) work well, and so do the Pilot Falcon SEF (gives reliable line variation like a good flex nib) and the Custom 743 FA (approaches a steel ultraflex in line width).
    You do need to learn to use a flex (or ultraflex pen), to give it enough pressure to open the nib but not so much that it splays the tines. You need to put good ink in it (iroshizuku tends to work well; I've struck out with Noodlers, Diamine, Herbin, Private Reserve, and Sailor inks; they're either too dry or too thin to keep a steady flow with a flex nib). One of the tricky things about flex pens is switching from flexed to unflexed; you can get too much ink flow at that point leading to blots and splotching.
    The Pilot pens work beautifully once you know how to flex because their ink flow is balanced: enough to keep up with the flex without railroading but not so much that you get blots and splotches. The 743 could use a bit less tipping so that it can write a finer hairline when unflexed, but overall it's a great calligraphy pen.

    Love your Pencast, and love your humor and knowledge Drew. Thanks so much to Goulet Pen Company for all you put into educating us, helping with good purchase decisions, and indulging a love of all things pen, ink, and paper. Some feedback on a new product: I love the idea of the Endless Explorer leather cover, it's exactly the type of product I would buy, but not this version. A pet peeve is that several covers on the market, and now yours, do not actually cover the full edge of the journals inside. Not only does leaving the edges exposed and significantly detract from the appearance, but it causes the paper of the journals to become damaged and then just looks sloppy. Would love for you to consider adding the small amount of material to fully cover and protect the journals inside. Thank you for reading! And thanks again for all you do. 🙏

    the mag600 demo was indeed impressive. I'd say you throw a little too much shade on the pilot FA, it is totally a modern flex pen and I never had flow issues with the size 15 and iroshizuku ink (I own two of these pens). I don't know if you could splay the tines quite that much safely, but it goes uef to probably a medium or broad with ease. A direct comparison would make a cool video. I'm sure both have their share of QC issues.

    Darn, wish I'd waited for you guys to carry the Magna Carta pens! Unfortunately, while the nib flex is amazing in mine, it needed a bit of adjustment and the feed doesn't keep up nearly as well as your example. Still currently the closest thing (as in near-identical) to vintage flex!

    I got the Mag 600 (before Goulet had it) and was very excited based on the videos. Unfortunately it leaked, made blobs and burps and was basically useless, a huge disappointment and a complete waste of $300. I am still waiting for the replacement, hoping for better luck with their quality control. Magna Carta completely ignored my emails, but the retailer at least responded.

      Yes, thanks, and I am a longtime, regular Goulet customer partly for that reason (as I said, Goulet didn't have this pen yet when I got it). In fairness, the other retailer also handled the issue in a similar way, and things began moving faster once I contacted them instead of Magna Carta. MIstakenly, at first I thought it best to contact the manufacturer, since the pen is sold with a generous warranty from them -- but I found the reality is that they don't answer customers directly.

    Thank you for explaining how the opus 88 worked!
    I noticed you mentioned in some pencast that it was not a vacuum filler but I didn't understand how that stopper worked. You made it easy and clear! And now the opus 88 brand is much more appealing to me, as I don't like the vacuum fillers but I love the extra ink capacity for travelling.

      I recently got the Opus 88 Omar demonstrator with a Fine Flex nib, and my only issue is that it is not really "fine" -- it's more like medium to almost broad, without pressure. So I ordered an "Extra Fine Flex" nib unit, which was not expensive and is easily swapped out. It's otherwise a very nice pen, with a good feel, and one of its best features is that it's easy to swap "screw-out" nib units for other Jowo-compatible units.

But, the limited colors are stopping me. Question: Can I mix another manufacturer's ink (in really small quantities) to adjust the ink color and still have the 'non-drying' properties of the Infinity inks? I understand that along with the water and pigment, all inks have other ingredients to achieve their viscosity and drying.

    "I like big nibs and I cannot lie" Ha! Do you prefer the original Sir MIx a Lot version or the Jonathan Coulton version? I''m in UKGB (whatever) Yorkshire! So I will have to track down one of those Magna Carta 600s that looks amazing. Always enjoy your 'casts. Thanks.

    I keep getting targeted ads for some company called Executive Vibe that show off an alleged flex nib that looks like it functions similarly in their videos, but for like $50. I have imagine with such a price gap it cant possibly be good...

    Checking the Pen Plaza the Mag-1000 nib looks like it's bigger than the Namiki Emperor!

      Oh I don't do multiple takes in these videos - I just snip out parts that ended up not being super relevant. - Drew

    Its a shame that the Endless ones aren't actually A5, the cover is pretty close but the books are nowhere near

    That Mag1000 is a pen on a nib.
    And given the size of the pen itself, that's saying something 😂
